This is a really cute point & click short story but way too expensive for how long it is / how much content there is.
This was all over the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ place and I wouldn't have it any other way :3
Waiting in the Lime Forest is a narrative-focused indie adventure developed by Unica and BARON DU JUVÉNILE and published by BARON DU JUVÉNILE in collaboration with WSS playground and Alliance Arts. At its core, it is a compact, emotionally driven visual novel that blends mystery, psychological drama, and period atmosphere into a tightly structured experience. Rather than relying on elaborate gameplay systems, the title leans heavily into storytelling, character interaction, and mood. It presents itself as a contemplative and at times unsettling journey into themes of memory, guilt, prejudice, and fractured relationships, all framed within a stylized, almost theatrical presentation. The story begins with a tragedy that sets the tone for everything that follows: the death of a child under suspicious circumstances. This event ripples outward, entangling a group of characters whose personal histories and emotional burdens slowly come to light. The player primarily experiences the story through Edward, a composed defense attorney, whose reunion with his old friend Oliver becomes the catalyst for unraveling deeper truths. Oliver, shaped by trauma and haunted by his past, emerges as one of the most complex figures in the narrative. His fragile mental state and ambiguous recollections create an atmosphere of uncertainty, encouraging players to question what is real and what is distorted by memory or guilt. Mechanically, Waiting in the Lime Forest operates within the framework of a point-and-click visual novel. Players advance through dialogue, make occasional choices, and interact with key objects or scenes that reveal further details about the mystery. The structure is largely linear, but player decisions influence which of several endings they receive. These branching outcomes add a modest degree of replayability, inviting players to revisit earlier scenes with a new perspective. However, the emphasis remains on narrative immersion rather than complex puzzle-solving or mechanical challenge. The experience unfolds more like an interactive short story than a traditional adventure game. Visually, the game distinguishes itself through a distinctive pixel art style that balances minimalism with expressive character design. Environments evoke a historical atmosphere, with settings that feel intimate and somber. The subdued color palette and deliberate lighting choices reinforce the melancholic tone. Character portraits and subtle animation lend emotional nuance to conversations, allowing small gestures and expressions to carry weight. The aesthetic presentation supports the psychological themes, creating a sense of closeness and confinement that mirrors the characters’ internal struggles. Thematically, the game explores heavy subjects, including post-war trauma, societal prejudice, and LGBTQ+ identity. These elements are woven into the character arcs rather than presented as overt commentary. Oliver’s personal conflict and the social tensions surrounding him are integral to understanding the broader mystery. The writing attempts to balance introspection with suspense, gradually layering revelations while maintaining an undercurrent of emotional vulnerability. While the story tackles ambitious themes, its relatively short runtime means that some topics are introduced more than fully explored, leaving certain narrative threads feeling condensed. The pacing is deliberate, with dialogue-driven scenes dominating the experience. This measured approach enhances the emotional atmosphere but may feel slow for players expecting more interactive gameplay. The game’s brevity—often completed in a few hours—contributes to a concentrated narrative arc. For some, this tight focus enhances impact by preventing unnecessary filler. For others, it may feel as though the story ends just as it begins to fully unfold. The emotional resonance largely depends on how invested players become in the characters and their intertwined histories. Sound design and music complement the visual presentation with restrained, atmospheric compositions. The soundtrack supports moments of tension and introspection without overwhelming the dialogue. Ambient audio elements subtly reinforce the setting, deepening immersion. The overall production values reflect its indie scale but demonstrate careful artistic direction and cohesive design choices. Ultimately, Waiting in the Lime Forest is a character-driven mystery that prioritizes emotional storytelling over mechanical complexity. Its strengths lie in its distinctive aesthetic, moody atmosphere, and willingness to engage with difficult themes. While its limited length and linear structure may leave some players wanting more depth or interactivity, it succeeds in delivering a focused, melancholic narrative experience. For those who appreciate story-centric games that emphasize psychological nuance and interpersonal drama, it offers a memorable, if concise, journey through suspicion, memory, and the fragile bonds between people. Rating: 6/10
The game is alright.. but I don't want to reward bad gameplay so here's a thumbs down lol. This is a straight-out visual novel with point-and-click elements. The actual mystery isn't that interesting and the game has a weird tone to it since it was translated from another language but what got me ??!!! was one of the endings, and that doesn't happen often.
Short and sweet. The monochromatic pixel art-like presentation is lovely and the framing effects are surprisingly stylish. The story is all over the place but it's crazy, gay, and with a pinch of voodoo magic. Loved it!
