EDIT: Recent updates have potentially addressed my major complaints, but I haven't played enough yet to re-review. ---- Fun, but excessively grindy (as far as roguelites go). You can earn gems during runs, which you can then use to get permanent unlocks or upgrades. Cool, that's pretty standard. However... I've played for almost 2 hours and only earned enough gems to unlock 1 additional letter in my hand. At the rate the game dishes out gems (and how quickly it scales up), I'd probably have to play 4-5 more hours in order to unlock even one additional letter. That's just... incredibly stingy, and it makes the game extremely grindy compared to other roguelites, where you often unlock something at least every few runs. And if you look at the screenshots on the Steam page, it's expected you'll acquire hundreds of gems over time. Yikes. Other than that, the game is pretty neat. It's sorta like a Roguelite version of the card game Hardback, though Hardback has way more interesting and varied letter "powers" available. My only real complaint besides the grindiniess is that the controls are a little odd. While this is a typing game, you still have to use the mouse, which feels a little clunky. It makes it so it's not 100% comfortable with keyboard only or mouse only. Anyhow, this is all fixable. If Steam had 'neutral' as an option, I'd leave neutral instead of a thumbs down. But Steam doesn't have that, and due to the grindiness, the novelty of the game started to wear on me pretty quickly. I say that as someone who has hundreds of hours in other roguelites (deckbuilders, FPS, etc).
This is a fun and challenging word game. Paying attention to the strategy of the cards and bonuses is just as important as making the longest words. You'll probably find it too hard if you're not taking advantage of all the available tools. Definitely recommended for the price.
Solid game so far. Can be a bit challenging in the beginning, but there is a lot of variety and different options for gameplay.
Rogue-like Scrabble. If you love word games, you'll love this. I've been searching for a word game that isn't just a variation of boggle or crosswords. This is it. This game takes my favorite genre, (rogue-likes / lites) and combined it with my favorite obsession, word games. It's fantastic. It's still early in development, the UI has it's quirks, and for me there was a bit of a learning curve when it came to all the tile types. But despite that, this game scratches the same itch for me that Balatro does. Worth the money if you're tired of the same style of word games and are looking for an actual fresh idea..
A pretty ok game from what I've played so far. Making words is always going to be fun and the idea of a balatro-type roguelike structure mixed in is a good one. I think I'm pretty average when it comes to word knowledge (more from reading than games like scrabble) but the difficulty of the game feels harsh. Combined with the pittance of gems you get from completing levels I find it hard to want to play another game. I know this game would be much smoother for me if I had scrabble brain but modifiers you get from the shop lack the synergy potential when the reroll cost is so high. Everything feels so expensive. I try to economize and save for the interest and its gone in an instant. Between buying new tiles, leveling up word length, and items makes it hard to feel good about committing to a strategy when you never know if you can really lean into it through purchases in the future. Why commit to small word length when all my tiles are basic and removing AND upgrading them is offered at random? Why are gems even offered between levels? Why make the player decide between the meta progression and improving their current deck in the middle of a run? The meta progression doesn't even feel like upgrades to me. The extra letter and card slots make the game more fun (or easier, I guess) and the stuff for like sale price seems tacked on. I don't like the idea that the economy balance is based around meta upgrades. Overall the low prices makes the game easy to recommend but the nuts and bolts of the balance prevents me from really enjoying it.
PT-BR/ EN PT-BR
Balatro das palavras? Quero!🧠🎮
EN
This game is like Scrabble on adrenaline!
You build words using cards, face off against bosses with wild penalties (like “no points for vowels”), and upgrade both your letters and your words. It’s strategy, luck, and creativity all rolled into one! Letterlike totally hooked me; every round feels like a new puzzle, and when I manage to fill all the slots perfectly... it’s pure satisfaction, haha! But here’s the catch: it’s only available in English! 😩 As a Brazilian player, I’m leaving my heartfelt request: please add a Brazilian Portuguese translation! 🇧🇷 The gaming community here would absolutely love this game — let’s make some noise and get it noticed! Big props to the dev! It’s a creative, addictive game with serious potential to become a hit among word nerds. I’m already obsessed and not ashamed to admit it!
I am a walking skill issues but I'm still enjoying it. I finally got to level 5 in the first difficulty but got wiped on level 2 of it. It's a fun challenge and I will continue to try everyday until I beat it. I recommend it if you're into word games.
Really enjoyed the mobile version and was waiting for it to come to PC. If you like word games with a combination of the Roguelike game mechanics, this game is perfect for you! I can't recommend this game enough!
This is an excellent word game on many levels. It flows and is paced well, and has an extremely clean and pleasant UI. The item management and metaprogression adds something new to the field. I can see myself returning to this often as it is the most compelling word game I've seen in years. I'm loving it so far. Highly recommended. (* I learned of the game in a Reddit thread where the developer introduced the game and was offering a few codes for folks to try it out - and I thought it looked interesting. Although I received a code, I was not even asked to leave a review so the above was simply motivated by my positive experience trying it out.)
Been addicted to the mobile version and had to pick it up here! If you like roguelites and word games, this is straight up your alley! It does it well too!
