Very difficult to find some of the hidden objects because of the darkness of the background. Very few actual puzzles. One has to find items in a specific order, for example, if you're going to need a shovel instead of being able to pick it up the first time you see it one has to complete the steps leading up to figuring out that you need the shovel - even when you can see the patch of ground that needs shoveling right in front of you. And to be continued - seriously the game isn't even complete? What a waste of time, that's a couple of hours I'll never see again.
I hate to be so negative about such a small game, but... what the HECK kinda story is that? If you're going to try and infuse your hidden object game with lore and a story, maybe you should actually run with it instead of ending it
SO abruptly with potential MURDER
? Aside from THAT... the game is fine I guess. I hate giving it a thumbs down, but I can't bring myself to give it a thumbs up. The gameplay itself is fine and I enjoyed the puzzles, but the devs really shot themselves in the foot with how they chose to conclude their game... really ruined the whole thing :')
Save New Orleans from A Dark Voodoo Curse
Continuing my trend of playing hidden object adventure games, I decided to try this one after an okay experience with The Fog. This one felt even more fitting for the Spooky Season, which was really lovely. Set in 19th-century New Orleans, we play as a young girl named Lillian, who is being mentored to use her magical abilities by Marie Laveau, the most powerful voodoo priestess around. However, as we are being taught, an evil and mysterious curse is set upon the entire town, putting each person into a deep sleep-like state and trapping their souls in the spirit world. It’s up to us to save everyone before everything becomes lost in darkness. Throughout our adventure, we will learn spells and create potions that will help with a variety of tasks, from getting objects to returning people’s souls and much more. Can we save our teacher and lift this awful curse for good? Compared to other HO adventure games, this one felt slightly different, especially in terms of the graphics, but I don’t know if that’s due to the game's age. I really liked how this felt and thought its use of atmosphere was well done. It captured the spooky vibe that I was looking for. In addition to these aspects, I found the story to be intriguing and very engaging, and I wanted to learn more as I went along. However, I will note that the story does feel a little rushed by the end, and the game is definitely a short experience. As a spoiler,
it makes sense that it is this way because the game ends with a “To Be Continued…” message, so there was meant to be a sequel.
Sadly, I found out that the team who made this parted ways with Gogii Games right after this came out, so we’ll most likely never see a follow-up. I can’t lie and say that it isn’t disappointing, as the story had so much more potential. If only they had been given more time and funds to complete this. Other than this, I found the minigames and hidden object scenes to be fun to play. The scenes were a little tricky in terms of finding objects, but the game has a cool feature that allows the cursor to turn into a magnifying glass. That was a neat and handy feature. I also found the potion-making element of this to be cool. All in all, I enjoyed the game despite specific problems, but that isn’t the fault of the developing team. I would still recommend getting this game when it’s on sale as it isn't complete.
4 out of 5 ★★★★☆!
This game has a lot of potential and I actualy really enjoyed it until the story line was cut short with a "TO BE CONTINUED" .... total bummer there.
Warning: Broken Game! This game has design/implementation defects that will render this unplayable for many gamers. the game doesn't launch properly, it just forces your desktop into a locked 800x600 resolution and hangs, but you can at least alt+tab and kill the game process to recover your desktop.
