The first thing I had to fight was not a Splicer, but the game's settings. It kept forgetting what fullscreen was and needed a bit of fiddling before everything worked properly. After that though, it ran just fine. The last time I played BioShock was around 2007. Back then the graphics were absolutely spectacular. I distinctly remember playing it with the side panel of my PC open and one of those freezer cooling packs hanging off the side of the case. Different times. Naturally, the game shows its age today. The graphics are still perfectly fine and even look genuinely good in some places, but the gunplay, sound design and overall feedback definitely feel dated by today's standards. Mixing guns with plasmids is still a lot of fun though. Back then it felt completely new and it still makes combat more interesting than just shooting everything. The story is still fantastic and I even remembered the big twist before replaying it. The characters are just as memorable as I remembered them. Fully understanding everything that is going on, however, probably requires a few hours of YouTube lore videos. The layout can get confusing at times and I found the map to be almost completely useless. Paying attention usually gets you where you need to go, though. It probably also helped that after almost twenty years I somehow still remembered a surprising number of dead ends and roadblocks. Overall, I really enjoyed revisiting one of my old favorites.
This is probably one of the bests FPS games that I have ever plan. The gameplay is really good and the story of the game is pretty good as well, but I feel like the atmosphere of the game is where it truly shines. 10/10
