crap game, avoid. unfun, uninspiring, enemies WAY TOO TANKY. too much backtracking cos every 2nd ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ path needs an upgrade you don't have, any time you backtrack enemies from the previous room respawn in full. this game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, avoid, tries to be a cool retro shooter but the gameplay is super slow because you need to whittle down basic enemies from afar if you want to make any progress and can literally never run and gun because your weapons do ♥♥♥♥ all damage. real ♥♥♥♥ game.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 24 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 9 places towards #1, and the 2,404 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Very good love letter to Metroid with great weapons, a twisted plot and some great HR Giger aesthetics.
Hands down one of my favorite metroidvanias, and I have played a lot. Great music, great visuals, great gameplay, and best of all, a ton of secrets.
AXIOM VERGE
* does not factor into average score

[th]Story[/th] [th]Gameplay[/th] [th]Artstyle[/th] [th]Soundtrack[/th]

[th]5[/th] [th]6[/th] [th]5[/th] [th]8[/th]

[th]Sound Design[/th] [th]Difficulty*[/th] [th]Replayability[/th] [th]Achievement Variety/Difficulty*[/th]

[th]7[/th] [th]6[/th] [th]3[/th] [th]4 / 6[/th]

[th]Average Score[/th] [th]Personal Score[/th]

[th]5.43[/th] [th]5[/th]

Axiom Verge has made me finally realise that Metroidvanias are really not my type of game. Before reading any further in this review, this paragraph is by far the most important. If you already like Metroidvanias or they're one of your favourite genres, Axiom Verge is a good game you will enjoy. Do not let this review make you think this is a bad game. As I have now realised my dislike of Metroidvanias has made me stick to the worst qualities of this game, I can only give my personal experience as someone who now knows - this kind of game is just not fun for me. I wouldn't say there is anything particularly unique about this game. It's solidly built, with really good soundtrack and sound design, solid platforming and satisfying gunplay. At the end of the day if that's all you're looking for go play this because the rest of the review is just going to reflect on the frustrations and nuances I had while playing. The main attraction of this game is the whole "glitching" the enemy aspect. While a unique concept when read about, what this really means gameplay wise is after about 30 minutes you'll get an equipment that lets you change an enemies properities. It can be used at the same time as your main weapon and requires no ammo. In some cases it leads to some interesting concepts; some enemies will turn into harmless platforms you can jump on, some will spit out health instead of bullets, some will become larger so they have a bigger hurtbox. These instances unfortunately are few and far between, as 90% of the time all glitching the enemy does is just make them move slower and if they shoot bullets then they'll shoot slower too. Boss design is horrendous. They go from basically inconsequencial to having to shoot a specific hard to reach weakpoint at a specific time. For example there's a large wasp boss who can only be shot in the mouth and only when it's open (which is when doing 1 of 3 attacks). Because the boss is flying and guns can only be shot in the standard 8 directions, the entire fight is just jumping up and spamming shoot hoping that some bullets reach the mouth. Bosses also only have 2 - 3 attacks, turning most bosses into a repetitive slog. The map design is fine. There is no fast travel and some of the collectibles are in some of the most obnoxious locations. This is VERY much a "hug the wall and spam shoot/dash/drill" as there is no percentage counter for areas nor any hints for alot of collectibles, save for a couple of discoloured blocks. The game also boasts having alot of weapons (which it does) but unfortunately not only are 75% of weapons not acciessible until the final 20% of the game, they're also all generally worse than the starter weapon and not worth using except for a few specific scenarios. The worst issue with this game is when you get the dash ability. Instead of being assigned to a button, dashing requires you to double tap in the direction you want to dash. If you're playing on a controller you can probably guess how annoying this is with an analog stick. However, it becomes worse when the dash is fully upgraded. The dash input does not require a full input and will often activate when trying partially moving the stick in another direction. Did you jump towards a platform and tried to correct your movement? Congratulations, you've now dashed over the platform and fallen to the floor again. This happens CONSTANTLY, infact my accidental usage of the dash was 20x more than I wanted to use it, so much so that I had to swap to the DPad for specific platforming sections because my character just kept dashing over platforms. It's HORRENDOUS and actively brought the score of this game down for me. If you can stomach all of the above, go play this. Go back to the first paragraph, have a think about it and decide if this game is for you. After 100%ing it, I can absolutely say that this is not the game for me.
3/10 Metroid-like gameplay is enjoyable at times BUT: Terrible controls The graphics make your eyes bleed The sounds make your ears bleed
scowering the map for a key for 3 hours left a bad feeling
Axiom Verge is my favorite game I played so far this year. The amount of weapons you can discover alongside with the unique abilities you unlock is very great. I loved using the flamethrower and the gun that shot thin green lines everywhere. I love the pixel art style and the game has great boss designs. One complaint I would say is that the boss fights, specifically towards the later half of the game are not very engaging for me. For example for the final boss all you have to is spam upward dash while holding down attack to beat him and the second to last boss just felt like I was face tanking him till I actually killed him. Anyway the bosses aren’t the main focus of this game and everything else is great 9/10
