Witchcrafty is a 2d medroidvania / 2d plateform, control a little witch and explore each stages for powerup before a boss battle. Graphics (7 / 10) : The graphics are pretty nice and each stage have his own design. Gameplay (5 / 10) : A 2d metrovania with a base correct gameplay (double jump, attack, spells, dash), with a nice level design, but too much minor problem that made together the game too hard to play : - Minor input lag during gameplay. - Big lack of save point in the game. - You only have 4 hp on the begginning, and all first melee monster and first boss does 2 hp of damages, and kill you in 2 hits …, so way too easy to die. - Big lack of explanations for boss battles .. All these problem made the game way to hard and no fun to play, also there no difficulty selection in the game ... Price (6 / 10) : Game cost 8 euros, and take around 3-6 hours for main complexion, ok price for the current content, but not sure you will complete it because of difficulty ... Story/Music/Optimization (6 / 10) : Some minor cinematics between main gameplay, no voice and all text in english. The music is good, but some sound are pretty mediocre ... No problem with optimization, run well without any freeze (played on a i5, 2Go VRAM and 8Go RAM). Final Note (6 / 10) : Witchcrafty is a 2d metroidvania, with nice graphics but too much gameplay problem that made the game too hard to play and too annoying in the long run ... + : - Nice graphics and each stage have his own design. - Base nice level design. - : - Really to hard difficulty (enemy can kill you in 2 hits, lack of save points …) - Lack of some explanations in the game (boss battles / health system in the game ...) - Some input lag.
Witchcrafty is the perfect example of a game that has so much potential, but falls flat in nearly every aspect. Let's start with the positives. The music is absolutely awesome. Every stage has an awesome musical accompaniment that reminds me of GBA games. This game also uses my favourite GBA aesthetic with its graphics. It's truly gorgeous to look at and evokes feelings of nostalgia. That's about where the positives end, though. Nearly every aspect of this game was extremely difficult to push through. First and foremost, while I love the graphics, this game definitely feels like it should be a low-stakes cozy game. I was really surprised and disappointed to find out that this game is actually quite difficult, especially compared to the games I usually play. There's also no difficulty setting in this game, so if it's too hard, you're out of luck. Because this game is a Metroidvania, whenever you die, you go back to the last save point. You don't get to retain any of the gems you collect; it's like you literally go back to your previous save. It's frustrating because you can spend all this time collecting every gem and killing every enemy, only to die on the way back to the save point, and you have to do it all over again. It's even worse when the game doesn't register your movement and you die because of it (this happened more than once). I wouldn't mind this feature if the save rooms were spread more sporadically throughout the levels. There are very few save points in the game, which makes every screen more intimidating to get through. Furthermore, enemies come back after you return to the screen. So you can't just kill all the enemies and hope for a safer run. Also, some of these enemies have really cheap moves, like the fire and ice mages. I ended up learning their patterns, but taking damage was almost inescapable. There are boss fights in this game that look cool, but they just feel really cheap. I essentially had to cheese the Twin Mage boss fight, which I still don't even know was the intended way to beat them. I get that final bosses should be difficult, but this one was almost unfairly difficult. I really wanted to love this game a lot. But I just encountered way too many bugs to say that this was a polished experience. And some of those bugs cost me precious time since they killed me, and I had to restart my progress. If there's one thing I hate in video games, it's losing a bunch of your progress. It's the reason why I love low-stakes games. Witchcrafty is not one of those games. I know this game goes on sale, but I would say skip it. I do believe we need to support more indie developers, but not when they're released in such a buggy state and never optimized.
This game has catchy music and absolutely GORGEOUS art, but that's not enough to save it I'm afraid. The movement and platforming is horribly buggy, with the protagonist often phasing through walls or getting stuck in the ground in the middle of tense battles, leading to unfair and unpredictable deaths. The story is confusing and dialogue is full of strange phrases or incorrect grammar. There are other minor issues here and there but they really start to pile up and make for a bad experience. I'd list them all but I've honestly lost track and forgotten most of them since I finished this game. I was too frustrated to make the review until now. There's clear potential here for a good game, and the characters were pretty memorable (except for their names, can't remember any of them) however, but this really should have spent some more time in the oven.
Casual hitboxes, repetition of boring and annoying enemies that hit you just because you're bored of the repetition (at best they change skins or they add basic slimes after the first two chapters) or because the protagonist refuse to attack normally at random or because of both, there are also a lot of cheap hits in the moment you enter a room, casual input lags while jumping or trying to jump and also dull and boring upgrades that feel weightless since the problems from before also include the casual enemies that does 2 damages (that because of their repetition and boring mechanics doesn't make them difficult just more annoying). You can't even have that much fun with your magic. So no, even without those technical problems it wouldn't be good as a Metroidvania, even for a discount. After all even vibrant colours becomes meh after being associated with something boring and annoying, I mean there could be some repetition but those elements must be placed in an interesting way and with interesting pattern/mechanics, so they can be always seen as a challenge and/or fun, but that's not the case unfortunately
The aesthetics are great, the platforming aspects are okay. Cons: Keyboard controls are not good, using the shift key for dash is quite annoying. Seems like you can´t change them, you can control movement using WASD or Regular up/down/left/right. But having a string of buttons you need in the bottom left corner of the keyboard means that you really can´t use wasd. Using Z,X,C,V for controls is a weird choice, it´s an unnatural place to have your hand. There is so many buttons available on the keyboard and you picked those and a shift key? I thought my cheap keyboard was causing issues, but seeing the other reviews having similar issues with inputs being eaten, the character freezing in place and stuff like that i can only guess it´s not a super uncommon issues. Enemies keep getting stronger but you don´t really feel like you get much stronger at any point. I have been through 3 worlds at this point, i have 1 extra heart and 1 extra magic charge. Which do nothing when some enemies do what seems to be fixed damage. Ghosts always make me go from 5 hearts to 1. So i´m guessing if you have 4 hearts as max it would still leave you with 1 heart. The game is repetitive, all maps look the same and function the same. You collect meaningless crystals that seem to only have one use buy upgrades but as already stated the upgrades don´t do much at all. the bosses kill you in 1-3 hits. It feels like you are doing something completely wrong. I retraced my steps through the entire first map multiple times to try and find a power up or some clue to make the boss easier. Turns out it´s just luck and memorizing patterns. All the bosses have this problem.... Tried to be smart and use fire on the ice boss. Does nothing, you just gotta whack it until it dies. So if you want a short game with decent aesthetics that feel oddly hard, that you only want to play with a controller. Maybe get this one? Just me guessing the controller has better button-mapping.
