Reviews
I love the idea of combining Balatro's gameplay with other genres, but I'll echo some of the other negative reviews in saying that Word Play has a bunch of severe design flaws which make that combination not particularly fruitful. Including weak jokers, a rather sterile presentation, and most fundamentally, placing far too much of the difficulty in the player's ability to form long words. On higher difficulty levels my gameplay experience eventually turned into typing the letter tiles from my game board into word search websites to find the longest words I could spell with those, and at that point I figured the design was fundamentally untenable. Recommended only if you're a native speaker, have a ridiculously broad vocabulary, and want mostly Boggle with only a dash of Balatro. For us mortals, however, I recommend Cursed Words: The Word Game That Isn't instead: a game with pretty much the same premise as Word Play, except that it fixes pretty much every design flaw in the latter game: e.g. you have no letter bag but instead a mechanic which ensures that some special tiles are always in play; jokers are way more powerful and run-defining; there are lots of ways to get wildcards into your game to reduce the need for a huge vocabulary; and so on.

You can't really fix your deck like most deckbuilders, and the refresh/redraw system is too limited to use it to spell long words or make sure your words trigger your modifiers. It's like Balatro but if you could only play straights and have to throw out your entire hand to redraw.
Seemingly early access game, but dev has stopped all work on it. Unfortunate, since it has potential. This is NOT similar to Balatro. While in Balatro the sky is the limit, the limit in this game is the top of a tree, if you're increadibly lucky (I mean 1 in a milliion odds), the limit is a mountain. The modifiers feel 'nerfed', so do the upgrades. And the worst part of the game is you cant just keep stacking the upgrades and go crazy. There is literally no reason for this limitation. Absolutely none. Its a PvE game, and its so boring with 5 modifiers and 3 upgrades.
extreme lack of variety in playthroughs. It starts off seeming as if it will be a game that opens up, but there are no real challenges to strive for other than just max a high score as unlocks and other variations of how a game plays out is non existent. I would just play boggle since it is at least more challenging
It's well made and decent fun. It probably won't have me coming back for a hundred hours like other roguelikes, but it's a fun time for a couple hours.
Needs updates. It's a neat game to play for a few hours, but it really doesn't have much staying power. I can't hate the game, but I really wish it was properly fleshed out, rather than the relatively barebones feel it has now.
I am pushing 50, so maybe this kind of game and my addiction to it actually shows that I am the gaming equivalent to a retiree. I used to 1CC Thunderforce V and Rockman X but now I play word games while drinking tea. You know what? I wouldn't have it any other way. This game is fun, it keeps the brain running, and I gladly paid money for it, and gifted it to one of my private language students, a person in their 20's, whom I see has already played like 4 hours of it. I am a trilingual language-social sciences professor, and have been for like two decades, and sometimes this game beats me anyway, though I have sent back some real words that its dictionary does not seem to have. This is the type of game my 90 year old mother would enjoy on her mobile, but also the type of thing I would prescribe to high schoolers learning ESL. Maybe port it to the Megadrive or Saturn., for twice the pleasure.
I like the concept, it just plays out a bit boring. Instead of looking like an early mobile game I wish the animations were more impactful and stimulating. I find myself not caring about a next run or if I finish a round at all. Worse than just being boring, the game actively frustrated me. The dictionary is very limited, words like "inhabitance" are not registered as words. I understand that you have the option to petition for words to be added, but the game isn't in early access and there are tons of free resources to get access to all of english words (and their forms) online. The wildcard function also frequently does not work well at all. Almost every time I attempted to use a wildcard tile, the word would not register, even if I was able to make that same word with standard tiles. I would not purchase this unless it is 80% or more off.
Great game with really polished presentation and mechanics. I suspect a lot of the negative reviews are evaluating the powers incorrectly and declaring the game broken as a result. I beat ultramarathon on my first try with a 7 letter word scoring 1800 points, and I'm an average Balatro/Slay the Spire player at best. You do have to enjoy spelling words to get the most out of this game, but that's not surprising. You don't need to be a walking dictionary.
I find it really hard to build towards a specific synergy. It feels like there are too many perks making it hard to get the ones you want and too many letters making it hard to get a significant proportion of them upgraded. It all adds up to most runs feeling the same, with the occasional rare run where the stars align and you actually get a coherent build.
