Age of Mythology: Extended Edition

This game has been around since forever and ran comfortably on windows NT with 16 megs ram on a p90. Yes I looked it up. The Steam version here has of course been purged by MS of the funny content like the wolves cleaning themselves, much like the abominable things they did to Conkers Reloaded, but enough of the original charm remains to make it still a good, comfy play. The combination of early AI and scripted events results in a wide variation in how a given level progresses, leading to very high replayability. Control is entirely based on the mouse and is an impressive tech demo of just how much a mouse can do, even as the only control. The music is appropriate and not overbearing. The surprising use of latin speech intermixed with English adds a bit of spice. The settings are pleasantly varied as are the scenarios, my favorite being A Long Way From Home with the mummies and the tamarisk tree. It only gets sloggy when the difficulty is too high to get past a level- In which case turn it down. The scene with the battering ram and tartarus gate in hades with the timed arrival of "reinforcements" was a major problem for me but ultimately doable, barely. Block the passages on the right side to have a chance. In conclusion, if you can find a way to play the original, it's preferable. If not, this works fine. It's a game that somehow came out near perfect and is always a pleasure to play, despite it's rather primitive design. I suppose judging it on those grounds would be like saying chess has primitive graphics. It's stood the test of time and remains an excellent game, so enjoy it!
