About
You are the Viceroy – a leader charged by the Scorched Queen to reclaim the wilderness and discover lost riches for the Smoldering City, civilization's last bastion against the Blightstorm that destroyed the old world. Unlike most survival city builders where your focus is on a single city, in Against the Storm you must build a vast, prosperous network of settlements populated by diverse fantasy races, each with their own specializations and needs.
The wilderness holds many hidden dangers, and never-ending storms will batter your population into submission. If your settlements should fall, then the expedition may end – but not the game. Against the Storm is a roguelite city builder, meaning you will carry forward the resources, upgrades, and experience of your past expeditions each time you set off for a new journey into the wild.

Foxes, beavers, and lizards stand alongside humans and harpies in the struggle to survive. Utilize each group's strengths as you balance their varying needs, from housing and culinary preferences to taste in luxuries and recreation. Will you manufacture raincoats, brew ale, and bake pies to boost morale in the face of the oppressive hostility of the forest, or will you prioritize the needs of one species over another to operate more swiftly for the Scorched Queen?

Experience core city builder gameplay enhanced by roguelite replayability. Build and manage multiple settlements spread out across a large world map, all while collecting valuable meta-progression resources to upgrade the Smoldering City. Feel the pressure of an expectant monarch as the Scorched Queen demands constant progress while recurring Blightstorms pose an inevitable threat to your settlements. Manage your reputation to secure your success at any one settlement before moving on to establish another, constantly seeking new opportunities for growth, taking on unique challenges across multiple biomes, and bracing for the inevitable destruction of everything but the Smoldering City itself. How will you maximize each cycle to not just ensure the best fate for the Smoldering City, but for your career as Viceroy as well?

With hundreds of gameplay modifiers and 6 distinct biomes, every city location presents unique challenges for even the most resourceful Viceroy. Adjust your strategy to changing weather conditions and experiment with rosters of building blueprints and perks that can help your society thrive or bring it to ruin. Will you take on and complete additional objectives and delve deeper into the dangerous forest for potential boons, or will you approach with caution to ensure you operate within your capabilities? All the while, you never know what wares the Trader will bring next year, and the forest holds treasures and resources, but also ancient threats.

Laying the foundations for a new city is one of the most exciting moments in a city-building game. In Against the Storm, you'll have the opportunity to repeatedly experience this by creating new settlements, while still interacting with your network of previously established cities in a growing world.

Didn't enjoy the logistical puzzle-solving, it's mostly fiddly upkeep and feels like busywork rather than fun.
Good game but i wish have controller support

I usually like these kinds of games and though I don't exactly hate this game, it didn't scratch any itches. The sound track is great, relaxing, and the sound of rain is a nice touch, that's about it for me. It felt like RNG had more of a say in if i was going to win or not. In the 3 games i played i felt like i was racing the clock to meet my objectives and then boom, it just ended. 2 of the times I didn't even notice i was close to winning my session, it just ended... Yipee? The game really boils down to a race against time and hoping you can get the right requirements (resources) at the right time to fulfill contracts. There are a lot of different resources and structures that allow you to gather said resources, as well as structures to further craft the resources into more complex resources. The maps are randomly generated so which resources will be available to gather is inconsistent. This offers replay value, making every session feel a little different (this is a good thing). Overall i think think this works, but the UI isn't the best and it didn't really help me with the upkeep managing process. I would often over consume a resource, have idling workers waiting on resources to produce other resources, or build a structure for a resource node, only to have 2-3 of those nodes through my entire session. There are a decent amount of structures in this game but not all are available to you each play through. You will reach certain milestones that allow you to pick from 2-3 random blueprints of structures, so there is rng that you have navigate in hopes of winning. The queen will give you a choice of 2 random "Orders" to complete in order to get more blueprints. These contracts are random and will ask for things like "get X amount of resources", "Have 8 of a certain race type", "search X amount of nodes in the forest". You must complete these contracts in order to get enough points to win your current session. These contracts will somewhat dictate what buildings you need to gather resources to progress and fulfill them, but since the offered blueprints are random you will have to hope you get the right building in order to gather the right resource. On top of this you'll have to hope you find the right resource node and enough of it. Otherwise you'll be looking for other ways to obtain the needed resource, hoping those ways are available as well. There is no combat and that's okay, but the mechanics of what i was doing felt repetitive. The flow was: Find resource, build structure to gather resource (if available), use resource to make other resource or structure to craft more resources. There were rarely moments where i was deciding on gathering one resource vs another. For the most part i wanted any and every resource that popped up. I'm sure at higher difficulties you have to be more decisive, but it wasn't like there was an abundance of resource nodes for me to decide between anyway. I also didn't feel that tackling a harder difficulty would be rewarding since it relies heavily on rng. Good: Music was solid and relaxing. A decent amount of variables. A cool progression system. Bad: The UI isn't great. Resource management wasn't fun for me. Too much rng for the variables and requirements and sometimes lacking in ways to get said requirments.
Against the storm adds a twist to city builder games. instead of building indefinitely with no purpose but growth, AtS gives players challenges and targets, mixing the Citybuilder with Rougelike genres. you will definitly spend hundreds of hours playing this game. totally recommend for lovers of city builders and rougelike games.
A thinking mans game. A bit like a deck builder within a city builder, Very addictive. Games last may be 1-3 hours depending on your speed, but you'll want to play 2-4 maps and suddenly 8 hours later...
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Recommended I originally only planned to try Against the Storm because it was free to play for the weekend. I figured I'd play for an hour or two just to see what it was like. Instead... I somehow ended up putting 16 hours into it over two days. This game really surprised me. What I liked: Deep gameplay – There's a lot to learn, and every run teaches you something new. It has enough complexity to keep you engaged without feeling overwhelming. Great visuals – The graphics are clean, detailed, and fit the atmosphere of the game really well. Challenging – It can be tough, but the difficulty options let you find the level that's right for you. Excellent city builder – City builders are one of my favorite genres, and this one adds a unique roguelite twist that keeps every settlement feeling fresh. I came in expecting a free weekend demo, and I left buying the game. If you enjoy city builders, resource management, and games that reward planning and adapting, this is definitely worth checking out. 16 hours in two days is probably the best recommendation I can give.
🔸 PUNTUACIÓN FINAL: 5/10 📝 REVIEW IN ENGLISH 🔶 An impeccable blend of mechanics weighed down by a gameplay loop that can become monotonous. 📝 REVIEW IN ENGLISH It's hard for me to give this game a negative review. It's not a bad game, but it felt so repetitive to me that after finishing all the tutorials and playing the first two maps, I had no desire to keep doing the same thing over and over with minor changes. The ideas are very well implemented, but the fact of seeing that you do practically the same thing made me lose the interest to continue. ✅ Pros: • Very original concept that merges city-building with deck-building and rogue-lite elements. • Clean user interface and mechanics that work flawlessly and smoothly. ❌ Cons: • Gameplay loop that feels highly repetitive right from the first few runs. • Lack of real short-term variety to justify sticking with it for certain player profiles. 🎯 Conclusion: A well-executed title with great ideas on paper, but its structure can quickly burn you out if you are looking for a more varied and traditional progression in the strategy genre. 🔸 FINAL SCORE: 5/10
