This is the sixth Yakuza I've played, and it's the worst installment so far (though it's on par with Yakuza 4, so the battle for worst is fierce). The story is okay, nothing special, but that just means it's the worst in series. The division between so many protagonists is something I detest and will never accept (Haruka's part was so weak that for the first time in a Yakuza, I found myself clicking through cutscenes and wondering how to skip her part). Plus, the combat is terrible. This installment is a return to the worst combat systems in the series. Not only are enemies endlessly blocking, but they also have a million health points. The street-fighting aspect is so absurdly high in this installment that it all adds up to facepalm-level gameplay. However, even the worst Yakuza is still a game that deserves (barely) a positive review, but only because I like the series. Below is one thing that almost made me quit this game. Near the end of the game, there's a section in the Sewers, and during that section, there's a QTE that, if you fail, you have to go back to your save. Until now, failing a QTE in this game would cause you to lose HP and that's it, but here you lose. I couldn't get past it. I tried 20+ times. I disconnected my gamepad and tried using the keyboard - nothing. I googled for tips that might help, and it said to use a pen or a spoon. I used a pen, but that didn't help. I searched for mods on the Nexus, but there wasn't one that removes QTEs. That's when I wanted to uninstall the game and give it a negative. However, I asked someone else to help me with it, and they did it on their third try, so it was only because I had someone to help me that I was able to finish the game. 5/10 - I hope Kiwami 5 fixes this game.
This review won't focus on the gameplay or story much, both because I haven't finished the game and because there's other reviews that are probably better for this. Maybe I'll edit this review with my thoughts on the game once I beat it but for now, I'll focus on major issues with this game on Linux that the SteamOS/Deck Verified badge don't disclose. There's a major issue where cutscenes play the wrong audio when using Valve's Proton set by default for this game which ruins immersion and causes you to miss out on the usual great voice acting. This can be fixed by using ProtonGE which is a fork of Proton with GloriousEggroll's (Redhat employee and maintainer of Nobara Linux) patches that include patches and video codecs that Valve can't redistribute due to licensing issues. Specifically, you'll need GE-10-34 or possibly lower since GE-11 causes crashes. When you play with the default version of Proton, cutscenes play properly for the first chapter but break once you get to Chapter 2. This is a fairly new fix, and would've been nicer to have a while ago since I had to wait so long for this game to be fixed that I ended up making a new save and abandoning my previous one because I felt lost getting back into it. Anyways, once you sort this out the game runs really well on Steam Deck. It's not a locked 60, more like a locked 55fps, but the frame rate is stable enough to not feel the lower frame rate much. Like all the Yakuza titles, these games are great to play on Deck. Read the other reviews which mention issues with the length of the game and some continuity issues, but for now I don't have much to say since I'm only a couple chapters deep. Hopefully Valve introduced a much more nuanced review system because need a Proton fork for a "Deck Verified" game to enjoy it is ridiculous when other games get labelled Playable for awkard launchers (not that I think it's a bad thing to label games like this as playable not verified, just be more consistent ane consider Linux compatibility issues too Valve).
Kinda got busy during my playthrough of this.... But it was so good! The game was a bit longer than it should've been but the characters and side stories made it so fun! It was so crazy to get to play as Haruka after all this time and the ending made me tear up a little... So excited to go back to the dragon engine in yakuza 6
