This game is mired in lazy, bargain bin design. Tedious, monotonous combat centered around a sloppy implementation of spot-countering attacks and skill spamming. I'll give the bosses a pass, not that most of them do anything particularly unique, but at least they break up screen after screen of identical enemy mobs. The raid "minigame" just interrupts the immersion of exploring and following what crumbs of a story exist for more of the same combat grind, but while also trying to do things like DEFEND BAIT STATIONS and put yourself between enemies and bait stations so you can parry their attacks because a scorecard of how well you stopped your village from dying demands it. Exploration riddled with nonsensical map breaks and tiny ridges that act as full walls so they can show off more scenery that you can't go into, and that's when they aren't separating chunks of the SAME MAP WITH THEM, forcing you to go the long way around places you easily clear with a jump so Adol doesn't stub his pinky toe. Also countless sections where a jump just isn't enough to get on top of a thing, when you can physically watch Adol's character model clear it. I get it, at some point I'll get a double jump or some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nonsense and then have to come back here because climbing is for losers. I got as far the insect repellant, which is required to, and I ♥♥♥♥ you not, break beehives that have been conveniently horizontally strung across entire passages to prevent progress. Your swords can't break them. A guy swinging a boat anchor can't break them. NOPE. Disposable insect repellant is literally the only thing that causes them to magically explode. This is after an area where I couldn't climb on ivy until I found... a special pair of gloves, even though I'm already wearing gloves. Just... why? It's not just that they're using stupid obstacles to gate progress, it's that they're using stupid solutions too, seemingly mocking the intelligence of everyone involved. I just can't with this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Literally hundreds upon hundreds of games have come out in the past 30 years that do nearly everything this game is trying to do, but markedly better. How have the Y's creators managed to learn and adapt so little and so badly with so much of the formula literally handed to them???

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana stands as a remarkable entry in the long-running Ys series, blending fast-paced action RPG combat with an emotionally resonant narrative and rich world-building. Developed by Nihon Falcom, the game transports players to the mysterious Isle of Seiren, where the protagonist Adol Christin and his companions find themselves shipwrecked and struggling for survival. The title successfully balances exploration, story, and combat, delivering a compelling experience for both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise. The narrative of Ys VIII is one of its strongest elements. It unfolds through the intertwined stories of Adol and Dana, a mysterious girl whose origins and connection to the island slowly reveal themselves as the game progresses. The story expertly weaves themes of survival, mystery, and ancient lore, creating a captivating atmosphere that drives players to explore every nook and cranny of the island. The writing is enriched by well-developed characters whose relationships evolve naturally, making the emotional stakes feel genuine rather than forced. Gameplay centers on dynamic, real-time combat that is both accessible and deep. Players control a party of characters, each with distinct abilities and playstyles, and can switch between them on the fly. The combat system encourages aggressive tactics, emphasizing dodging, timed attacks, and using character-specific skills to break enemy defenses. Boss battles are particularly engaging, often requiring players to adapt strategies and master dodging patterns, making each encounter feel rewarding. Beyond combat, the game features a robust crafting and resource management system, where players gather materials to upgrade equipment, build facilities, and improve their survival chances on the island. Exploration is another cornerstone of Ys VIII. The island is sprawling and varied, featuring diverse environments such as dense forests, ancient ruins, and subterranean caverns. The design encourages thorough exploration, with hidden secrets, side quests, and optional bosses scattered throughout. The game also incorporates a survival aspect, where players must manage resources like food and medicine to keep their party healthy. This adds a layer of realism and urgency, making the island feel like a living, breathing world. Visually, Ys VIII impresses with vibrant, colorful landscapes and detailed character models that bring the island and its inhabitants to life. The art style is anime-inspired, blending bright palettes with atmospheric lighting to create a visually appealing experience. The soundtrack complements the action perfectly, featuring energetic battle themes and serene melodies that enhance exploration and storytelling moments. Voice acting is solid, primarily in Japanese with subtitles available, adding to the immersive quality without detracting from the narrative flow. While Ys VIII delivers a thoroughly enjoyable experience, it is not without minor drawbacks. Some players might find the survival mechanics somewhat intrusive, especially when managing inventory and resources during intense exploration or combat sequences. Additionally, the story pacing can feel uneven at times, with certain plot points stretching longer than necessary, which might disrupt narrative momentum. However, these issues are relatively minor compared to the overall quality and depth the game offers. In summary, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is a standout action RPG that combines engaging combat, rich storytelling, and expansive exploration into a memorable adventure. Its blend of emotional depth and high-energy gameplay provides a satisfying balance that appeals to a broad audience. For players seeking an action RPG with a strong narrative backbone and rewarding gameplay systems, Ys VIII represents a polished and compelling journey worth embarking upon. Rating: 9/10
I went into this game with no expectations at all, but man what a amazing game and story. If i had to explain to you the story to this game I would genuinely struggle because its so complex and story rich. The first couple hours was pure just exploration but the story picked up right around the 3rd chapter and never failed to make you lose interest after that. This game has multiple endings and if you want the best possible ending you would have to pour an extra 20 hours. which screw that I looked it up and it really gave a satisfying conclusion to this whole story. OST: 8.9/10 Gameplay: 8/10 Story: 9/10 characters: 8.9/10 overall rating would just be a 9/10, play it you wont regret it.
This is the final game I finished before 2024 ended. After a lot of time delaying the inevitable, I had to say goodbye to Adol and the other people of Seiren. 2024 has been a great year for discovering JRPGs. This game has been recommended by a lot of YouTubers and when the Steam Sales began, it was at such a great price that I had to get it. And right now, I’m getting way more bang for my buck with this game. In this game, you play as the adventurer Adol Cristin. Stranded on a mysterious and dangerous island, you must figure out a way to survive and escape. Now add a world-destroying secret, time-travel, and an amnesiac lady named Dana. It’s up to you to bring together all the castaways and solve the mystery behind this island. The game’s story and the characters are really what make this game shine. The interactions and subtle humor are my favorite parts. Watching the castaway village grow and seeing your companions become closer as you progress is very heartwarming. I always make it a priority to talk to everyone after a major plot happens. The action combat is not as complex as other games, but the variety of skills per character and their multiple playstyles give it enough steam to overcome boredom. Enemies are also varied with lots of attack patterns to memorize. I never really got the perfect timing for the blocks and dodges, but thankfully the game provides a lot of healing materials. Slowly uncovering the secrets and mapping out the island is a good measure of progress. There are some backtracking but the fast travel system never make it tedious. There are also a variety of side content that help the player in the main storyline as well. This is a masterpiece that should be enjoyed fully. And you should, if you want to see the true good ending. This game really got me interested in the other Ys games and now that I’m done with this game, I will miss the companions here (because I know they’re not coming back). I will miss Sahad’s bellyful laugh the most.
