Developed by SOFTSTAR ENTERTAINMENT and DOMO Studio and published by CubeGame together with SOFTSTAR ENTERTAINMENT, Xuan-Yuan Sword: The Clouds Faraway is a classic Chinese role-playing game that blends historical fiction with mythology, delivering an expansive adventure rooted in the Three Kingdoms era. The Steam edition serves as the definitive release by bundling the original campaign with the story expansions The Wuzhang Plains: Muyun, The Wuzhang Plains: Zhaoyun, and Lanyin, giving players access to the complete narrative experience. While the removal of the original dungeon mode may disappoint some returning fans, the additional story content more than compensates by enriching the overall journey. The game's biggest drawback for international audiences is its lack of English language support, as it officially includes only Simplified and Traditional Chinese. The story follows Xu Muyun, a talented young swordsman who grows up alongside his close companions Lanyin and Zhang Gao in the city of Luoyang. What begins as an ambition to become skilled warriors serving the Kingdom of Wei gradually transforms into an emotionally charged adventure filled with political intrigue, supernatural mysteries, and personal sacrifice. The narrative carefully intertwines fictional heroes with real historical figures and events, allowing players to witness famous moments from the Three Kingdoms period while experiencing an original tale that explores loyalty, friendship, destiny, and the painful consequences of war. The writing unfolds at a measured pace, allowing relationships and conflicts to develop naturally before reaching emotionally satisfying conclusions. One of the game's greatest strengths is its emphasis on character development. Every major party member receives meaningful attention throughout the adventure, with their motivations, struggles, and personal growth becoming just as important as the larger conflict surrounding them. The included expansion chapters greatly enhance this aspect by revisiting key events from different perspectives and expanding upon the fates of several important characters. Rather than feeling like optional side stories, these additional campaigns complete the emotional arc of the entire adventure, making the Steam version the ideal way to experience the game. Gameplay embraces traditional RPG mechanics that were popular during the era of its original release. Players spend their time exploring towns, interacting with NPCs, progressing through story-driven dungeons, solving environmental puzzles, strengthening equipment, and engaging in turn-based battles that reward tactical thinking. Combat encourages players to make effective use of each character's unique abilities while considering enemy strengths and weaknesses. Although some systems feel dated compared to modern role-playing games, they remain enjoyable thanks to their strategic depth and their seamless integration with the game's narrative progression. The presentation continues to hold up remarkably well because of its strong artistic direction. Character portraits are expressive, environments are richly detailed, and the visual design successfully combines historical architecture with mystical fantasy elements. Magical effects and cinematic sequences add excitement to important battles without overshadowing the grounded atmosphere created by the historical setting. Complementing the visuals is an excellent musical score that blends orchestral arrangements with traditional Chinese influences, creating memorable themes that enhance both emotional scenes and large-scale military conflicts. The Three Kingdoms backdrop is more than a simple setting, serving instead as the foundation of the entire adventure. Historical battles, legendary generals, political rivalries, and authentic cultural influences are seamlessly woven into the fantasy narrative. The supernatural elements never completely replace the historical context, resulting in a world that feels believable despite its magical creatures and ancient artifacts. This careful balance allows the game to appeal to both fans of Chinese history and players who simply enjoy rich fantasy storytelling. Despite its many strengths, the game's accessibility remains its most significant weakness. Since dialogue and storytelling are central to the experience, the absence of English localization prevents many players from appreciating its carefully written plot and nuanced characters. Those who are able to read Chinese, however, will discover one of the finest entries in the long-running Xuan-Yuan Sword series, especially with all of the major story expansions included in a single package. Xuan-Yuan Sword: The Clouds Faraway succeeds by delivering a memorable blend of historical drama, fantasy adventure, strategic combat, and heartfelt storytelling. Its engaging cast, detailed world-building, attractive art direction, and emotionally rewarding narrative make it a standout classic among Chinese role-playing games. Although certain gameplay systems reflect the title's age and the lack of multilingual support limits its reach, the complete Steam edition remains an outstanding experience for its intended audience. Rating: 7/10
