Hearts of Iron III

Real HOI
TLDR: It's the ultimate logistics simulator for hardcore strategy purists, but the interface is dated and the engine stability is terrible on modern rigs. You will need to buy "Their Finest Hour" DLC to enable CPU multicore optimizations. I would also recommend downloading the 4GB LAA patch online to let the executable use more RAM. Hearts of Iron III is a great military RTS game based in WW2. You can play as any country and build an army and alliances to try to take over the world. It's a top down game with a lot of mechanics that creates a very large learning curve. Once you learn the basics however this game is a blast to play and runs very well on older hardware unlike it's successor. This game is very complex and I don't want to sugar coat it at all. If your looking for a game to pick up and play this isn't it. This game requires you to play a few matches to start to grasp concepts and what you are doing before you understand the basics to have a good play through. You need to research different equipments as well as politically manage your country and dealing with different ideology countries that don't like you. You also need to micro manage your army as you will need them for the upcoming war. The game starts in 1936 so you get a good 3 years to build up before WW2 kicks off. This gives a lot of time to figure out what your doing and a lot of time not fighting but managing and building different things in your country. Once the war starts your doing the same managing while fighting. I don't want to scare people away from this title as it's a really good game but it is a time investment to learn and enjoy this title. Comparing to Hearts of Iron IV this game is much simpler in terms of it's mechanics which can be a good or bad thing. For example you won't be able to make a battle plan and tell your army on that line to go there automatically. In Hearts of Iron III you will need to manually do your battles yourself, which is honestly nice in some ways. Another thing I really like over Hearts of Iron IV is that I don't need to build custom templates for each tank, plane or boat I want to use. Sometimes I just want to play the game and not have to build and upgrade my vehicle templates. The performance on Hearts of Iron III is better than IV in most cases due to having less provinces (places your troops sit and move) and less complex AI mechanics to calculate. Another major difference is supply and logistics for resources is different. In Hearts of Iron III you just upgrade the overall infrastructure per province where as in Hearts of Iron IV you need to manually build and upgrade your railways to and from supply depots which gets very expensive when trying to get resources like food and water to your troops in a different continent. Overall the game is simpler and in many ways that's okay. While the performance can be better than Hearts of Iron IV in some cases I would recommend downloading the 4GB LAA patch online as late game with many units can cause this game to crash, A LOT. It would be nice if Paradox came back to patch this issue themselves or come up with a better solution but for a game nearly 20 years old I can understand why it doesn't make sense for them to do so. There are mods online for this game such as Black ICE however there is no steam workshop support sadly unlike Hearts of Iron IV so you need to manually download and install the mods you want to use.
Stupid game no longer loads up, nothing changed just doenst work anymore even after re-installing and removing all folder.
tl;dr this game doesn't work on modern systems, and is not worth buying unless you're willing to put in a lot of effort to make it run (if it's even possible). Even though Paradox should be ashamed for selling a product that doesn't work, the game itself is extremely fun albeit flawed. I actually enjoy the game itself, and have hundreds of in-game hours logged across other accounts. It's not everyone's cup of tea understandably - by default the game literally automates half the mechanics, there is a lot of emphasis around micromanaging your OOB, it's unbalanced, and extremely difficult to survive as a minor nation, frankly the representation of geopolitics isn't very good either. The biggest problem though, particularly for 'modern' (Hoi4) players is the railroading. WW2 is scripted to happen whether you like it or not. While you can do things such as invading Canada as the USA, the problem is it takes a ton of effort and the normal WW2 triggers still occur. For extra 'flavour', you get different start dates, or "scenarios". In spite of its glaring flaws, I still find it to be very charming. Despite the political mechanics being shallow at best, it is an extremely engaging, fun war game. It's a more streamlined take on a traditional WW2 strategy game, but there is a lot to enjoy, including directing your troops, what your nation produces, maintaining supply/logistics, and managing your army structure. If this game still worked, I would absolutely still be willing to have a session every once in a while. As said in the beginning though, this game is straight up broken on modern systems. It will CTD past the main menu, and the map will not load no matter what. Personally I've tried a few guides to make it compatible on Win11, but nothing worked and is just not something I can be bothered with. That being said, Paradox should absolutely still fix it at some point. If for no other reason than the fact they are still willing to charge quite a lot of money for the game + it's DLC which is absolutely essential. With all that being said, I take no pleasure giving this a thumbs down, because this game is truly a diamond in the rough.
I simply cannot recommend ANY Paradox game. with their current business model of screwing the player while trying to milk as much money as possible.
Gritem, soldados! Ofereçam seus corações!
