About
Featuring the GRAMMY® Award-winning score by Winifred Phillips!
Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is a full 3D remake of the first game in the legendary Wizardry series of RPGs.
The first party-based RPG video game ever released, Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord was a direct inspiration to series like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Digital Eclipse's revival preserves the appeal of the classic, with many upgrades for modern role-playing game fans.
Dungeon Crawling, Deluxe
Craft your own party of adventurers and head into the labyrinth at the behest of the mad overlord Trebor, in search of the amulet stolen by the evil wizard Werdna. Battle groups of challenging enemies, avoid hidden traps, and make your way deeper into the dungeon as you prepare for the ultimate battle: Facing Werdna himself.
Commitment to Accuracy
Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is built directly on top of the original 1981 game's code. Although it looks all new, underneath the hood is the authentic game. You can even view the original Apple II interface as you play.
Challenge Without Hassle
While the well-known difficulty of the enemies has not been altered, quality-of-life improvements have been added in every area. Party management, navigation, spellcasting, and combat have all been significantly enhanced.
A Legend Reborn
If you're just discovering the legendary Wizardry franchise, Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is the perfect jumping-in point for new players. Series veterans will love the gorgeous new graphics and sound, and the streamlined interface.

I have yet to experience any of these bugs thank God and i'm really enjoying this revisit of a game from my youth, i love seeing the original screen in the bottom right, kinda like how they used the original for the mini map in the secret of mana remake, i only wish you could switch to the original completely back and forth and i had the dos version i miss the simple nastalgic cga df my youth in the early 80s, on second thought, i quit, screw this game, im not a masochist, level 8 so i go to floor 3 to grind tougher enemies and i lost my hard fought characters to floor traps
i didnt grow up playing this so its way to hard for me
Dont play this game if you are not 400 years old, this game is dookie. 😊
Played this on an Apple II back in the day. First video game I played to the end. Still holds the charm of the original, just updated to run on modern hardware.
This is old school, the fresh coat of paint is very nice, but it's not as hard or buggy as some people make it out to be. Dying has a higher cost, and you don't have as many resources to get yourself out of a bad situation. Take that challenge away by playing a little more cautiously than modern RPGs demand and it's really no harder than any other RPG. It's very cool looking back and seeing how influential this game was, like how the naming conventions of all the magic spells influenced the Shin Megami Tensei franchise and such.
Game is hardlocked to 60 fps. Have fun running it on a high refresh rate screen. Surprisingly controls are awful. Even worse than playing the original. "Z" and "Y" are switched on german keyboards and you cant rebind them. Volume mixing is way off, music is too loud, sound effects too low by default. Graphics are blurry and there are almost no graphics options. Keyboard controls make you push left "shift", "Z" and "Enter" a lot. Sometimes clicking on things does something, sometimes you have to press "Shift" to select something. Inspecting your characters while in the town screen is impossible for some reason. Interface looks confusing and convoluted at times. To be honest, i think the original apple2 version controls better, faster and has a clearer interface. Thats saying something... My first impressions are honestly... bad... Right now im tempted to go back to way cheaper looking games like "Wizardry: The five Ordeals". Atleast that game plays well, while this one feels like im fighting the titular dragon to control it while chugging at a fixed 60fps. Ugh.
I'm hooked ! this game and zork were my go to games when i was young.. I love how they upgraded it. its tough at the start and you need to memorize your map but fun as hell. :) ok so now ive been playing for a few weeks and all my characters are level 12. I learned the secret to jump to level 4 in just a few moments. I love this game except for one problem..... so far there is only one spell that teleports you back to town but it leaves all your gear in place ;(...
I solved it. Nothing to do once you solve it so I kept playing anyway. Perfect remake.
懐かしいとてもたのしくて難易度もちょうどいいと思います。
