About
We Are The Caretakers is a sci-fi strategy RPG with an epic 23-mission narrative campaign. Assemble a secret faction of protectors in squad-building systems inspired by Ogre Battle, Darkest Dungeon, Black Panther, and XCOM. Defend the endangered animals your world relies on in strategic turn-based combat. Define your approach to a global resistance by balancing your reputation, funds, research, animals and alliances.
We Are The Caretakers is an exciting new type of strategy game, blending squad building, RTS-with-pause, narrative, and turn-based JRPG combat into one thrilling campaign. The game introduces players to an original sci-fi universe with nuanced characters, grim dark narrative, deep mysteries, layered unit management challenges, and escalating conflicts that have no easy or absolute solutions. It is developed by a critically-acclaimed and diverse team including IGF nominees, ex-Microsoft, and ex-Blizzard developers.

REPUTATION SYSTEM: Every action committed in the world affects how others see the Caretakers. Do they fear you? Or will they support your quest to protect the endangered Raun, and decide the fate of the world?
TURN-BASED ENCOUNTERS: Balance force with diplomacy in an innovative turn-based combat system. Live with the consequences as you deal with the messy reality of animal conservation.
SQUAD BUILDING: Assemble up to 9 exploring parties from 100s of characters with diverse traits, weaknesses, abilities, and personalities. Train and upgrade your Caretakers across 30+ unique job classes.
ORIGINAL SCI-FI WORLD: Former Blizzard artist Anthony Jones' breathtaking afrofuturist style and signature character designs bring a new sci-fi world to life.
GROW YOUR HEADQUARTERS: Meet leaders, research technologies, and recruit allies in your sci-fi HQ. Balance their conflicting demands to save our world.
DARK NARRATIVE: The individuals outside your squad matter as much as the rangers you deploy on each map. Follow a grim narrative from devastating losses through a hope of a better future.
TECHNOLOGY TREE: From field-level technology upgrades, to large-scale speculative research and development, your technology decisions have a global impact.
YOU GET A BABY RAUN: It will nuzzle against your bed long after it grows too large to reasonably do so. It is adorable.

An interesting blend of mechanics! The best I can describe it is an XCOM style geoscape layer complete with recruitable characters with class trees as well as a tech tree. Under that is an map layer where you move your squad(s) around on a board, interacting with hostile and friendly units and gather resources. And below that is a turn-based combat layer similar to JRPGs. I did not expect the twist at the end of the first chapter and am excited for more! At the time of this writing the game is still in alpha so there are rough edges in terms of UI, but I like what I see overall
I've been following WATC for a while. The studio is passionate about what they've made and that shows in the story and mechanics. There's really no game like WATC, I recommend you check it out and expose yourself to something unique and special.
There is still a lot of work to do through early access. I experienced a consistent CTD bug after researching tech. The visuals leave a lot to be desired. I can see that there is a pretty cool game in here and I am looking forward to it getting better. I would definitely wait for this one to cook a little longer before picking it up. https://youtu.be/w4IUS9ciM9o
This game has not enough reviews so here is mine: "We Are The Caretakers is a sci-fi turn-based squad management RPG." The chosen setting is quite unique as you are tasked with leading squads of alien wildlife protectors through real time maps on alien planets to protect alien wildlife. You conquer territories, gather evidence and clues, disarm traps and combat poachers. The combat is turn based and offers a decent amount of different classes with their respective trees and abilities to play with and build strategies. Its up to you if you want to keep the poachers alive and arrest them, make them run away or down them for good to set an example. Your choice will influence how your agency is perceived and might lead to different attitudes down the line. Outside of the missions you are in your headquarter, deciding what to do next, setting up your squads and unlocking new technologies / upgrades that help you out on your missions. For an early access game it looks very promising, the starting price is reasonable and a portion of the sales goes to an actual real life wildlife fund aptly called "Rhino Recovery Fund" by the Wildlife Conservation Network. I only played several of the story missions but what I saw so far makes me interested in more and I will keep an eye on the updates and ultimately the final release. Long story short, if the mechanics interest you I recommend giving it a go. Especially the fresh setting is something I have to applaud as I have trouble coming up with anything like it.
This game is a great concept, and the Afro-futurist aesthetic adds a layer of depth I did not expect. Yes, it is early access/beta, so there's bugs, but the dev team is available nearly 24/7 to discuss problems and hear feedback. This is indie game development done right, and what is already a good game will be an outstanding final product as a result. Think of the early access purchase as a long term investment that is going to pay off soon! tldr: buy this. support indie games, and immerse yourself in Afro-futurist sci-fi! 9/10 (will give it a 10 once it's finished)
One of my friends said this game is sci-fi super soldier park rangers and that is spot-on. The combat is a blast. The game is still buggy in early access but that doesn't block it from being a beautiful and fun experience. Also - that music, man. So. Good. Check it out if you like: Final Fantasy-esque combat and graphics and music, Divinity Original Sim's combat, rhinos, park rangers Main word that comes to mind when I play this game: protector
As stated, it is an early access game, there are some UI issues that detract from the experience. * You can't press escape to close the current window consistently. * You can't highlight each unit to see what class they are as visually I can't see the difference. * You cannot name the unit or give it a leader. * The classes seem interesting but they're quite limited at this stage. * The detain function seems cool but, I don't get why some of the options are both negative, ie Give Bribe and Give Bribe being the two only options sometimes. * It is pretty easy to get full reputation in the story mode at this time, however money is very scarce and I seem to have run out in the 2nd Era after fielding too many units. If anyone had gotten this far, I do recommend the game at this price and I see it has some potential. This does somewhat fill the Ogre Battle/Last Remnant combat itch but needs a bit more refinement and depth. Looking forward to seeing what the developers can do moving forward.
I was really excited about this one based upon the fact that its squad layouts made it look like Ogre Battle. It's not. It's actually almost exactly like Northgard but with minimal building, bad graphics, slow movement, and somehow an even slower turn based combat system. I'd call it half baked, but that's probably giving it too much credit. Quarter baked? You can tell when a game is terrible by the fact that achievements that take only 15 minutes to reach aren't granted to over half of the players. They are charging a lot of money for this one at $20. Why? Just donate directly if you want to support a good cause and leave these guys out of it.
FOR READERS FROM THE FUTURE OF VERSION 1.0: THESE THOUGHTS ARE BASED ON THE EA VERSION OF THE GAME Although there are still some early access quirks, the core gameplay loop is already well executed. The setting really gives me hope for a future in games where truly meaningful representation becomes the core principle of building worlds that don't just copy the same Western stereotypes over and over ad nauseam. + Unique setting + Intriguing story + Complex turn-based combat with lots of variety + Well-crafted class tree - Randomization makes for weird outcomes when dealing with detained poachers (in description and choices) - Maps, objectives and barks from town leaders tend to repeat themselves in chapters 2 and 3 - Graphical glitches (e.g. hit animation plays even if an attack is dodged)
