The most important feature of the game is saying "Beholgar!" whenever you do anything cool.
I bought this game a while ago, tried to play thru it, but got frusterated because it is a Metroidvania without a map, which is a deal-breaker for me. I played it for less than 1 hour and gave up. So I put it aside for a while but decided to come back to it when I was going thru my backlog of unfinished games. The second time around, I stuck with it and I am glad that I did. Yes, it still doesnt have a map, but the rest of the game is pretty solid. It is a good combat, platforming, Metroidvania (or Castlevania if you will). After beating it on my Steam Deck, I also checked out the sequel: Beholgar 2, which I also very much enjoyed (AND Beholgar 2 has a MAP!!!!!). Do yourself a favour, look past some of this games' shortcomings and stick with this one, it will grow on you and also make you appreciate the improvements that were made for the sequel.
Behol-Bug?!?! - Its a fun game, I'll give it that; cool rich storyline, but much to be desired from it's potential final form! Just to put the ugly of the game on here: There are way too many bugs in the game it feels like it's almost in a beta version still. Do not roll under any platforms that allow you the space to roll under them or you stand up in the platform and lock the game out! Also jumping too high in the screen will make you fall out of bounds and a bunch of weird things happen at that point to where you're also "locked out." This can be an easy fix by adding extra platforms to not allow Beholgar to roll under and to close in the rooms to avoid jumping out of bounds, but still not done. I'll give it a thumbs up because it's still fun, but very annoying to actually get through it without glitching at many points in the game... save often is my best advice!
I LOVED playing this game! Mind you, I played on PC with keyboard (mouse is not used). Yes, I had to change the key mapping, but I only glitched once, and never had any major bugs. The times I got lost were because I didn't know I had to press a specific key to proceed, so check the key mapping! This is a hard but rewarding game. Very straightforward. If you like pre-SotN Castlevanias, give it a try!
Great game, really fun, nice visuals, great soundtrack, with variable levels of jank and a couple of bugs still remain Go be a barbarian and slash some monsters aa
Rough Around the Edges; But Still a Great Experience Right out the gate Beholgar brings some beautiful retro visuals, atmosphere and locations to the player. It also has a handful of “cutscene” art pieces that are top notch (They should have also been viewable in some gallery after you have seen them once). However, it does suffer from occasional bugs and gameplay weirdness (More on this later). Sony DS4 wireless worked without any issues. As for the gameplay, we have a bit of an inverse difficulty curve. It is most difficult early on and gets progressively easier. Enemy variety is good enough; with some occasional trolly placements. The general control and movement can feel a bit unnatural for a while, but eventually you get into a vibe with it. Items once collected are instantly saved which creates a weird dynamic of wanting to jump into pits to fast travel to the last save campfire at times. The economy could be better as the player quickly runs out of anything useful to do with the gold collected with only a handful of meaningful upgrades available at the shop. The inventory is barebones; doesn’t keep track of most of the persistent upgrades and sometimes it malfunctions. When it bugs out it will cause the pause menu to stay up and you’ll have to force exit the game. A similar soft lock can also happen if you roll into small areas trying to explore for secrets. During exploration I ended up taking a lot of deaths due to ambiguous looking spots. These areas look like they should be explorable for some kind of hidden secret but they usually turn out to be nothing. Similarly, some death falls/pits look like secrets but they are just poorly visualized death traps. This leads into another quasi-bug where looking down doesn’t always scroll the screen down to see what is below. Progess sometimes requires backtracking and although the game has a broad macro-overview map for fast travel there is no in-game area maps. As a result, you’ll probably be full clearing zones multiple times to find/remember where one specific feature was. Overall it’s a tight compact package that delivers solid action platforming fun throughout the adventure and is well worth taking a look at.
