What a surpsringly fun little kart racer! After coming extremely disappointed from trying out Garfield Kart 2, this game managed to redeem my faith in the genre a little bit. Animal Kart Racer 2 manages to deliver on something, that Garfield Kart 2 failed at: content and variety! Here, you will find 6 cups (2x the amount of Garfield Kart 2) with four racetracks each. And every racetrack is unique in its design and graphics (apart from the last cup which just features reversed tracks). This game features classic style racetracks like hazelwood hills, bonboni land, stone kindom, neon city etc. as well as some unique ones like "martian cemetary" or the "cheese moon". On top of that, it features water based race tracks like in Diddy Kong Racing! On the water tracks, the carts become tiny boats. Really nice addition! The game runs nicely and didn't crash once during my playthrough. It is quite a bit janky in its design though. It's clearly not made by experienced AAA-developers, so be prepared for wonky physics and stiff controls. It takes quite some time to get up to speed when a race starts and the track is full with debris and traps (which does bring a new strategic element to the game). The animal racers, although high in number and variety (you have a squirrel, wolf, rat, lizard, mouse, racoon, owl... you get the picture), but the 3D models are on the verge of nighmare fuel sometimes (especially that pink bunny). Also, there are only 3 items: rockets, bombs and lightning bolt (for boost). That's it! There really should be more items. The worst offender here, however, is the lack of any kind of multiplayer. I didn't expect a kart racer made in 2024 to be single player only and didn't check the steam page beforehand. What a letdown, not even split screen! On the bright side: the achievements are easy to get. Just finish every race and cup in 1st place. I was surprised by the amount of creativity and love poured into this game and it is certainly unique. Apart from the rainbow road racetrack there is not much taken from Mario Kart either. It's worth it on sale just to witness one of the jankiest intros (in a positive way) I have ever seen. The devs are definitely on the right track here.
game is good please add more items
Oh man, watched the store page video and bought it thinking this will be great for the kids. Local 4 player split screen shown in the video. But the steam release is only single player? Why? No multiplayer? https://imgur.com/a/W95sszM
game is subpar, the fun is almost there, i like the obstacles the course has to add an extra layer of fun but overall the racing feels out of touch, does pressing a accelerate? idk its moving i think it does, does it have a drift button? idk........ and the worst part, i wanted to play some multiplayer with my friends locally and theres only singleplayer...... pfttt refunded
To me this perfectly encapsulates what a 5/10 game is. It's really what it says on the tin: a kart racer with animals. You get 20 unique tracks + 4 reverse tracks that honestly have really fun layouts and designs that feel original (minus the Rainbow Road) and a whole lot of characters who look and feel unique as well. The driving, while slow to start, can be pretty satisfying once you start pulling off good turns and going faster. But the downsides really bring the game down. First off, the physics in this game are all over the place and are my biggest problem. Your kart will be flung up down and all around because of it. There are destructible objects littered around every track and if you run into them they break into multiple pieces and will stay there for the remainder of the race. And more often then not bumping into one of these pieces will push your kart upwards instead of you going right through it. And the other objects that can't be broken will usually stop you dead in your tracks upon hitting them. And hitting walls often leads you to start driving on two wheels. Also this is mitigated by having a button that resets your position, I just feel like this game would be so much better with these physics either being tuned or having less objects in general. The items also aren't great either. There are only three of them and the only one worth using is the boost, which admittedly can feel pretty good to use to zoom through the track. But the rockets are super hard to hit people with since they don't stay parallel to the track and the bombs are too small to consistently hit the other racers and even if they do run into them, there's a chance they'll just bounce of them instead of exploding. The enemy AI is also mostly way too easy, but sometimes they can get way too far ahead and you'll have no chance of catching up. Most of the tracks also feel too short with the Grand Prix mode only giving you two laps for around a minute of racing (single races give you three laps though). But all of this doesn't mean I didn't have fun with it. Picking a speedy character and going through the tracks with the boosts as fast as possible, pulling off tight turns, and the fun tracks made me not regret buying this game. I can also tell that although these devs are inexperienced, they clearly have a lot of passion and I know that Animal Kart Racer 3 or whatever comes next will be a lot better. 5/10 Recommended on sale if you want a fun 90ish minutes.
