Things I do like: - The intro is quite nice and sets the scene for the game nicely. - That Dark Souls vibe. - Not just human enemies, slimy mobs and undead too. - The dev gets releases out super fast and listens to all the feedback. Things I don't like: - A fair amount of bugs here and there, kind of feels like it should be in alpha as the community are practically playtesting the game. - Loot system is totally random throughout the whole game. Edit: 01/05/2020 - Changed my review to positive because the dev addressed all of my major concerns in less than a week.
It's fine. Feels like Oblivion, though the inspiration seems to have Dark Souls at its core. The controls aren't too intuitive but not so outlandish to complain about. I find the visual style to be a little bland, like a photo taken with automatic mode on in a room lit by yellow lights. I think the game would look a lot better if the contrast between light and dark were stronger
It's basically a souls-like with Diablo seasoning. It has a endearing indie vibe with just the right amount of jank.
Back to ashes is clearly a souls-like, and specifically a Demon-souls-like, and the only question left to ask, is it any good? Yes, it is good, the combat is fun and challenging, the world is dark and nighmarish, and the maps are webs of potential exploration. it also adds random loot drops ala Diablo.
Cant recommend the game right now : The combat feel unresponsive and unbalanced, half of your hit passe through ennemies model without connecting and stamina cost for every thing is absurd making you wait for it to regen after every action. To bad because every thing other than combat like the lore, the skill tree or the loot system feel incredible.
The game gave me everything I wanted and it was cheap to buy. I would like to donate because I want to see the game succeed. The game has 4 forms of progression: 1. Gear: Items you find have differing quality, affixes, and sockets. The developer was inspired by Diablo 2 and it shows a lot. 2. Leveling up: With each level you gain a point you can spend on the trait tree. 3. Player Skill: Learning to play the game is far more beneficial in this game than in other games. Perhaps this is a sign of a proper soulslike experience. 4. Knowledge: There was much I learned while playing the game. Mechanics that are not fully explained but might be in the future. Learning these mechanics can change the games difficulty drastically. Most souls players know to use controllers when playing souls games, however for this game I recommend you immediately forget that concept. Play with a mouse and keyboard or you are going to have a bad time. The developer has a couple videos on youtube showing demos of areas not yet in the game. I look forward to eventually exploring those areas. I love the area designs and the maps are quite large. I wish there were more enemies, there is enough enemy variety but not enough enemies in a per map basis. The game has received a bit of polish smoothing out bugs and I gave some feedback in the form of suggestions, the developer is actively working to improve the game.
This game is a mix of diablo and dark souls, and is very well executed, but there are some idiotic choices the devs made that drag down the game. I'm six hours in, I am very firm on my skill tree at this point, but the game refuses to give me a two-handed weapon. I am supposed to make a choice of my future build, without even trying how that build plays like? No heavy armor either, everyone is a a rouge apparently , even if you make a strength build with a slower weapon. Strength builds are definitely have a disadvantage in early game, and I lost motivation to push through. I can forgive the janky hitboxes and other technical issues, because it is a pretty good game otherwise. But this game forces you to make build choices without having any idea of the gameplay these choices will entail. This game is also very unfair, enemies recover quickly, put up their shields in an instant, while our character's reaction time is very slow in pretty much everything, meanwhile the enemies just keep chopping away. The level design is great and very well thought out, but the boring repetitive look of everything just made me want to push through and finish the dungeons as quickly as I can, not ever want to come back again. The gameplay is pretty addictive, but the aforementioned problems ruined it for me.
Yep. Feels and plays like Dark Souls. Remember what you are getting here when supporting the game and devs. You WILL get a PC only game(No consoles, sir) that is worth playing even if it is a little rough around the edges. For this price, I would not bother and just buy the game. Just my two cents on this one.
As it stands I can't recommend this game at the moment. Combat is very unresponsive and sticky which for a game being inspired by Dark Souls makes for a very unenjoyable experience. Perhaps if the combat is fixed down the line I can recommend it as everything else is pretty good. But with combat being what it is at the moment and being an integral part of the game it does not make for a fun time.
First i normally don't do reviews but this is a game i,ll definitely do. This was one of the better games I've played in a while. Congratulations to the dev! The things i liked in the game are : 1. the atmosphere and look of the game. 2. the characters are interesting and a decent variety. 3. The challenging boss fights that were not to easy or so hard you cant finish. 4. Story was ok it help ramp up the action. 5. Was challenging to get around with no map. 6.Decent amount of weapons and traits. 7. the fact that if someone was stuck on boss could keep game going was big plus. The cons: 1. no map at times was frustrating yet challenging. 2. no guide on mystic fountain / runes. 3. small flaws of contact not registering on hit boxes. Loved the game !!! Hope there is another in the future. better than some aaa games . Thanks for the fun!
