With 1,300+ reviews, make sure to follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
You play as Jack and your friend Geoff has got you a job aboard the Sunchaser working in the Archaeology department as an apprentice. The Sunchaser is on a voyage to the Artic, but it won’t be held back by seas of ice as the Sunchaser is an airship. With the help of your friend Geoff, you hope to learn but also have a bit of fun on the journey. However, things soon don’t start to make sense, Geoff doesn’t seem to be around, and no-one even knows him, yet he is the one who got you the job on the Sunchaser. So, where is he and what is going on aboard the Sunchaser? On your first day you are shown around the Sunchaser where you introduce yourself to the staff of the Sunchaser. Your day on the Sunchaser is divided into morning, afternoon and evenings. You’ll wake up in the morning (most of the time, lazy git oversleeps a bit) usually to someone calling you, you will then head off to work for Professor Clarke. He’ll send you off to do a couple chores after which you can spend the rest of the day left to your own devices. You may have other objectives to complete but if not, you can then do whatever you want. The Sunchaser is divided into different floors, you have the Commons, Main Deck Lower Deck spread over the different floors. In the Commons you will find places like the Library, Infirmary, Dining Room and Ballroom. Visiting the library in your own time you can read books and learn new information. You can also interact with people throughout the Sunchaser. Some of the people may have a task for you, while some of the tasks must be completed and completed within a certain time frame, other tasks you can ignore if you so wish too. At the end of day, you head back to your quarters where you can crawl into your pit and get a good night's sleep. Just remember to save your current progress by visiting the white door which opens if you walk towards it. I found out the hard way that this is how you save the game, I hadn’t walked towards the right and had the door open. Instead, I went to the left and headed after crawling out of my pit and going to start work. It wasn’t until a bit later that I needed to go out and I couldn’t find how to save my game, there’s no save button in the settings or anywhere else. There is a Load Game in the options which has Quick and Normal Save options to load, but I couldn’t find out how to save my game. So, after a bit I thought well it has quick save so maybe the game is being saved automatically for me. So, I hit on my next problem, trying to exit the game. I found in the settings the exit button (Y on game pad) but no matter how many times I hit the Y button the game would just not close. I have had buttons not working right away while in game and I was just thinking this was the case. However, it got to the point where I was almost bashing my fist down on the Y button but still the game would not close. So, I went old sk00l and hit ALT+F4, the bloody game closed then. Later that night I decided to carry on playing the game. However, upon starting the game up and going to load screen, I noticed that my game hadn’t been quick saved like I had hoped it would have done earlier in the day. So, I had to restart the game from scratch, which was a bit of a pain as I found the start of the game a bit slow. Jack starts suffering hallucinations while on the Sunchaser and you will switch in and out of being on the Sunchaser and in your hallucinations at various points in the game. Jack will fight horrors while hallucinating, you do have weapons, a pistol and axe but you can buy more from the Magician and Pablo who will also sell you other items which may be of interest, or you can sell anything you don’t want to them. While in these hallucinations, things on Sunchaser aren’t going as smoothly as they should be. And you quickly become a person of interest to the authorities. You will interact with other crew and characters around the Sunchaser, and you will have choices to make depending on the situation. If you answer favourable with characters, then you’ll gain increase affection between the characters, however, you can also lose affection as well if you don’t make the right choices. Professor Clarke gave you an Alchemical Cube which you can use to craft items such as potions, bullets and other things. You will need to find the right resources which can be found when in hallucinations through the breaking of barrels or other items and from defeating the monsters lurking about which may drop a sack of loot. The loot could be resources such as Sulphur, Copper bullets or even a few pennies. You can then use the pennies you found to buy items, new weapons and resources from the Magician and Pablo if you spot them on your journey. Along with Jack having weapons he also has Elements Powers at his disposal. These can be upgraded with the right resources and used to help you to defeat your enemies. I did find the game a bit slow to begin with and it started to get more interesting the further I got into the game. The artwork is good, and I haven’t had too much in the way of problems. I mentioned earlier the slight problem with saving the game and losing my progress, however, there are a couple other little problems I’ve encountered. One of the problems is that sometimes when pressing a button on my gamepad nothing works, they are just unresponsive, only for a second or two but still a little bit annoying at times. The other problem I have noticed is that the Achievements are not working. Now this isn’t a really big problem for me but there are those which might be a game breaker. Hopefully they will sort the problem out with some update in the future. In the options you have settings for AV - Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Master Volume and Resolution. Game - Colour Mode, V-Sync, Player and Enemy Outline, Minimal Shadows and Lights. Controller options with five Controller Type gamepad layouts. That reminds me, setting the resolutions doesn’t stay the same although no matter what I change it to it doesn’t make much difference in how it looks. Positives + Nice artwork + Multiple endings + Carry items, stats and money over to a new game + Has achievements Negatives - Achievements not working currently - Gamepad buttons unresponsive at times - No cards currently Help Jack to overcome his mental and physical nightmares, discover where his friend Geoff has disappeared too and investigate what is happening aboard the airship, the Sunchaser. 5/10
Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes via THE CPT FROGGY CLUB! Interesting Characters and story! Can't wait to play more!
Intriguing story, like the environment the mood of the game, excellent music.
the games really cool, its got a ton of splitting paths for repeatability, and each path takes very different turns. the gameplay is nice too if you enjoy rougue likes or rpgs, has good and dialog options general writing with honestly iconic characters. Good stuff i wanna see more
The game is interesting and I definitely recommend it. The visuals and music are standouts amid the strong story as you embark on a quest to understand what exactly is going on. Jack, the protagonist, gains insight and powers as he advances in the story. There are also many key NPCs to interact with and to learn the story from. What's interesting is that interactions with important NPCs are not required and can ultimately impact how the story plays out. The music is chef's kiss. I recommend checking this out!
The visuals are nice, and the mystery is building. Just started, and looking forward to playing more.
A great social system and story falls apart due to glitches, bugs, and a combat portion that is miserable to play through. Money has no point as any item you buy/pick up never appears in your inventory. For a 20 dollar game the sheer amount of bugs makes this a no go.
So far I am enjoying myself, but I think I'm going to continue this on PS5 or Switch rather than Steam. My main criticism is of Steam itself. You're knee-capping Indie games by preventing people from being able to get achievement points and the other shenanigans here. Can Steam really not tell the difference between this game and shovelware tic-tac-toe?
played claire and aphelion by hailstorm games in the past and always a great time playing their games. its a tiny team of devs with only a handful of people so im always happy to show them some support.
Fun combat, works on steamdeck, and great music!
