Ascend to Zero was not the game I expected. It's genre is "Action Roguelike" but you'll probably find yourself spending more time crafting builds, upgrading gear and inventory management. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, if you like games where you have fun buildcrafting and min maxing your character to the absolute max. This game has that. The core gameplay loop of build management followed by quick paced bursts of gameplay activates the dopamine receptors in my brain in a weird way. I got a little addicted to it. It feels like all of this shouldn’t work, but it does. Though I think the speadsheet management to gameplay ratio could use a bit more balancing. On the negative side, the game is rough around the edges in a technical sense with some really bad cases of audio mixing, the story is competent, but if you find yourself moving through the game too quickly it can break the story a bit. And I think the game does get a little too grindy towards the end. On the positive side the soundtrack is very good. It's very electronic with some nice chillstep, dubstep and conventional EDM that sounds terrific. and also the game plays very well on steam deck. Full Video Review: https://youtu.be/YUApjiQCA4o
