The best part of this game is that it has a name my Husky can pronounce. The worst part is that they'd rather sequelize than just turn new track compilations into DLC. I never argue ON BEHALF of DLC, but if you're going to be the Wipeout XL of rhythm games, in the vein of Guitar Hero, it makes sense. What doesn't make sense is launching an entirely different but exactly the same game to play more of exactly these kinds of tracks this game was already for. That was a weird choice.
日本語まとめは最後 (A Japanese summary is at the bottom.)
Try 2h
Although 92% reviews are positive, it doesn't reflect the truth well. Only 83% players beat the 2nd stage, and 64% the 3rd. [1] And this downward curve continues. See the global achievement stat . Anyway if it hooks you, you'll see it within 2hr. Try, and like or refund. Table of Contents * Pros * A rhythm game? On-rails shooter? * Die-and-learn loop [1] Among those who've beaten the 1st stage.
Pros
A really unique game. You can respect the developer's creativity and the challenge. (People say this game was inspired by Rez .)
A rhythm game? On-rails shooter?
Neither. Rather it is a precision parkour, and has a twin-stick shooter element. You can freely move, so it's not on-rails shooter at all. This is a stage based game, which is not so usual in "pure" rhythm games, in which you can freely choose a track to play. You don't have much motivation to play former stages. [2] You always tilt the left stick maximally, and what matters is the direction (except when you're releasing the left stick.) A trajectory (called "ribbon") is shown, and by following it accurately, you get higher score. Trajectories bend on points synchronized to beats, and this is the reason of the "rhythm" tag. However what you do is rotate the analog stick. This is not so precise by nature, so you don't get the sense of "sync-ing to the rhythm". Furthermore obstacles are there. You have to avoid them or you die. This is the parkour element. Sometimes there's some enemies. You lock on with the right stick, and shoot. By this way this game is a shooter. [2] There's the hard mode for each stage, but it's too difficult for most players. See the above mentioned achievement stat.
Die-and-learn loop
You have to memorize the levels by dying repeatedly. In addition for me it is worsend by bad visual discernibility. (Watch trailers. You might find it ok.) As I said you have to beat the current stage to progress. Replaying the same stage that lasts minutes again and again is not fun. (Not like Super Meat Boy or Celeste.) This game is a bit diffucult for me, but it is funny
I love Rhytm and Shooter games and even tho im really good at them, especially on Keyboard, Aaero made me realise really quickly how bad and inaccurate my Controller actually is lol
no dont buy that if you only want to do normal (1 or 2 hours) the game is fine but when you get furter its get AFFUL. this is why only 4% get the first level and stop there... look a the achievement dont look at the comment like me, every level have a achievement. Every attack are impossible to avoid, you have to shoot a them but you simply cannot shoot fast ennough to kill everything... also there is no respawn protection so you just get spawn kill after you first death why having 3 life? you only do 2 thing, follow a line and shoot at thing, how can a dev screw this bad? brain death dev... dont buys
I guess not enough people gave enough of a damn to review this game, there is no other way I can explain the "very positive" reviews to myself. Since not even 50% of players finished the first level, not even 40% managed to finish the second and about 30% finished the third, there is reason to believe that the majority of reviews are pretty misleading. I didn't like the music, which is fine since that is subjective but my controller (PS4) either wasn't properly supported or didn't work right for this game apparently, which is pretty bad for a game that forces you to play with a controller and the gameplay unfortunately is rather boring aswell. It offers a unique but rather boring experience. I unfortunately cannot recommend this at all, since there are just way superior alternatives, that offer more variety in songs or even the ability to chose your own, aswell as greater and more exciting gameplay for way less money or even for free. (3.8/10)
this game is so utterly terrible. the levels feel insanely long and tedious. 1/10
very fun, completed normal mode in just 2 hours, there is advanced and master difficulties which are grindy and takes perfect mechanics but personally not what im getting into. the normal mode was fun. was worth the -80% sale price, i would grab on sale
Someone poured their heart into this game, and it shows.
TL;DR: Nah mate. Not newbie friendly at all, and lacking Linux support for more than one letterboxed resolution without a mod. Doesn't support Playstation controller rumble OOTB. Some of this stuff may have been fixed in the second game, but looking at reviews it doesn't look like it and I am not willing to buy it just to see. It should be noted I have joined the discord and asked about the letterboxing issue and haven't received a response yet. The review will be updated if I do. On launch I was greeted with an extremely loud intro sound along with letterboxing on the top and bottom of my screen. Further searching revealed this is an issue that others have had which seems to have gone unaddressed for at least 7 years with the only fix being to install some random dude's mod. I launched into the tutorial and it was just a video showing you gameplay and how moving the left stick influences the ship. Gameplay: After watching the tutorial I started the first song "Bass Cannon" which was okay. It was a pretty good introduction except for there were enemies and at the time I had no idea what they were so I just tried to dodge their attacks, thinking this was the only way to deal with them. As it turns out, you have to use your right stick to aim at enemies and the right trigger to shoot (I'll get more into this mechanic later). This wouldn't have been a problem if the tutorial actually showed you fighting an enemy and using said controls. I also noticed that rumble support for Playstation controllers was completely missing, so I enabled Steam Input which fixed the issue but made the game display the wrong controller glyphs (yes I know how it works). I played a few other songs and, suddenly, there were new enemies that had no introduction whatsoever. By this point I had figured out how to fire and was now trying to juggle staying on the ribbon as well as firing at enemies I had never seen before with new mechanics which could screw up your run because you forgot to spam the trigger. The game pretty much relies on you trying songs multiple times in order to understand the enemies and traps introduced in each. This gets boring quite fast, as you'd imagine. There is a "chillout mode" which still has enemies with infinite lives but for some reason keeps the timer after you die to be able to keep playing. It is confusingly labelled and not immediately visible. Graphics: Meh. They're interesting but really you'll be focusing on staying on the line and firing at enemies. There is no anti-aliasing but you'll forget that pretty quick, and the letterboxing goes out of your mind when you start focusing on the game. Music: Not for me. It's electronic which I'm not a huge fan of. The gameplay doesn't influence it enough either. I also struggle to find a connection between moving your joystick and the music.
