I'd give this one a mixed review if I could. The game is decently entertaining for what it is, but all of it is just so basic. The combat, both on foot and on your ship, never really changes and it's functional at best. Exploration is decent and the islands themselves are mostly fine, but enemy variety is lacking and the side content is mostly too hard to even find. For instance, some of them want you to find 5 things scattered around the literal entire map with zero indication of where they might be. But the game's biggest problem is that it's got truly awful art direction that makes it look like a CGI cartoon for small children. That and the cutscenes are awful, with terrible voice acting and some of the worst animations and lipsyncing (or lack thereof) you'll ever see. Not a bad way to spend 10ish hours but there's just not much of note here.
Okay so huge disclaimer starting off. I gave this game a thumbs up but it is difficult to recommend. I'll explain. I was looking for a pirate game. Something that had the vibe, the music, the bright colorful islands to loot and explore. There's nothing out there that is like THE pirate game. I play Sea of Thieves and yeah I've played Black Flag so I was looking for something a little more single player action/adventure with a story ya know? I tried the demo of this knowing it wasn't going to be amazing after reading reviews. It scratched the itch enough for me to buy it on sale. Now I'm going to be up front with you. The game isn't great. It's okay. It's got what I wanted at the time so I did enjoy my experience but it's like watching a bad move because you know it's bad and you laugh at how bad it is. This game is like the "We have Mario Pirate Adventures" at home. That sounds like a dope game actually. Nintendo you gunna get on that? F Nintendo. Anyways the voice acting is so bad. I feel bad for these people. Maybe they had fun but oof it's not good...that being said I had a lot of "lol" moments listening to the dialogue. It just sounds like the VAs were given no context at all for what they were saying. The story is also pretty laughable. The main character is also not all that likable. She's kind of an ass and doesn't seem very intelligent either. That being said all the characters behave like the background characters in a bad PIXAR movie. Look I'm not saying I could do any better seriously. I'm just a dummy looking for a simple pirate game and this was the best I could find lol. Here's some real constructive criticism for the dev team though. The vibe of this game as a whole seems very geared towards a younger audience. However, the language and some of the challenges involved in the puzzles and combat make it not so child friendly. I was not expecting some of the swears that came out of these adorable characters' mouths. No F bombs but still PG-13 level stuff. Just seemed out of place and unnecessary. TLDR: I'm not telling you to not buy it. I'm just making sure you know what you're getting if you do. Do not expect a rich story with in depth character building/development. If you want to be a pirate chick, sail a ship and shoot other ships, hack up some skeletons and the navy (fight the machine!) you might enjoy this one. Just don't expect a polished smooth experience with a ground breaking story line and award winning voice acting. Buy it on sale if you can. The more discounted the better.
I don't really write reviews, (as you can tell from my many years of being on Steam and my lack of reviews!) buuuut... really fun game! It has a large open world to sail around in and discover islands, and really scratches the itch of exploring each corner of a location to pick up an item to add to your inventory to craft something later on. The story is interesting so far and I'm very much enjoying that each island is sort of a small dungeon that you can travel to whilst travelling on the open seas collecting items to craft with and picking fights with other ships. There are also monster encounters such as Megalodons etc. There are a few dungeon and island environmental puzzles which I have come across, but nothing too taxing that I couldn't solve withing a minute or two. They were just a fun distraction! Some of the cons are that the game still has a few bugs (which I have reported), and performance has the occasional stutter (although it's not so bad for me on a 4090, i9 13900, 64gb laptop) and the pop-in of LoD on islands and ships/crates in the open world whilst sailing about can be a little distracting (but you don't notice it after a while). Also, you can kind of tell that the voice actors were just given their lines without context to what the previous person had told them, because the delivery was just not quite right. Decent voice acting though! Apart from this, a lot of love has gone into this game from a small team that believes in what they are making, and it shows. There is some great exploration sailing round in an open world, collecting gear for crafting and upgrading your ship, weapons and costumes, skill tree upgrading, banter with associates that you pick up on the way, great soundtrack too! The controls both on foot and on the seas is nice and reactive with a controller. There's no auto centering of the camera which is fantastic! I really like this game. It feels cosy and I'm enjoying it very much after 8 hours of gameplay. I usually find that I have 4 states of play: I buy a game and don't like it straight away and give up. I buy a game and spend 10 hours on it and either finish it or give up. I buy a game and spend 30-40 hours on it and either finish it or give up. I buy a game and spend 100-500 hours on it and keep coming back to it over the years (usually Bethesda/Bioware etc. games and open world stuff). This is easily a 40+ hour game for me (I'm a very methodical player and like slowly exploring every inch of the world, I will typically double or triple the hours compared to a "How Long to Beat" listing for a game) <3

As long as the boys can save the game, this might end up being a good pirate game for kids. There's auto save but there was an instance where I went to another Island, walked around and the last auto save was on the last Island that I've been at, thank god I did a manual Save. If it had a better autosave/checkpoint system it wouldn't even need a manual saving system to be honest. The amount of freedom to go everywhere you want is pretty cool, as a Kid I would've loved being able to do it.
This game is GOOD with many remarks... ✓ Simple adventure (no big challenge) ✓ Nice story (same vibe as kid animation series) ✓ Pirate fantasy ✓ Potential to do better BUT at this moment it still needs many of polishing before I can call it a GREAT game... (aside from bugs/glitches) - FOV setting to help reduce motion sickness - QoL features like 'Buy/Sell all' - More depth in combat gameplay, such as more attack moves (for both protagonist and enemies) - Ability balancing (in the current version, just spam an HP regen skill can survive most of the game) - Cutscenes that could have much more impact with better timing and SFX I recommend this game because it has a lot of good resources available for further development. And I hope this game eventually reaches a point where it's worth the price.
I am enjoying it so far, it has the right mix of navigation at sea and exploration and combat on land. Visually very vibrant and with a good pirate ambience. Hard not to laugh in front of Captain Zack :D
It's fun! I like it!
