Absolutely terrible! Extremely buggy, simplistic AI, TERRIBLE UI, unbalanced, and uninspired story. I love the graphics and the look of the game. It really reminds me of old school games and some anime, but you’re really better off just playing an older game, or at least a different one. At most this game is worth $1-$2 but really just skip it. (There are many more examples, I’m just listing the ones that bothered me the most. This game isn’t worth the time to list them): Bug examples: If you have a dual monitor setup and click outside the game you usually have to force close the game because when you select the game again and click anywhere except the dead center of the game (even then sometimes) the game will minimize and you can’t get back into it. If you try to save a map in the map editor before placing start locations, you get an error telling you that you need start locations (great!), however you can never save that map even if you add the locations. Your only option is to close everything and start again. Add the locations and then save. Even with battle animations set to skip all you have to watch animations every time a unit is destroyed. Achievements don’t trigger properly Ex: s rank on all missions does not properly fire. I even tried playing the final mission again (yes I got s on it again) and it still didn’t fire. AI example: Enemy units that need to move one square to fire at your units just sit there on some maps. Even if a unit can destroy yours in one shot it will always try to capture points even if you have multiple units surrounding it. So instead of you losing units you just put your guy next to the capture point and mow down the AI. The AI will just let units stay where they are and fight one at a time, in multiple situations, instead of moving and attacking. The AI doesn’t seem to know how to use abilities properly. UI examples: You have to always hold down your left mouse button to speed up the gameplay. Instead of keeping the camera where you have it, it resets every turn to where it decides your base is and goes there. You cannot load checkpoints even though you can save them. There is no next/previous units button. There is also no way to select unmoved units so you have to search the map to make sure you moved everything. The units don’t auto capture points if you end your turn on them accidentally(the end unit turn and capture buttons are right next to each other, I have clicked the wrong one multiple times). There are no tool tips on skills. A number of abilities just say they will apply something, like virus, overcharge ect… but the only place that tells you what those abilities do are deep in the menu under help files. You can’t really zoom out and even if you do it forces info boxes on the top and bottom of the screen so you can’t really move around the map quickly. You can’t just select a unit and right click to move it or use a hot key, you have to first select the unit that actually click the move button then click where you want it. (IE no hotkeys for many useful things) Unbalanced: Unit balance is a joke. It’s really sad that unit the last couple missions your commander can solo all the maps. About 60% of the units can be one shot by a number of the other units. The buff/degen system is a joke. EX: If you cast armor, aim, and overdrive buffs on a unit and the enemy casts an armor negative instead of canceling out the armor buff it just goes negative and removes all positive buffs. As for the story…. If you like it great but I couldn’t find anything redeeming about it.
I usually only review a game I completed or a game which doesn´t have an ending, like it is endless or online, however I am not sure I will play this to the end. I love the idea of a simple and clean turn based mech game, really great idea, however it falls short from there. Story/narrative: Yay for a female lead on a mecha game, but sadly she goes for the whole cliche of superpowered/enhanced pilot which I highly dislike - they try to say it has counter effects to her health but meh, I like my heroes being normal people who earn everything they have through sheer effort and experience. Other characters so far seem quite bland too. The political background feels interesting with many factions but I feel it is less expored than it could. The art: Now that is my area and I think the mechs are a mixed bag - some look too industrial, others too humanoid and light to a point they don't even look like they are from the same universe - also movement is beautiful, but a bit too human at times. That being said I love the pathfinder design xD Settings and maps look nice enough. Now one thing which is hideous as hell are the character portraits, I wonder if those were made with those bland looking face editors people used in the early 2000"s for rpgmaker games, really inexpressive. The gameplay: I like the simplicity, really do, however the game fails on prontly informing you what each status do, or for exemple when enemies lay mines - I was wondering why enemies where shooting to the sky with their pistols and only found those were mines by stepping into them. Another issue is how easily it is to have a unit be one-shot killed - I know it happens a lot in gundam and I hated that about the franchise - you are talking really tall, heavy and expensive vehicles, they should be able to withstand some punishment, even lighter ones. The protagonist mech is tottally broken which also gets back to my issue with the plot and her being "the chosen one". So yeah, negative review, but to be fair I´d give it a five for the idea.
Audio: Good music, some of the sound effects are lackluster. Some weapons make sad little "pew" noises instead of something more imposing. Visual: Mostly good, the art is a bit off sometimes. In game, there is little distinction between buildings for cover and buildings to capture. Also, the first faction you play is red, but the UI always has blue for your team's map icons and dialogue, and red for the enemy's. The other factions have other varied colors, why make the first group you play as the UI color for the enemy? Gameplay: Very reminiscent of Advance Wars. Your commanders level up, which is nice, but you get no choice in the level up process, it's on rails upgrades. And speaking of the upgrades, they aren't very exciting. +X% to Y stat makes up 90% of them. Leveling up does not grant new abilities or units, so it's not particularly exciting. Also, every commander has a super move that they can use when the super meter is filled. What sucks is that the super meter fills up more when your units get killed. So if you are doing really well and destroying lots of enemy units, the enemy commander gets their super move. I thoroughly dislike this, because it punishes you for having a good strategy. Then again, the super moves are fairly uninspired (get +X to Y bonus for one round), so I guess it's trivial if you don't use it much. Regardless, the mechanic is not fun. Good idea, falls short in execution. I would give it a "medium" if that was an option.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3386684473

