This is a very cute game. The characters are funny, voice acting is good, music is nice, and I had a good time playing. I played the nice guy, guess I will have to go back and try to be a jerk :) Edited to add: Went back and did the Bad Boy route, the Bad Boy route has some great puzzles that you miss by taking the good route. Definitely worth a second play through.
The prologue was great and it made me excited. When I completed the game all I can say is ... I am a little disappointed. Most of the dialogues are bland, I have the impression that most of the missions are the same only the mini-games change. Need something? then you must first do something for that person in return. This game does not beat The Great Perhaps - this game had its atmosphere and most of all the story was moving and beautiful.
This isn't a bad game, but I take issue with the writing itself. I'm totally able to get into the weirdness of it all, but I thought it was a little...precious. Like a little too quirky for my taste, and not handling dark humour very well. I found certain things handled very awkwardly, such as the sweater-wearing kid who
turns out to have been a wannabe school shooter who lost his memory...
- I wasn't a fan. It wasn't handled in a particularly ingenious way. This is a potentially nitpicky thing coming from me: I also found the characters of Louis and Fida borderline......eeeeeeh....weeeellll...you know. I'm not like, calling out and pointing a finger right now to have anyone cancelled, I'm not there, but like...really? They were each awkward in their own way and I gotta say, I skipped a lot of Louis' dialogue and I rolled my eyes as to why Fida wanted to be in Whateverland. That's where I'll leave that point. Sorry for vagueness. The puzzles themselves were okay, but either overexplained or underexplained (how weird!). However I truly loved the last lockpicking puzzle. Then there's that turn-based strategy minigame which was introduced very awkwardly. I'm not against it being in the game at all, in fact it wasn't too bad, but it felt a little forced. Overall, on sale or free and you are addicted to puzzle and/or PnC? Sure. If you are expecting a really good, bizarre, story experience with strong puzzles? No.
If there were an opportunity to put a mark of Can't-Decide or Whatever, it'd suit better, but it is what it is. The game itself if fine, though my issue with it is that it's rather bland. To begin with, the game advertises itself as one showing charismatic characters and dark humor. Well, I'd played Deponia, and it's got more dark humor or, fairly speaking, charismatic characters simply on its first location! Here...what was the dark humor exactly? "Oh, a lantern. I'd like one of those." "Neon? I though they'd gone our of fashion." Although there were a couple of witty jokes and one grave moment, the vast majority of it is like mentioned above. Oh, and lots of comic cliches! They're straightforward and hence insufferable. Another torturous moment is the gameplay. I've got lots of issues here. One of them is that you click on an item, its menu opens, and unless you hover your mouse over one of the options and choose, the character is absolutely immobile. The player is unable even to choose another item on the screen, so every time one clicks a wrong item the procedure is the following: hover your mouse over the cancel button, click it, and then choose your next action by dragging your mouse to the other end of the screen. This is so inconvenient! And! And! Sometimes, as it was in my experience, I hadn't noticed my clicking an item and was thinking the game had frozen or crashed, or something else. Here comes another problem that to access your character's inventory, you have to drag your mouse to the icon, click it, then do something there and close it. In other quests with item menus, and so far in Deponia (where you can call your bag with a mouse roll, and the game is almost a decade older, mind you), there's an issue that you want to interact with an item but the character walks instead and by it closes the window, but believe me this is not as pesky as not being able to move because of your inventory or an item menu open. This is simply irritating! What else is nettling is in the game's vital system of Bells & Bones matches. You have to pass them, either skipping matches with yarns or indulging yourself. I've won every one of them, and I have no idea what it was exactly. Like, there are three bugs, each with a unique skill, which your opponents never use but for one, rooting. If I choose to play and not skip it, presumably I accept a bit of a challenge, don't I? There was none. All of the opponents play like a 600 ELO bot in chess, so this mini-game is meaningless by itself, only worsened by the gameplay issues: when you click a bug, its squares for movement are visible, and oftentimes you cannot move there without any reason, though in other cases if your unit cannot go somewhere, the square is not highlighted, therefore, the system is supposed to highlight precisely those squares where that unit can move. But it doesn't. It's weird. Add to it, I almost lost one match because of my bug starting wondering somewhere far instead of knocking the opponent's unit and capturing the bell. I guess it'd be better without this mini-game at all, though I like the design of Bukashas. The atmosphere there is cute. The last thing is the quest compartment. Well, there isn't much of it. Yes, there are some undemanding riddles and a couple of item interactions, but that's pretty much it. And, again, the gameplay: sometimes you need to open the inventory to drag an item to a place on the map, as it happens in other quests, but sometimes it doesn't work, so you have to go through the procedure of moving your mouse to close the inventory, after which... in brief, the same procedure again. Then the item activated automatically by plainly interacting with the item through its menu. There's little logic here. All in all, the game has some pleasant graphics and soundtrack, the dialogs are not aggravating, the characters are sweet, and some jokes can give you a smile. If you have the mood and a good discount, why not try it. However, I personally can't recommend it in earnest. Hope this review is helpful.
Fun story, fun puzzles. However, the Turkish localization is beyond terrible. Play in the original language.
