Yokai Art 2: Tales of the Nine-Tails builds upon the strategic foundation established by its predecessor while expanding both its world and gameplay systems in meaningful ways. Developed by Secret Labo and published by Secret Labo, Reborn Entertainment, and Tora Creatives, the game blends tower defense, tactical strategy, and roguelite progression into an adventure inspired by Japanese folklore. The story follows Hiro after his victory over Fujin and Raijin, only for peace to be interrupted when Sanbi begins hearing a mysterious call tied to her forgotten origins as the legendary nine-tailed fox. This premise gives the campaign a stronger narrative drive, encouraging players to uncover ancient secrets while confronting supernatural enemies across a variety of mystical landscapes. At its core, the gameplay revolves around thoughtful planning instead of quick reflexes. Each battle takes place on grid-based maps where positioning allies correctly is just as important as selecting the right units for the encounter. Every stage introduces different enemy formations and combat challenges that reward careful preparation over reckless offense. Defeating hostile yokai grants spiritual energy that can be invested in strengthening the team, while Powerstones unlock evolved versions of characters with enhanced abilities and more devastating attacks. These progression systems create a satisfying loop of experimentation, allowing players to continually adjust their strategies while discovering increasingly powerful combinations capable of overcoming tougher battles and intimidating boss encounters. The roster of recruitable yokai is one of the game's biggest attractions. Every companion contributes unique strengths to the battlefield, encouraging players to build balanced teams instead of relying on a single dominant strategy. The roguelite elements also add replay value by making each run feel slightly different depending on the upgrades and character combinations available. Rather than becoming repetitive, the campaign steadily introduces fresh tactical considerations that motivate players to refine their approach as new enemies and abilities become available. Steam Cloud support and achievements further enhance the experience by providing convenient progression tracking and additional goals for dedicated players. Visually, Yokai Art 2 embraces a colorful anime-inspired aesthetic that fits its mythological setting remarkably well. Character illustrations are expressive, enemy designs are imaginative, and the environments effectively capture the mystical atmosphere of ancient legends. The combination of vibrant effects, supernatural creatures, and folklore-inspired architecture helps establish a memorable identity that separates the game from more generic fantasy strategy titles. The developers also openly acknowledge that certain visual assets, such as some icons and background elements, were initially generated with AI assistance before being refined by artists, resulting in an overall presentation that remains cohesive while allowing the team to focus on polishing the broader experience. Although the game delivers an enjoyable blend of strategy and progression, it is not entirely free from limitations. Players seeking fast-paced action may find the methodical pace of its tactical battles slower than expected, especially during later stages that demand careful resource management and precise positioning. The narrative serves its purpose by connecting the various encounters and giving Sanbi's personal journey emotional significance, but it remains secondary to the strategic gameplay rather than becoming the primary attraction. Likewise, while the optional mature character artwork may appeal to some audiences, it remains a relatively minor feature that never overshadows the game's focus on tactical combat. Overall, Yokai Art 2: Tales of the Nine-Tails successfully refines the ideas introduced in the first game while offering greater strategic depth, a stronger sense of progression, and an engaging mythological setting. Its combination of tactical combat, tower defense mechanics, collectible yokai, and roguelite systems creates a rewarding experience that consistently encourages experimentation and careful decision-making. Fans of strategy games inspired by East Asian folklore will find plenty to appreciate, while newcomers willing to invest time in mastering its mechanics will discover an adventure that offers satisfying challenges and steady progression from beginning to end.
