About

This game is a Strategic game on the Eastern Front of World War II.
It is a digital port from the famous and eponym boardgame, No retreat!, designed by Carl Paradis, which retells the story of the titanic struggle between the invading armies of Nazi Germany versus Communist Russia during WW2 at a player-friendly and manageable level of scope and difficulty. With only 70 Army/Front sized counters for the whole campaign, and with very low stacking, it’s a quick-playing yet realistic affair that favours the strategic and offensive-minded player.
The moderate complexity of the game, the light number of armies and the contained size of the map allows easier onboarding, fast play and fun experience.

In a skillfully blended collation of classic hex-based wargaming and modern card-driven simulations, No Retreat: The Russian Front stays truly story-centric, providing the proper feel of sweeping maneuvers, exploitation and encirclements across the vast steppes and forests of Russia.
With a simple-yet-innovative economic model, players will also feel the growing might and sophistication of the Russian’s Red Army, and the degradation of the once-invincible German Wehrmacht, over the epic four year sweep of time that this merciless campaign was fought.
See the Axis hordes deeply invade Russia and encircle ill-prepared Soviet units.
Watch the Red army resist and slowly acquire experience to finally push back the Germans up to Berlin !
Each turn is alight with intriguing on-board challenges plus the surprise of 55 cards hand Events as players vie to win in one of three different ways.

Reviews
As much as I'd like to, I cannot recommend this game at present.While it's based on a classic boardgame with some innovative features, the PC version is simply unfinished. The developers continue to play whack-a-mole with what are often fatal bugs, meaning every time I open this game it's like Russian roulette as to whether the game shoots itself and falls over.

Кто-то не разобрался в игре;
Кто-то — в адаптации правил;
Кто-то не готов играть «по переписке» в течение месяца;
[olist]
Hi, Cyril!
English version
The developer moved this game out of Early Access on April 20th (I’m not sure why, there’s still a mountain of work to do). I sincerely hope this date holds no symbolism, so I’m posting my review on May 9th. Initially, I planned to write it on April 30th, but [strike] things happened [/strike] I failed my initiative roll.
I really like this game.
But its digital version is something you have to love not "for", but "DESPITE". Despite the clunky UI, bugs, lags, and crashes (it's Unity, what did you expect?), and the flawed rules adaptation. The game entered Steam Early Access on June 25th
(surprised it wasn't the 22nd)
, 2025. Since then, a lot of work has been done, but most of it by the players (I'm not talking about the coding, obviously). The community has accepted the fact that bug-hunting is their job now. But failing to adapt the basic rules... It seems that in 10 months, the developer couldn't finish a 30-page rulebook with pictures and play a few sessions. The AI opponent is currently laughably broken. A couple of weeks ago, I was winning without declaring a single attack. Yesterday, I tried that "challenge" again... and it got even worse. Besides being passive, the AI has started ignoring game mechanics: having only 2 cards in hand, it somehow managed to play 22 in a single turn. Combined, these factors lead to a predictably low player count. Some couldn't figure out the game, some are frustrated by the rules adaptation, and some aren't ready for "play-by-mail" style matches that last a month. The 13-step tutorial is also a major turn-off. The developer added an AI assistant for help, but it doesn't always work (perhaps due to regional issues). I’ve encountered many players in multiplayer who have already walked away from the game for these very reasons.
It wouldn't be fair not to mention the pros.
[olist]
Matchmaking. It's easier to find opponents here than in similar games. However, the complete lack of a ranking system is a massive letdown. It’s a total Wild West out there because you can be matched with anyone. Imagine starting to learn chess and your first opponents are Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura. Or being Shaquille O'Neal playing against 5th graders. The latter is funny at first, but it kills any desire to keep playing.
Atmosphere. Using WWII portraits and photos is a great idea. But there are far too few of them. We need more!
Dynamic Map. The map background changing based on the weather is awesome. It actually made it hard for me to go back to the tabletop version because I got so used to the visual weather cues.
Fix Speed. The developer fixes bugs quite fast. BUT! First, you’ll have to prove that a rule is adapted incorrectly
Hi, Cyril!
. I’d be happy to keep helping (many fixes were based on my reports), but we’ve hit a brick wall: the dev is now referencing Carl Paradis's new final rules, which aren't public yet. This effectively ties my hands and kills the desire to play — you can't hunt for bugs without the proper reference material. [/olist] Despite the frustration with the rules, the developer's commitment to fixing bugs still gives me a glimmer of hope that the game can reach its full potential. However, with so much work left to do, the question remains: how can it be finished if even the most dedicated players are having their hands tied?
Exactly what I have been expecting: The occasion to play the Eastern front without having to lose hundred of hours into one of the monster wargames out there. Gamboard lovers like me will appreciate the "solitary" game mode. Absolutely perfect!
Discovered the game during the sale, and appreciate the job done on porting the orginal boardgame in the digital world. Well done Cyril (I own Carrier Battles and Napoleon's Eagles, both also excellent adaptations) Thanks to continue providing us with those great games.
Very good wargame about the Russian Front. The game seems simple with a low number of armies and the lightweight map. However, the rules are not that simple. I wisely started by going through tutorials before starting a serious game. AI is perfect to learn. I hope to become strong enough to challenge other players online.
The gameplay is basically good. A bit regimented in the game turn process with limited variability. Several glitches noted, mostly in the tutorials. I think this style play may work a little better at a lower operational level and not so much the strategic level, which it does do a good job of anyways. All in all once you get the mechanics, a fun game. Not sure of the the long term replay-ability - to be seen.
Gracias
This is not the type of games that I usually play, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised and I'm hooked! Really engaging & fun gameplay loop. I've played a few hours and I can't wait to play more.
