The animation on the sprites is very clean and controlling your characters feels great. Do i wish they had a couple more colors, yes...but the game feels very fun to play regardless. You are constantly unlocking new ways to traverse the tower and dying does not feel like a punishment as much as a step on the journey. Very well done.
I have no nostalgia for metroidvanias or the snes era that the visuals of the game go for. The game is moderately difficult and the death system makes me think others will share the same thoughts. At each death you can spend currency to improve your characters and otherwise make your run easier. The runbacks from each deaths can be a bit tedious but thats a common weakness of the metroidvania genre. The highlight of the game was definitely the last boss. I plan on doing more exploration but not 100%ing the game, but the backlog calls to me. map percent: 67% item percent: 56% in game timer: 10 hours
I think I had more fun playing this than any of the actual Castlevania games.
A wonderful and challenging take on the search-action genre. Switching between characters to slowly make unique progress through the tower keeps gameplay fresh. I always want to see "just one more room" while I'm playing. The sense of relief when you make it back to a bonfire to save is intense. The upgrade system means dying isn't as frustrating as it would otherwise be. You almost always come back a bit stronger or with new, fresh, and interesting abilities. Astalon is a must play for anyone who loves the genre or retro-inspired games. The soundtrack is incredible, and the visuals are unique enough to stand out amidst the crowd of games with similar aesthetics. I can't wait to continue to explore the tower.
Excellent, gem of a game.
The good: Castle is very fun to explore Lots of items and upgrades to play with Control is smooth Music and art are both good, very 8-bit inspired The bad: A lot of backtracking It takes a while to get to a point where you can freely switch between characters Bosses are very easy Overall: I enjoyed it. It reminded me of a mashup of Metroid and Legacy of the Wizard on the NES. I wish they would have given you the ability to switch characters at any time right from the beginning. The game opened up a lot once I was able to do that. This is one of those games that's more exploration and backtrack heavy than combat-heavy. 8/10
Wonderful games like this don't come around very often. The visuals are perfect, the controls are snappy and the exploration is fantastic. It gives you that unique special feeling you got from discovering all the ins and outs of Super Metroid as a kid, but as an adult. The only criticism I can give it is that the bosses from the mid game onward were way too easy.