"Voodoo Whisperer Curse of a Legend" is an older game from 2014. It's a venerable 10 years old at the time of this review. "Voodoo Whisperer Curse of a Legend" is a Hidden Object puzzle game, the type you normally see on mobile app stores or even as browser apps. There's literally hundreds of these on Steam, mostly published by Artifex Mundi, many of them free on mobile app stores, but this one will cost you money on Steam. There's a historial/mystery theme to the game, but this is a just a veneer over a tired and overdone set of hidden object minigames and Adobe Flash tier puzzles, wrapped together with a bunch of static screens that you "move" through by tapping your finger on your iPhone screen. While these kinds of games are popular amongst casual gamers, it's difficult to argue this is a great value proposition as a PC game, especially considering the price of this compared to the hundreds of free HOGs on the mobile app stores. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. This is a really old game, and if they had made it today, it would be on the mobile app stores, but it predates those. It's not clear why they didn't try to dump this on the app stores (since it clearly seems to be here as some kind of nostalgia gouge). Maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes "Voodoo Whisperer Curse of a Legend" might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Unethically, the developers have left this on the Steam store in an unplayable and broken state. It's the responsibility of the developer to maintain their product, ensure it runs on all modern PCs, or if they determine there's defects and the game doesn't work, they should remove it from sale instead of misleadingly trying to scam gamers into buying knowingly defective products. This is harmful to Steam and to gamers, not just because it's a direct and intentional attempt to scam people, but because it takes a share of the marketing space and visibility away from other games. It's polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuine games and for genuine indie developers who put months or years into making proper games find an audience. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? The developer is deliberately and unethically trying to scam gamers into paying them the ridiculous price of $4 USD for a game they know is broken. Don't give it to them. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
short but fun
tldr: an old 'hard on the eyes' game with a missing ending that i would not recommend to any hidden objects game enjoyer aka If you're really that curious about the story just look it up on youtube or something. i hate to dog on game creators but this came out in 2014 so i'm sure i have a little bit of leeway to be a little mean with this, so where do i start? the graphics: the 3d work is ultimately not bad especially for the time in game development with smaller companies/creators however pretty much everything in this game is covered in this like spiderweb texture that makes it hard to see things- yahknow what else makes it hard to see in general? the lights in this game, the lights in this game are blinding to the point i think even people with better eyesight would develop a nasty headache while playing this game (because i sure did) and as well they sometimes straight up block items you need to find in order to progress. gameplay: besides what i said about the weird spiderweb texture on everything and the blinding lights it's got pretty standard hidden object story game mechanics the spell mechanics are pretty neat though not exactly exclusive as i've played much better games with similar mechanics and as well i've played a few other games with crafting mechanics but it was also pretty ok. the use of voodoo: i won't touch too much on this, it's an old game and while i'm not very educated on this sorta thing i believe this game has a decent, while almost 100% not a good in terms of accurate, representation of the religious practice aka it's not just shown as just some evil bad thing, although it being used by our white protag (and grandmother) is where most of the 'iffy-ness' comes from, but like i said i'm not educated in it and this is from 2014 i just wanted to briefly put in my two cents. story: it's a decent story albeit a bit boring for what the subject matter is, there is a much better game that has a very similar story to this game which i can't for the life of me remember the title of, so much so that i had to remind myself pretty much every time a new area was unlocked that i have not played this game before. the ending: like i said in the tldr this version of the game does not contain the ending it just cuts off but with how predictable these stories are it almost definitely was just the protag defeating the evil woman shown at the end and freeing the town, i'd check but i don't think i'm even bothered enough to look up the ending on youtube which isn't really the fault of the dev the story just didn't click with me but yahknow. voice acting was decent, music and sounds were just really loud even at lower settings. one nit pick i have with this game that luckily isn't a very common issue with more modern games is that if your objective is in a different room it will use an entire hint just to tell you to leave the room youre in, not gamebreaking just annoying. uh i can't really think of anything else i'd like to touch upon but like i said just look up this game on youtube don't waste your money like i did it's not anything groundbreaking, i wish i wouldn't have left this sitting on my account for so long before i played it, maybe i could've got a refund lmao.
Generic hidden object game #239. Nothing of note to even say. It's just boring. HOG scenes are usually drab and everything blends together too much. First time playthrough: 3 hours 12 minutes 4/10
Summary
A decent but old hidden object game done well with an unfortunate unfinished cliffhanger ending. Pros + Good gameplay + Decent story Cons - Cliffhanger
Overview
Voodoo Whisperer Curse of a Legend is a decent but old hidden object game with good setting, map exploration, hidden object areas, and puzzles to solve. There is voice overs which are done well enough but unfortunately its only done during the opening scene. It has an interesting enough setting and storyline that explains the motivations of Lillian to keep you going but it isn't anything unique. At this point the game is showing its age but as long as you focus on the gameplay it isn't too bad. The real issue with the game is how abruptly the story ends and you're left with a cliffhanger. Gameplay The gameplay is nothing new or unique in the genre although it is done well. Map exploration is quite important and you don't simply pass through areas without checking key points, some have importance such as items or shows that you may need to backtrack there at a later time. Hidden object zones aren't the toughest as items don't simply blend together so carefully combing through things will net you the items you need to find easily. The puzzles you need to solve are also not too difficult and most are self explanatory. The only part that could get rather confusing I would say is the combining of items, creation of voodoo dolls, and the use of spells. There are places you'd think the spell could be used but you wouldn't be able to or there is something you would need to do first before casting it.

Further digging brings up that the game was cut in half and there is doubtfully going to be a continuation as the original developers has parted ways with developing company Gogii Games. If you find my reviews useful do follow my Curator page for more!
An unremarkable HOG with a bland story, a few irritating pixel hunts, and a couple nonsensical or badly optimized puzzles. I do like the spell mixing concept woven into the story, but the game as a whole is just not worth much thought.
