Shantae: Risky's Revenge is a mediocre game, failing in many of the things it sets out to do. The game tries to reinvent the Metroidvania wheel with a poor layering system (where you can go to the "background" of the area and vice-versa) and a confusing map that attempts to follow the same logic. Furthermore, the maps of the interior areas are completely nonexistent, leaving you in the dark to explore these areas in a labyrinthine scheme, without a real sense of reward even after completing the area (like a map), forcing you to memorize the same tedious paths that you will need to traverse over and over again. The level design is terrible. I felt that the game areas themselves were also very empty. The enemies are positioned in bad places, with totally unfair and broken hitboxes. There is little enemy variety, and the bosses are too easy and lack any charisma. The platforming sections are also quite bad, with several blind spots where, if you fall into a hole, in addition to losing HP, you'll return to the beginning of the area, which isn't difficult to do due to the monkey's movement ability. The fact that the "old man who saves" doesn't restore HP and doesn't have fast travel (common features in Metroidvanias) often makes the game frustrating because you have to move around gigantic screens with nothing interesting just to save your progress. The fast travel in this game also bothers me a lot. They're usually located in completely opposite points from where you need to go, and there's ALWAYS an area in between to get in your way. Want to go to the city? You'll have to go through a huge area before it. There's no fast travel directly to the main city or even to the adjacent one. I recognize that there might be limitations due to it being a game originally for the Nintendo DS, such as the hitbox problems with enemies, but the horrible level design with poorly positioned enemies, along with the awful layering system and the game map, left much to be desired. The feeling I got was of playing an open-world game that is totally empty and soulless, only in 2D. If you push yourself a bit, you can still get some lighthearted fun out of it, but if you're aiming for 100% of the achievements, you'll need to play the same game at least twice to get the game's four "different" endings (which just show a different random piece of art for each ending), which is quite frustrating. Especially since sometimes some achievements won't be unlocked due to the various bugs the game has.
𝔸 𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕪 𝕘𝕖𝕞 𝕨𝕚𝕥𝕙 𝕒 𝕓𝕚𝕘 𝕡𝕖𝕣𝕤𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕝𝕚𝕥𝕪
Hop on your boat and prepare your pirate hat, because this is about to get... magical. Enter Shantae: Risky's Revenge, an underrated gem from the 3DS era where you play as a genie called Shantae who is tasked with saving Scuttle Town from the evil pirate Risky Boots. After a series of events, the genie Shantae is sent on her way to collect three soul shards to be able to end Risky's reign and recover a stolen artifact: a lamp. Don't ask me how it makes sense, it does not. What DOES make sense, however, are the smooth movements, the platforming, the unique powers Shantae has up her sleeve, and how her unique attack is to whip enemies up using her hair, it kinda reminds me of one very classic NES game that I've recently played, but I'll not go into that. Of course, since Risky's Revenge is a run-of-the-mill platformer, you'd get new powers later in the game and have to backtrack to be able to collect, well, collectibles among other things. Shantae can eventually transform into an elephant, a monkey and a mermaid, each unique in their own way and each open up new areas to explore and new collectibles to discover. The bosses are very lackluster though, and that's the thing about Shantae: Risky's Revenge, every boss has got like a gimmick that is very easy to adapt to and overcome. Moreover, when you beat the game, a new "TRUE GENIE" mode unlocks where Shantae is now wearing rags, very canon for a female genie if I do say so myself; this game mode also unlocks most of her magic from the getgo so you're not spending a dozen hours just trying to find the magics and go straight for those speed running trophies. All in all, Shantae: Risky's Revenge get 9/10; its only drawback is how easy it was, even the parts that were supposed to be difficult were really a walk in the park.
Cute, sexy, funny and fun to play. Relatively short and cheap, and the first game in the series available on Steam, it's a good place to start. I enjoyed the platforming and transformations, as well as the art and comedy. It definitely convinced me to check out more of the series.
Eh, I mean it's not bad but it's also not good. Not a fan of the layered levels but also the level design is pretty meh. Hitboxes are a suggestion in this game. Some levels feel empty, almost no enemies and other levels got the worst enemy placement. I like most games I've played from Wayforward but this is not their finest work. Play Pirates Curse and/or Seven Sirens instead for a good Shantae experience. And if you already played these games and you're wondering if you'd miss out if you didn't play RR, no not really.
The first time I was introduced to the Shantae franchise was through a boss rush gameplay video of *Shantae: Half-Genie Hero* that I watched on YouTube a few years ago. At first, I was a little hesitant to buy it, but I ended up giving the franchise a chance—and it was worth it. *Shantae: Risky’s Revenge* is the second game in the Shantae franchise. Developed by WayForward Technologies (the same team behind *Duck Tales - Remastered*, *Mighty Switch Force*, *Spidersaurs*, and *River City Girls*) for the Nintendo DSi in 2010, it was later released for iOS in 2011 and then for PC in 2014 as *Shantae: Risky’s Revenge - Director’s Cut, which contains some differences from the original, such as: 1) Magic Mode: Unlocked after beating the game for the first time. Although magic consumption is cut in half, damage is doubled, so the player must be more careful, especially at the beginning of the game. 2) Teleport: There are no teleports in the original game, so the player must repeat certain paths more than once to progress. With the teleport, it’s possible to proceed through the game more quickly, especially in speedrun challenges, where there are achievements for such runs. The game is well-crafted, and the soundtrack fits the game’s atmosphere perfectly. Although the selection of creatures is smaller compared to the first game, the design and challenges are well-balanced. One aspect I found particularly interesting is facing the “evil version” of Shantae as the final boss—she “reappears” as the final boss in the “Friends to the End” mode in *Shantae: Half Genie Hero*. As for the game’s price, it offers great value for the money, since in addition to having two game modes, there are several challenges you can tackle, such as beating the game in under 2 hours or collecting everything and finishing in under 4 hours, among others. Although it doesn’t offer as many hours of gameplay compared to other titles in the franchise, every minute played was worth it.
Quick and fun metroidvania. Simple plot. Great pixel art. 9/10
First time ever playing any of the Shantae games and i can say I really love this game i went and bought the rest of them I can't wait to play the others and of course finish this game
A cool oriental-themed platformer with a gorgeous heroine in the title role. Pixel art, good plot, great music, all this will last for several evenings. Sometimes it's not clear where to go, but then, having figured it out, the game runs on the same wavelength.
