Overview

The original design of the never-before seen point and click adventure is being brought to life after 30+ years in the vault - Beyond Shadowgate! This new PC game has been created by the designers of the original 8-bit hit Shadowgate and a leading 8-bit adventure studio!
With a world that is over five times larger than Shadowgate, Beyond Shadowgate captures the same look and feel as the 8-bit console version while including modern design sensibilities. Since the memory and color palette limitations are removed, Beyond Shadowgate is a much longer and vibrant game, with both retro and modern gameplay mechanics that give you the feel of the original! For players accustomed to the NES 8-bit version, the game features XInput controller support. The adventure is also completely playable by mouse and key binds.

Story
35 years have passed since Jair defeated the Warlock Lord in the caverns beneath the living castle, Shadowgate. In that time, the land of Kal Torlin prospered and the events of Shadowgate were forgotten. But once again evil is stirring, scheming to bring the world to ruin.
In the dungeons of Gwynenthell, the capital city of Kal Torlin, a lowly Fenling by the name of Del Thornburrow awaits his fate. No stranger to a jail cell, Del soon frees himself from the dangers of the dungeon, only to begin a journey that will push him to the edge of his limits.
Lead Del as he travels through Gwynenthell, across the Torlin Forest, over the Gatekeeper Mountains, and beyond! Uncover plots to overthrow kingdoms that threaten to plunge the land into darkness! Interact with old friends and new, while protecting Del from the traps, hazards, monsters, and every other peril that may introduce him to the ever-present Grim Reaper.

shadowgate
The game is a very good experience so far and I am enjoying the similarities of the art and layouts. However, I did note it to be a lot more linear with a bit too much hand-holding, along with back and forth fetching items for people, which can get a little tiresome. There are significantly less 'useless' items that used to be fun as they required a lot of guesswork to figuring them out and if they were to be used at all (some resulting in your demise). Though these may take away from it slightly, I feel it is overall a great and quite entertaining modern sucessor to the original.
I loved Shadowgate for the NES and this game finally lives up to it. Its got that classic fantasy nerdery that I love. The pixel art is great. The puzzles are good and not too obtuse except for a few but that's expected of any adventure game. You WILL die a lot but don't worry you won't lose any progress. You'll just get booted back to the previous room.
This is a great sequel, and I was very happy with my purchase. I played Shadowgate and the other ICOM games on the NES many times growing up, and this game is definitely worthy of joining the series.
I’m having a blast playing Beyond Shadowgate! The puzzles are really well-designed and fit perfectly with the classic NES vibe. It captures that nostalgic feel while adding some fresh twists. If you enjoyed the original Shadowgate, this one is definitely worth checking out. Verdict: 7/10 — Great puzzles and a solid tribute to the classic.
If you have any interest in all in the classic MacVenture games on NES (or Shadowgate, or any classic point-and-click games), this love letter to all of those is an absolute must-play. Soundtrack slaps!
It can be a quick game if you are going for a speed run (and there is a cheev for that) but really, I liked to savor it for nostalgia as I used to love playing the original on the NES. I played through once for just the fun of it. I played through a second time to have access to the happier endings because I let the imp die the first time and then I went through a third time to hunt for cheevs. I did that in 19 hours and I loved ever hour of my play. I am not sure a younger player looking for action is going to enjoy it as much but I loved it and recommend it to point and click fiends or fans of the original MacVenture series. Bonus points for having the game include a little travel to the other worlds of that long ago series.
More concerned with being meta than just being good. I get the Icom adventures have always had a silly edge beneath their dark veneers, but BSG 2024 is overkill. The puzzles may be good in their own right, but I don't play games solely for challenge. Particularly, I was under the impression that the detours into the other games were optional, not requirements that stood in lieu of seeing more of Kal Torlin. Sure makes that "5 times the size of the original" boast seem literally half-empty. Shame since the game is so much better for most of the first half when it isn't flying its legacy. A sad thing that my faith in these guys has ended here.
Everything about this is NES ShadowGate game play wise but much bigger. My only complaint is.. it doesn't have that same horror theme the original had. This one is on the lighter side. The music as well doesn't give you that sense of.. urgency? I think you'll still find it enjoyable though if you were a fan of the original.
If you're a fan of the NES originals, this is a must. Fantastic love letter to these type of games, retro look and feel with just enough updates to give it some modernization. Thanks for making this happen to all who contributed!
