Ys VIII is a true sense of adventure in a video game also the soundtrack shreds
This was my first YS game ever I had not been exposed to the franchise at all and wow. This game is genuinely peak and i'm not saying that lightly I REALLY enjoyed my time here the combat, story, characters, while I was skeptical at first I honestly loved every moment. Firstly the combat, it felt genuinely great i felt it was my #1 JRPG game combat system I have ever played, While simple there is diversity and you are well rewarded for playing good hitting a block or dodge felt wonderful with that 3s of iframe and dmg boot + you can do another and it stacks? genuinely peak. The game is spammy but in a good way I like pressing buttons and the game let me go wild + there's alot of diversity there is 6 playable characters(9 if you count the flashbacks) with atleast 10 skills each. I was able to rotate my playstyle whenever i wanted and never got tired of the combat at all. Definitely 9/10 if not 10/10 combat. The story, Look I was skeptical at first but 10 hours in and it clicked, There's tons of mystery and the plot goes from small to extremally HIGH stakes the plot from hour 1 to hour 40 is unrecognizable I wouldn't even think it was the same game. Every single character except 1(i'll get into that later) has a character "arc" or some type of development, even the randoms. It was great to see. With no spoilers I really liked the story trying to piece things together myself. The story successfully invoked emotion in me and was GENUNELY depressing at times but happy and funny at others. Just do all the side quests to get the true ending if not I heard you get a scuffed one. The characters have great chemistry and it was a treat seeing them interact the interactions felt genuine and like I said there is alot of development, I didn't find myself hating any characters each person had a place in the story. All but 1. Adol the main character. I dont know if this is a YS thing but Adol hour 1 is exactly the same as Adol hour 50 he has a story he has backstory but nothing happens with it, it seems he is just there to "adventure" and "save the day", he is a voiceless but not since he has voicelines in some random places but he will just nod his head or another character would talk for him. He felt like a disgrace to the entire cast having him there its really a shame, he has the strongest kit IMO and was the most fun to play so i cant really ignore him either. The progression is normal you find gear and the game really rewards you for exploring, it felt great just running around opening chests for loot, the gameplay loop of exploration and combat was fun. The Music is really good too. Ys8 is great and I would REALLY recommend it to anyone, just play it for a bit since the game doesn't pick up for a few hours. Its one of the best JRPGs i'd ever played.

This is the final game I finished before 2024 ended. After a lot of time delaying the inevitable, I had to say goodbye to Adol and the other people of Seiren. 2024 has been a great year for discovering JRPGs. This game has been recommended by a lot of YouTubers and when the Steam Sales began, it was at such a great price that I had to get it. And right now, I’m getting way more bang for my buck with this game. In this game, you play as the adventurer Adol Cristin. Stranded on a mysterious and dangerous island, you must figure out a way to survive and escape. Now add a world-destroying secret, time-travel, and an amnesiac lady named Dana. It’s up to you to bring together all the castaways and solve the mystery behind this island. The game’s story and the characters are really what make this game shine. The interactions and subtle humor are my favorite parts. Watching the castaway village grow and seeing your companions become closer as you progress is very heartwarming. I always make it a priority to talk to everyone after a major plot happens. The action combat is not as complex as other games, but the variety of skills per character and their multiple playstyles give it enough steam to overcome boredom. Enemies are also varied with lots of attack patterns to memorize. I never really got the perfect timing for the blocks and dodges, but thankfully the game provides a lot of healing materials. Slowly uncovering the secrets and mapping out the island is a good measure of progress. There are some backtracking but the fast travel system never make it tedious. There are also a variety of side content that help the player in the main storyline as well. This is a masterpiece that should be enjoyed fully. And you should, if you want to see the true good ending. This game really got me interested in the other Ys games and now that I’m done with this game, I will miss the companions here (because I know they’re not coming back). I will miss Sahad’s bellyful laugh the most.
"Once we get off o’ this island, we’re all gonna go back to the lives we had before we met. But we’re still gonna cherish that we even met in the first place." Personal Score: 4.5 / 5 This was an amazing well-paced game that I found myself on some nights staying up longer than intended because I lost track of time exploring, questing or pushing the story. Great cast of characters, love the dual-protagonist story, good music, nice visuals, and fun combat. Some small gripes/desires I had with the game were: - Relatively restrictive Dana side (wish the whole island was accessible on her side with other lore quests or just more fun side quests / discoveries). - I wish Dana side had party members, even if it was just 1 or 2. Not that it was needed, moreso for the party-adventure feel. - While there was indeed voice acting, I found myself wanting more to be done, kind of felt like ¼ to ⅓ of the game felt voice acted, ⅓ to ½ would be nice [ DIFFICULTY ] 📈 ☐ Easy ✅ Normal ☐ Hard ☐ "Dark Souls" Category Note: With the exception of a few end game content and optional bosses, the overall difficulty of the game felt relatively normal. Having weapons that you stick with and upgrade with material you discover in new areas feels well tuned with the majority of monsters you encounter. Flash guarding / moving are cool mechanics that can still be tough to consistently get on a first playthrough but make for a skillful layer in combat. [ VISUALS ] 🏞️ ☐ Bad ☐ Okay ✅ Good ☐ Beautiful ☐ Pixel - Bad ☐ Pixel - Good Category Note: The character designs were great and the environments were well designed. Considering its original release in 2016 Japan on the PS Vita, the visuals are relatively strong and very charming. Ys 8 is the title to essentially define the modern Ys era where the series moves to 3D, free camera, party-based action combat. [ LENGTH ] ⏳ ☐ Short (2-6 hours) ☐ Decent (7-12 hours) ☐ Long (13-20 hours) ✅ Very Long (21+ hours) ☐ Infinite Category Note: On my playthrough, I went for 100% reputation, quests, and map. This alone took me 50+ hours after getting the credits. You can easily spend way more time to truly 100% the game. [ MUSIC ] 🎵 ☐ Bad ☐ It’s there ✅ Good ☐ Amazing ☐ Chiptune - Bad ☐ Chiptune - Good / Remastered Category Note: A lot of soundtracks that I liked so much I put on a playlist. My personal favorites are Sunshine Coastline and the final boss. Overall I would say ⅔ of the soundtracks were solid, and ⅓ were very good. [ STORY ] 📜 ☐ Couldn’t tell ☐ It's there ✅ Well written ☐ Life changing Category Note: This was a very good story. While the early parts felt like it executed adventure tropes well, the narrative starts to take shape by introducing cause and effect through dual-protagonists. On the way to piecing the plot together, you meet a great cast while trying to overcome equally impactful sub-plots. [ FUN ] 🎮 ☐ Not really ☐ Acquired taste ✅ Pretty Good ☐ Ride of your life ☐ Turn based - Bad ☐ Turn based - Good Category Note: Movement in this game is fast paced and makes for fun combat and traversing. Sprinting, Dodging, Flash Moving, Flash Guarding, Double Jumping, Mid-Air Attacks, Diving Attacks etc. all make for a very engaging combat experience. Skill animations were good and each character’s weapon type gave a relatively healthy mix. I also liked the idea of finding people throughout the island to recruit to the village. Progressing the story and building the village, going on hunts with them or raid assists felt rewarding and bestowed a sense of comradery. [ REPLAYABILITY ] 🔄 ☐ One-time experience ✅ Only for achievements ☐ Definitely ☐ Infinite Category Note: Quests and some recruits are missable. A good amount of reputation is also tied to quests, so if you miss a quest you end up not being able to max out certain reputation with people.
