“ALEA JACTA EST” (The Die is Cast) is what Caesar said as he crossed the Rubicon River when he learned that the Senate had removed him from his command. Crossing that small Italian river was equivalent to disobeying Rome’s orders and entering into open rebellion in this historical turn-based strategy wargame .

Probably one of the best Roman games I’ve played on PC since the RTR mod many years ago. It is just as complex as I.R but without the random events which ruins that game. The random events that happen on AJE are expected, like slave revolts, but they are manageable if you react, unlike I.R that takes half your empire. AJE is very complex (for me) and has taken me a long time just to get the basics so I can have a decent game, yet there is still so much more to learn which will take many weeks more. It is not an ‘arcade keep fighting’ game, there are so many things to take into account like supply, ammunition, replacements etc. Ignore your legions and attrition can see them vanish, as I found out with the navy I ignored for a couple of years. The map is fantastic to look at even though this is a TEN year old game. The accuracy is also very good with all major towns and regions and of course filters to help you find loyalty, supplies and ownership etc of areas. I would love to see this game improved, or another released, which adds battle graphics like the Grand Tactician game which adds to the game but does not go overboard with graphics like RTW. And maybe a whole (very long) scenario of the start of the Roman Empire until the end of its glory days. At present there are DLC’s but some are just too short for me and only cover that scenario, like Spartacus just being in Italy or Cantabrian Wars in Spain. However, some of them you can go past the ‘end point’ but you still cannot enter areas outside of that DLC scenario. i.e. you cannot enter Greece or France in the Spartacus DLC. One complaint about this game is the continuous ‘critical errors’ I get. There is no support and the forums mention so many Ageod games with the same problem. This puts me off purchasing the other DLC’s which I would love to play but not if they are going to crash. Currently I can save the game every 5 turns or so and in the event of a crash just reload back in and carry on but that ruins the gameplay for that ‘just one more turn’ moment. All in all, if you truly like Roman historical games, this is for you, if you prefer arcade type Roman Empire games, then RTW (first edition with RTR mod) is probably your choice. Having spent hundreds of hours playing RTW (and 177hours playing RTW2 – not so good as original) I prefer AJE. Although I have played less than 35 hours so far, I have spent many, many more reading the manual and watching the tutorial videos and still have so much more to learn. Hopefully the enjoyment can only increase with time.
Best simulation of Roman wars I played. Too bad new DLCs aren't made.
Best of the series.
A great game with many interesting scenarios.
Alea Jacta Est.
Constant crashes.
A truly wonderful game for history lovers. I miss (almost all) of the old AGEOD games so much. There just isn't anything out there like them in today's market.
