Like others have said- basically WH40K meets XCOM. However, the difficulty scaling is absolutely absurd. It'd be fine if the game mechanics were better balanced towards this. Bloom is basically the Avatar project from XCOM but in every mission, and it rises 25% every turn + 5-10% if you use "warp" based abilities. This leads to any random hat pull of enemy buffs, extra pod spawns, or debuffs for you. You have a squad limit of 4 typically, but even tiny autoguns will do like 3-5 HP out of your 10-15 of your grey knights. Cover mechanic is cool in theory - I like the idea of not missing shots as the way XCOM will RNG screw you on a 99% hit chance and you'll miss. However it feels all but worthless when you're still taking a quarter of your health bar from a tiny cultist's weak ass autogun while behind heavy/full cover. Your Astartes feel more like Astra Militarium recruits in terms of durability. I really want to like this game, as a fan of XCOM, and even bigger fan of WH40K. But the balancing, difficulty scaling, and strangely restrictive design choices really hold this game back. Keeps all the worst parts of the XCOM formula - I.E. time waster cutscenes and painfully slow camera locked units when executing any order. The only perk is I feel they did quite well with respecting the 40K lore. Grey Knights don't get nearly enough screen time in my opinion, so it is really cool to play as them. But again, poor balancing, awful design choices really cloud what would otherwise be a gem. Grab it on a sale unless you're just a die hard fan looking for a ball/ovary kicking experience dripped in a 40K setting.
This game is amazing when it comes to narrative and production value. Especially compared to Mechanicus 2 which I played recently. The writing is so much better it is staggering. It bring believable story about Grey Knights vs Death Guard and gives you the rich lore of Grey Knights and Nurgle. The main story missions are extremely fun and well made. But then comes the diffucilty and how the warp surge is handled. The game is extremely ruthless when it comes to diffuculty. Your only choice is to play on lowest difficulty or cheese the whole game with extra AP spamming with Justicar + Interceptor combo. And that is not fun at all. You are Grey Knights ffs! The most potent demon hunters out there. And your battle brothers are getting plagued (dot damage) and take tons of damage from cultists with autoguns which is ridicilous. Not to even mention that while you are swarmed in most fights and take tons of chip damage which will whittle you down. Even with the most agressive approach you often just spend time and turns chasing enemies that keep running away and shooting you. Meanwhile even the most basic enemies can tank storm bolters because on max range you do half the damage and if they are in cover then it is not even worth to waste a shot. Most classes are useless with only one build working and there is not time or wiggle room to try builds. Because if you lose leveled Knights then you are ♥♥♥♥♥♥. You wanna change your build? Then you have to wait for a long time to reset the points. The missions get so hard that you cannot level up any more and situation quickly spirrals out of control. Also the bossfights (apart from the finale) are extremely easy and some missions even with low threat (like tentarus hive) are pure undistilled ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. You run around the map have to split your knights and you get bombed and plagued every turn and also hit warp surge so many times because the objectives are spread around a huge map. The game really suffers from this feeling where you roll your eyes at all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ they throw at you where you are nearly powerless if you do not use cheese tactics like Honot the Chapter + interceptor who uses extra AP from crits and teleports. I hope in the Deatwatch sequel will adress this issue of feeling underpowered. Because the sloggy feeling Demonhunters has really lessens how good the big story beats are. The fights in those parts of the game are so fun that I wish the whole game was like this. Hell give us more OP abilities and ranged weapons and swarm us with enemies so it balances out. Also it would tunde down the need to cheese every fight with AP stacking and bursting enemies down being only valid tactic.
This game suffer just one main issue: the balance was made by dumb developers who could not find a better way to make the game more challengin than make it stupidly difficult without any reason, just in some missions. You'll find yourself playing Grey Knights, who struggle to kill a single poxwalker in melee, but can be shot down by a couple of cultists. If you know something about 40K lore this will sound already incredibly stupid, but someone else might say "well it's just a game, there must be dissonance between lore and gameplay" and that would be fine, except sometimes you'll fine yourself basically facing 3 squads when normally you should face just one, so being overwhelmed is obviously easy. I started a campaign at the difficulty beyond normal, i had to delete the campaign after three missions because the enemy simply became bullet sponges and there was no real strategy that could help you win because enemies lethality was simply way too high. I tried then an easy campaign and i got bored, so again another at normal and jesus ♥♥♥♥♥♥ christ they cannot do something decent can they. That's probably why these devs are not developing anything any longer, they are simply pathetic incompetents.
Would be great if it wouldn't have the game breaking bug of being FROZEN in turns. I'm stuck at the Tutorial because the game it's glitching and my troops won't move! Can't select a turn, nothing! Apparently it's a glitch that hasn't been fixed! I've already restarted the game, verified files etc.. still happens! only got it for like 6 euro on sale and i regret buying this.. not even able to go through tutorial without a bug.. what a waste of time and money..
I feel compelled to leave a review to balance out the new reviews that are more negative. This game is masterful. A good combination of XCOM and Gears Tactics. It is a challenging game, but certainly within reason. The Technophage missions are balanced poorly in the early game, but they can be skipped and/or attempted. Its hard to lose members in this game, at worst they will fall with a critical damage indicator for one turn, and then re-rise and simply require some surgery / rest time back at base. You can field a large barracks and use startegem cards to tilt the balance in your favour. This is my third play-through. Although I can easy beat XCOM 1/2/Chimera on Impossible difficulty, this game best I can do is 4/5. Still more to learn and exploit I guess. Good game -- 8.8/10.
It doesn't feel like you're playing as a Grey Knights, more like imperial guardsmen with extra abillities. This game somehow manages to feel less balanced than XCOM 2 LWOTC.
I want to like and recommend this game, I really do. But I don't and I can't. I'm a big fan of Xcom and love those games so when I found Xcom with Warhammer I was supper excited to play this. But the game is just frustrating and unbalanced. It has several mechanics that aren't clearly told to the player or are not told at all! All the debuff effects aren't even explained and you have to find them in the settings menu to read what they do. half the enemies will soak up all your actions from a single Knight to not even kill thanks to the stupid armor mechanic and then they'll just heal next turn and lets not forget that the game wants you to play aggressive but the enemies out range you making it harder to rush them down to kill, and if you try to use ranged guess what you're doing less damage then if you melee. I think if the armor wasn't so strong and enemies didn't out range you I think this game would be so much better. So, armor blocks damage once a turn and then regens the next turn, the problem is that it fully regenerates and at the start of the game after like three missions you'll start fighting Plague Marines who always have at least three armor, so even if you use all three of your actions to attack one a single knight won't kill them without help. Then on the START of the next turn they instantly regen all the armor so you can't easily set up an overwatch or reaction attack to kill them as the armor will save them. Then they can outrange you with their guns, making shooting barely useful especially since cover either lowers your damage or makes it so you can't shoot them so you have to waste actions to flank them, might as well try melee only at that point. All of this has made my favorite class the Assassin that literally ignores armor as she can pierce all of it! And that's a DLC character! And all of this is me playing on Normal, I might try it on Easy at a later date just to see if the gameplay feels better but I shouldn't have to go to the easiest difficulty when the game says that Normal is what it was made to be played on to make the game feel balanced.
