After playing this for quite sometime these are the issues i faced: - lacks a lot of control and coordination - the character lags a lot - the health restoration plant is weirdly and randomly placed throughout the game - disappear of the character? (had to close and reopen the game multiple times esp after dying) - non-responsive start panel or settings panel The game is overpriced compared to these issues.
Witchcrafty is a very barebones platformer with light Metroidvania elements that is rough around the edges but has some charm. Pros: +Art direction is generally fantastic. +Character animations are a surprising highlight. +Music is solid. +Character movement is pretty nice, when it works... Cons: -I've been playing a number of PigeonDev games due to a bundle of their titles being on sale. Something that is present here and in most of their games is bad input detection. This game would eat inputs, freeze my character in place even while mashing buttons. It's actually not as big of an issue in this game because it's not a precision platformer like the Awesome Pea games, but I've died to it a lot. -The maps are uninspired. Once you've gotten the few collectibles there isn't much reason to really explore the rest of the map deeply, just becomes a series of enemies to roll through. -The map is broken up into single screen rooms. While a limitation on design, many games use this style to good effect. The issue here is you aren't sure where you will pop-up in the next room. If you exit a room through the floor on the left side of the room, you may come out of the ceiling on the right side of the next room. It can be disorienting trying to find your character when they show up at a place you did not expect. -Save point locations can be unfair. Some are just a few rooms away from eachother, some are long trips through large parts of the map. It wouldn't be too bad except when you die in this game, you lose all progress since your last save, including item pickups and exploration, so it's a lot of repetitive back-tracking. Meh: =Game is very short for the asking price. I finished it 100% in 3 hours. =The translation is not very good so parts of the story take some imagination to fill in. =It would be nice if save points restored your health. =The map gets confused. There are warp points in some maps are marked with a ? icon, sometimes with the save icon instead, sometimes the icon is just gone. Some consistency would be nice. =The splash art for the main menu is horrifying and does not fit the aesthetic of the rest of the game. Overall, Witchcrafty is a fine game if you get it on a substantial discount. Don't expect it to scratch a strong Metroidvania itch, but there's charm and a challenge here if you can overlook the rough spots.

its not just difficult, the running back to a save is not fun when you are worried you will lose all your progress. I've played Hollow night and it wasn't this unfair.
Witchcrafty is a very good platform game with some hard levels, nice graphics and a very good soundtrack. This game is cute!!! I recommend it.
Witchcrafty is the perfect example of a game that has so much potential, but falls flat in nearly every aspect. Let's start with the positives. The music is absolutely awesome. Every stage has an awesome musical accompaniment that reminds me of GBA games. This game also uses my favourite GBA aesthetic with its graphics. It's truly gorgeous to look at and evokes feelings of nostalgia. That's about where the positives end, though. Nearly every aspect of this game was extremely difficult to push through. First and foremost, while I love the graphics, this game definitely feels like it should be a low-stakes cozy game. I was really surprised and disappointed to find out that this game is actually quite difficult, especially compared to the games I usually play. There's also no difficulty setting in this game, so if it's too hard, you're out of luck. Because this game is a Metroidvania, whenever you die, you go back to the last save point. You don't get to retain any of the gems you collect; it's like you literally go back to your previous save. It's frustrating because you can spend all this time collecting every gem and killing every enemy, only to die on the way back to the save point, and you have to do it all over again. It's even worse when the game doesn't register your movement and you die because of it (this happened more than once). I wouldn't mind this feature if the save rooms were spread more sporadically throughout the levels. There are very few save points in the game, which makes every screen more intimidating to get through. Furthermore, enemies come back after you return to the screen. So you can't just kill all the enemies and hope for a safer run. Also, some of these enemies have really cheap moves, like the fire and ice mages. I ended up learning their patterns, but taking damage was almost inescapable. There are boss fights in this game that look cool, but they just feel really cheap. I essentially had to cheese the Twin Mage boss fight, which I still don't even know was the intended way to beat them. I get that final bosses should be difficult, but this one was almost unfairly difficult. I really wanted to love this game a lot. But I just encountered way too many bugs to say that this was a polished experience. And some of those bugs cost me precious time since they killed me, and I had to restart my progress. If there's one thing I hate in video games, it's losing a bunch of your progress. It's the reason why I love low-stakes games. Witchcrafty is not one of those games. I know this game goes on sale, but I would say skip it. I do believe we need to support more indie developers, but not when they're released in such a buggy state and never optimized.
I want to be constructive and kind in reviews, even for bad games. I've disliked games and still recommended them because they'll be good for someone out there. But honestly this is just a terrible game. Genuinely, do not buy this. It goes on sale for like a dollar. Still a dollar too expensive. It could be free and it's still not worth the 2 hours you'll never get back and the braincells it will kill. This is truly the worst thing I have ever played. Every review complains about the illegible translation and font, and the terrible controls. All that is true. You can't remap the controls, and they're really atypical for a metroidvania so it's annoying for the whole game. The game doesn't read half your input, and a lot of your input lags awfully. Saving is also terrible, you need to walk back all the time to get gems if you die, and you can't heal since healing items either spawn randomly or appear in really inconvenient rooms. And none of this is even close to the biggest issues this game suffers from. That is the absolutely nonsensical, mind meltingly infuriating combat system and enemy design. Half the enemies don't deal contact damage. The other half do. Some of them oneshot you on contact because ♥♥♥♥ you. Attacks in early game are telegraphed, but after the second level it starts getting really weird and confusing, and then for the final boss the dev apparently decided it's overkill to animate any indication that you're about to be thrown into lava. But by far the worst offense was making the bosses invulnerable to any damage until they're done doing their thing, which, combined with the lack of attack telegraphing, makes for the least fun, most infuriating boss fights I have ever tried. I never had any idea when to hit a boss, because 9/10 it just wasn't taking damage. Abyssmal game design, and least fun I've ever had in a game. So, onto the pros... Well, somehow despite all that the dev had a solid grasp of the genre. Don't get me wrong, the execution is terrible, truly irredeemably so. But this is, indeed, a metroidvania. It checks all the boxes. Exploration felt... Lackluster but non offensive compared to the rest of the game, and without the awfully tedious saving system I imagine it'd have felt a little better. There were upgrades and the game does, technically, require going back to early areas to unlock... Something. Idk what it was, I refuse to play a second more of this than I have to to finish the main questline or whatever the game story wanted me to do. And yes, the art was pretty. Most reviews say, if you value art and charm above all else, this is for you. I fully disagree. Respect your time and sanity. There's so many beautiful games out there. This one is not it. There is genuinely no good enough reason to buy this game, at any price.
