"Avencast: Rise of the Mage" ist ein isometrisches Action-RPG. Can be brutal at times, and a bit samey in places but good fun all round. A 70/100 effort. The good Patched to work on modern OSes and computers Spells are good Lots of weapon, spell and clothing/armour upgrades Story is pretty good too Action comes thick and fast Puzzles are clever The bad Some backtracking involved Fighting the same mobs gets old, especially toward end game Side quests are ho-hum
The game has a nicely designed intro and I was able to use the toilet with my character. The rest of this RPG was half-baked and with dull gameplay. I was running around with poor controls and spent most of the time mindlessly casting the same spell over and over again on Bullet Sponges. There weren't enough good other spells either.
That's a good and decent game. Especially for the time of its release. I admire the gameplay mechanics, it reminds me a good old Dungeon Siege 2. Leveling system is simple and straight forward, you don't need to overthink and in the case of this game - it is works just fine. Taking into account the time that has gone by I honestly can't recommend it to everybody, BUT if your are a fan of old school and Diablo (the 1st), Dungeon Siege 1\2 are not just a batch of sounds - you should definitely give it a try!
The game didn't age very well. Controls are clunky, enemies are bullet sponges (and you constantly feel underleveled because of it), most abilities are useless and the story telling is terrible. But it's still really fun for some reason. The camera control feels smooth, fights can be really mechanically challenging (at least when using blood magic), and you can tumble/dodge without having to use stamina. It's kind of a vibe while listening to music.
This is such a blast from the past. Every 5 years or so I randomly go back to this game and replay it. It's one of those 10/10 amongst the average titles of the past. It was close to being one of the big titles of forever. Yet like many other games at the time of great experimentation and creativity, it missed some marks and sadly fell into obscurity throughout the years. The game even has a Fame (highscore) system and I can't find a single place online where people compare their Fame. Today we live in a world of overabundance. So nothing stays in middle. Things are either the next best thing after discovering fire or they're complete forgotten. This game deserves to be remembered at least a little bit. The atmosphere, the gameplay and even the aesthetics of the graphics actually hold up in 2025. I would genuinely have fun competing with people for Fame points if SteamDB wasn't showing just me & 1 other person playing this cool little blast from the past.
Found this in my Steam library with no memory of it, so I figured I'd give it a go. Considering it came out in 2010, it somehow feels dated even for that era. It's also somehow nothing like the other games in the genres it claims to be a part of, like action RPG, rougelike, etc. I knew I was going to be in for a bad time when it said there was a separate button to turn the camera (or, depending on your chosen setting, you can't turn it at all which feels terrible for this game). Can't really recommend it in 2025. Walking into it just made me feel violently tired.
Mi juego favorito de la infancia
The game is fine, but it's a very old one, with rather experimental camera and controls, launch bugs, and overall mediocre quality. It's a shame, really, since a lot of work has been put into it, and it shows, yet playing it today bears no value: there are better options available for this experience, its own ideas were made better elsewhere, and there was no successor of any kind that'd make this game worth playing as a history or nostalgia treasure.
Cool combat system idea, not fun to play.
