In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland. The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource.

One of the best game I've played. The modding community is incredible
This is my favorite "turn my brain off" game that I haven't been able to find a replacement for. Mods make it easier if you don't want the added challenge of scarce resources and just want to build the biggest city you can with 8+ hour save files. I hope one day there's a sequel with more city-managing functions but I do enjoy the simplicity of food, fuel, and quality of life items to provide your people. I will say that the trade building and value of resources sometimes feels uneven as animals cost sooo much to trade, and sometimes purchasing these animals glitches and they don't remain in the pen and disappear on me. Other than those times, this game is such a comfort game I find myself coming back to it a lot :)
Nothing scratches the city builder itch like Banished. There's a reason it inspired just about every city builder that came out since its release 10+ years ago, and there's a reason people still play it today, despite all those similar games that have come out since. If you like sandbox(ish) games, resource management, and watching a city grow, Banished will quickly become your go-to comfort game. If you're looking for something with clearly defined progression (technology trees, policies, concrete goals, etc), you will, tbh, probably hate it. Banished is very open ended; the only limits placed on expansion are the resources you have at any given time. This is something a lot of people love about the game, I could also see it being a drawback for some. You'll need mods to keep things interesting long term, but there's a great community around Banished with plenty to offer. One of my all time favorites (check the playtime), highly recommend.
Farmers would rather move rocks than harvest their fields. Fisheries don't tell you harvest limits for overlapping water, nor does the game warn you about any of the very critical things that can kill your village overnight. Farms can be so big the farmer never gets to harvest before it dies, builders don't prioritize building their homes over a dirt road a million miles away. Wish I could love this game, but it just isn't it. I would recommend Rimworld as an alternative if they didn't charge 120+ dollars for DLC's that add less content that the mods they try to replace.
There's plenty to complain about, (for example, the inevitable late game population hysteresis) but at least some part of this game has been baked into the DNA of almost every city-builder that has proceeded after it for good reason. One of the greatest examples of the mid 2010's era of pc games.
Strong 8 out of 10 Fun and challenging city builder sim, with nice graphic design, and animations. People live, work, and have families, while you manage their tasks to help them build a thriving village, and then town, and then city. The soundtrack is minimal, so I play medieval music from youtube as my background music. Overall, a very good game. Pro tip: Food is the most important thing when you first start a game, so build a dock for fishing with at least 4 fishermen, and at least 2 crop fields and 2 farmers. Then build a second storage barn near the dock. After that, it's up to you how you want to build.
