In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland. The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource.

Being a fan of the genre I didn't watch reviews and bought the game for the score. It's a respectable idea made for a specific kind of players that look at the age of the citizens inside each home to underestand if it is the time to build new home to trick the system into populate new home with couples in order to make babies. Bad timing means single people inside the homes = no babies = the city dies. This is the core of the game, since there's no skill tree or ingame mission. It plays well the first hours but I'm not OCD enough to play more than 10 hours without questioning my life choices.
Well its a pretty good game, with some serious flaws, over 300-500 population game starts to lag BAAADLY, and its not my pc, or my laptop, its this game engine, support for only 1core/thread kills it.. Its so stupid, it has awesome mods too, but no, it just cannot keep up. Just buy Setlement survival instead, has everything this game has, + wont need mods to get prettymuch every building this game has with all mods, and wont lag even on 1500population, and going strong.
I want to give a neutral rating, but that's not an option unfortunately. The overall mechanics of the game is easy. But there is no tutorial, so you will have to learn them yourself. I like the art and the overall gameplay, i really think it has the potential to be the best in its category if some aspects will be improved. Because overall, the game feels limited? I don't know what's the best way to describe it. It just feels lacking. Few buildings, few activities for your citizens to do. There's not much options for decorating your village too, or clothes or crafting stuffs or upgrades or anything. So when you reach a certain point of the game, it feels boring and repetitive. Also, there are many things that I don't like about it. I don't know if I'm just unlucky to have experienced so many bugs? Or were they really meant to happen? But either way, it was so frustrating. It felt like the game was really messing with me since these happened in different gameplays -_- 1. My town is doing great. Okay here's some random deaths for you. My fishermen died from drowning. Yup they died from drowning. And then the kids died with no given reason. Bruh. 2. One time, I had all of my fishports filled with citizens at max, but the fishes i get were very few. I reduced them to 2 persons each, and turned the others into gatherers and I was getting 2k fishes? What? 3. They keep on stopping the construction at 99%. Are you kidding me, I'm gonna cry ><, they get something to eat, then visit the herbalist, then get other resources that's not related to the construction, then put the resources to the barn, then it prompts the citizen is working then the citizen is idling??? Like??? Are you dead ass right now, specially at 99%? 7. Also, it would have been nice if the citizens can just do their jobs without unnecessary interruptions. For example, i would see them gather woods, then put the woods to the stock pile, then pause, then pick it up again and put it to the construction site that needs it, which is literally next to the stock pile. Can't they just put it directly? Good Lord. The first time I noticed it, I laughed. I thought it was funny. But then it keeps on happening and it's just so frustrating to watch. -_- Worse case is when they pick up a different resource from the stock pile instead, and start doing another activity which is far far away. -_- sir please finish this one first where are going?? 8. Like I said, i don't know if it's a bug but even when I cancel the other resource gathering activity so that they will be focused in doing one thing, the job still don't get done? They just keep on walking around everywhere. And then my firewood ran out and so many died, and I have like 4 citizens left. Aaaaaaaaaa. Other things I observed... The roads I'm allowed to build are so rigid and limited, and yet I see my gatherers, just chillin' walking up the hills. Hahaha! I feel like they are trolling me. I think, if the citizens were designed to be able to walk in there, i think the roads (atleast the basic one) should be allowed to be built there too. Obviously, it's just an opinion. Also, i don't think the seasons of the game are accurate to the citizens life? because it's already sunny and some houses still have freezing icons. It would have been better if they freeze and die in winter, instead of stretching to summer and then they die because of freezing lol. It's just feels wrong. For the money I paid, i think it was worth it. But yeah, I got a frustrating experience out of it so I'm gonna give a negative rating. You can just try it yourself and see what your own experience will be. It's on sale anyway. Review edit 26/03/26: So I was today years old when I learned that there are mods that can be used, and I think many of them seem helpful. So I will try playing this game again.

For what its trying to be, this game is honestly pretty good... but its missing something. The growth is cool and the management of your laborers is pretty fun, but it gets boring once youve been established. youll spend a lot of time seeing the town function naturally. The endgame is just flat boring. The fun part lies in the very beginning, and making sure your people dont instantly starve. I recommend more tragedies and ways to break the town once you have 200+ people. In the state its in, pretty meh.