[English] Fine then. I guess we'll have to use force!

「危険は冒せない」(we can't take any chances) → 「イチかバチかだ」と逆の意味に変換。
「とはいえ、長くは持ちそうにない…」(Though we can only hold them at bay for so long...)

Boring. I can't say the game is bad overall. But you are fighting not against robots, not against their AI, you are fighting against unlimited spam of these robots.
WARBORN is a Nintendo Switch game that somehow also got put on Steam (in what feels like an afterthought). It's an anime/mecha themed turn based strategy game where you give instructions on a small hex map to a bunch of painfully generic looking Japanese giant robots. Okay. There's some plusses here, like a map editor, multiplayer (but no players, we'll get into why later), and, well, the game "works" if you try to play it (but not many did). One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. As mentioned, there's no-one around for the multiplayer feature. Why not? Because, from a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. It's nice that the robot models look 3D at least, but they're just 2D animations of 3D renders. It's 2024, you know, computers are capable of rendering their own 3D graphics now! Oh yeah, this is a Nintendo Switch game. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. As a matter of fact, I was surprised to see this wasn't available on app stores, because that's the kind of experience the game provides. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The game never really caught on with the millions of gamers on Steam, with a very low peak player count close to launch, and then just a handful of players launching this game every couple of days. This is undoubtedly caused by factors such as those raised in this review. It's always helpful with buying decisions to consider how popular and successful the product is, and unfortunately while this did accumulate a few participation trophy reviews, overall, people just aren't using it. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? WARBORN has the farcical price of $25 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $25 asking price for this game could get you games like "Alien: Isolation", "Subnautica" or "Disco Elysium". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Easily recommended for fans of turn-based tactics, Advance Wars, robots, and strategy. For the amount of content it is worth the asking price, and a steal on sale. Most of the issues are just nitpicks, the gameplay is great. Also worth checking out Sunrider, Wargroove, BattleTech, and the Front Mission series if you haven't already. +Visuals, art style, animations, UI +Music +Difficulty options +Variety of options overall +Mechs +Turn-based tactics battles +Variety of units and special skills +Deploy/build units and heroes +Map Editor -No key rebinding -Unlisted hotkeys (WSAD - camera, H - objectives, Space - commands, Esc - options) -Lacking hotkeys for move, attack, end turn, advance dialogue -Story/characters not well developed -No upgrades/progression -No voice -No camera zoom except to view objectives -Mechs can't change/lose parts, act as soldiers only -Speed up must always be held (no toggle) -Some missions drag due to hunting straggler units -Statuses can't be refreshed until they expire -Some status unclear/lack tooltips -Later chapters can get repetitive / lack new units -Same units for all 4 commanders/factions
I'd give this game a C- overall. It scratches the tactical itch but definitely get it on sale. Missions are very repetitive and toward the end become a grind to even complete. The story exists but isn't fantastic. All that said, I appreciate what the devs were trying to accomplish and there are some genuine fun moments in this flawed game.
4/10 most of what you do is move 8 guys from 1 side of the map to the other past choke points - combat is ok, wish each unit could do more. for example this unit can move extra far on this terrain or gets 2 plus def when on city. how about a unit that could toss other units across the map - cant trade attack for movement - cant level or upgrade anything - price 25$ + map editor
