Developed by DOMO Studio and SOFTSTAR ENTERTAINMENT and published by CubeGame and Gamirror Games, Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains is a remastered edition of one of the most iconic entries in the long-running Chinese RPG franchise. While many role-playing games rely on entirely fictional worlds, this adventure takes a far more distinctive approach by combining authentic historical events with mythology, religion, and fantasy. The result is a journey that crosses continents, introducing players to a rich tapestry of cultures while preserving the strategic gameplay and narrative depth that made the original release so highly regarded. The story follows Septem, a Frankish knight serving under King Pepin III, who is tasked with searching for the legendary Invincible Arts of War. His mission quickly evolves into a much greater quest that carries him across Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and finally into the heart of Tang Dynasty China. Throughout his travels, he encounters historical figures, witnesses pivotal conflicts, and becomes involved in a supernatural struggle that threatens the fate of multiple civilizations. The narrative successfully intertwines real history with fantasy, allowing historical battles, political intrigue, and ancient legends to coexist naturally. This unusual blend gives the game an identity unlike most traditional fantasy RPGs and keeps the storyline engaging from beginning to end. One of the game's greatest accomplishments is its impressive world-building. Each region visited feels culturally distinct, with its own architecture, customs, beliefs, and atmosphere. Rather than presenting historical locations as simple backdrops, the game treats them as living environments that influence both the narrative and the characters. Traveling between Western kingdoms, Arabian territories, and imperial China creates a constant sense of discovery, while the attention given to historical detail adds credibility to the fantasy elements. Players interested in history will appreciate how genuine events are woven into the larger fictional plot without overshadowing the adventure itself. Combat follows a classic turn-based structure that emphasizes planning instead of fast reflexes. Battles encourage players to study enemy strengths, manage resources efficiently, and build a balanced party capable of adapting to different situations. Character progression steadily introduces stronger abilities and equipment, rewarding exploration and experimentation throughout the campaign. Although the mechanics clearly reflect the game's classic origins, they remain enjoyable thanks to their straightforward design and satisfying tactical depth. The Spirit Fusion Pot remains one of the game's defining features and continues to stand out even by modern standards. Defeated monsters can be captured and fused with various items to create stronger creatures, equipment, and other valuable resources. The inclusion of separate Eastern and Western altars expands the crafting possibilities, encouraging experimentation with different combinations to uncover unique results. This system adds an enjoyable layer of customization while making exploration and combat feel consistently rewarding. Visually, the remastered edition respects the artistic style of the original release while enhancing its presentation for modern hardware. The hand-painted environments, detailed character portraits, and traditional Chinese artistic influences create a timeless appearance that remains attractive despite the game's age. Improved textures, higher-resolution graphics, and a refined interface modernize the experience without sacrificing the charm that longtime fans appreciate. Controller support and additional quality-of-life improvements also make the game far more accessible to newcomers. The soundtrack complements the game's globe-spanning adventure with an excellent blend of orchestral compositions and traditional Eastern musical influences. Each region is accompanied by melodies that reinforce its unique atmosphere, while quieter pieces help emphasize emotional story moments. Combined with the game's visual presentation, the music strengthens the feeling of traveling across diverse civilizations connected through a single epic narrative. Despite its many strengths, some aspects of the experience reveal its origins as a classic RPG. Dialogue sequences can be lengthy, dungeon exploration occasionally becomes repetitive, and certain mechanics lack the convenience features found in more modern role-playing games. Players accustomed to contemporary RPG design may find the pacing slower than expected. However, those who appreciate story-driven adventures and traditional gameplay systems will likely see these elements as part of the game's enduring appeal rather than significant drawbacks. This updated version also includes additional story content that was previously unavailable outside the mobile release, making it the most complete edition of the game. Combined with its visual enhancements and interface improvements, it offers an excellent opportunity for both returning fans and newcomers to experience one of the most influential titles in Chinese RPG history. Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains succeeds because it offers far more than a standard fantasy adventure. Its ambitious narrative, memorable historical setting, engaging tactical combat, innovative Spirit Fusion Pot system, and beautifully preserved artistic direction come together to create a role-playing experience that feels both educational and imaginative. Although some older design choices remain intact, they do little to diminish a journey that stands out through its originality and cultural richness. Rating: 8/10
