It's a solid Ys game, I personally like it more than Nox in terms of overall visual design and flow. My main gripe with the game would be the ship combat. And this is what this review will be about as I've got nothing interesting to say about the rest of the game lol It's, uh, well calling it "basic" would be a compliment. It's like the devs thought "pirates are cool!" and then had a week to implement the whole thing. If we look at another game that didn't need boats, that game being "Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii", then we can see what it feels like when the devs actually know how to implement a concept well. In Ys it feels wonky to control, there are no physics, the graphics take a nosedive during those sections (which is funny considering there is nothing to render) and the ocean is split into tiny sections. I guess this was due to the fact that the game released on the Switch as well, but we have AC3 running on that console and the boat combat there is miles above. For the next game I hope they either scrap the concept entirely or actually refine it into something that is engaging. But yeah other than that it's a great Ys game, especially if you didn't buy the other version first.
Ys X is the Wind Waker of the Ys series. You quickly get tasked with manning a boat and rescuing villagers, and the game's story progresses from there. The combat is revised, featuring two main characters, a different parry/guard system where you mostly guard but can parry certain blue attacks which are also unguardable, and a revenge system where a skill damage multiplier builds up as you successfully guard attacks. Flash guard gives you more revenge meter and a powerful counter attack, and guarding/parrying certain enemy strong attacks triggers an attack cutscene where you get a free power hit in. Overall I found the game to be about as good as Ys IX, and slightly worse than VIII. Between the regular enemies, the bosses, the story, the raids, and all the sailing, it never really wore itself out even after 35+ hours of playing. The design is very good, for instance there are certain events that are easy to fail, and if you fail 3 times the game will start giving you the option to proceed as if you succeeded. There's also various difficulty levels including an Easy mode which will let you slice through the gameplay and focus on experiencing the story. Saving can be done almost anywhere and lets you resume from exactly where you saved. Frequent checkpoints after death prevent you from losing much if any progress if you lose a fight. Did I mention that you get a hoverboard? Imagine speedrunning the game by using the hoverboard to zip past enemies. There's another skill later that makes doing this even cooler and easier. One thing I did not like is that once you get Mana Sense, it makes sense (pun) to spam it constantly so you don't miss any buried treasure chests. It also lets you see enemies and treasures through walls. So there's a lot of incentive to spam that ability constantly, which isn't particularly interesting to do. As for vanilla Ys X vs. Proud Nordics the general consensus is that Proud Nordics is the definitive version of Ys X. At 35 hours of gameplay, that's about $2 per hour of gameplay at the list price. Pretty good overall.
