Abandoned game. Edit: Maybe not an abandoned game...the developers announced a major update coming in May after about a year and a half of no updates. I'm waiting until the update to change my review.
Played this for the first time after the machine hunt update. I really enjoyed it with my 10 yr old. Unlike other crafters, we didn't have to spend hours of grinding resources that took away from the action. My son has quit all other crafters I've played with him because there was not enough action. This game shined in that aspect and he made it to the end.

You know how a lot of games always have a great concept on paper, but when developed they always have some flaw about them that really hinders the enjoyment? Something weird about the controls, a buggy physics engine, terrible writing or DLCs no communications from the devs etc? Volcanoids is a game that somehow manages to be a great concept, and execute this concept just about flawlessly without any of the usual issues you might expect it to have. Sure, it might take a bit to get the hang of things, but there is an in-depth tutorial, an in-game guidebook with information, adjustable difficulty settings, you name it! The developers (as of 2025) are also actively sharing their progress on new updates publicly, and involve the community with suggestions. Overall, this is a great game that offers about 12 hours of gameplay during your first run through the story so far (AS OF 2025, SUBJECT TO CHANGE) with enticing mechanics, good gunplay and a lot of drillship customization!
This has potential but falls flat, its game play isn't balanced, inventory is too small (36 slots), item stacking amount sucks, Armor breaks so fast its barely useful, combat is boring, repetitive, and frustrating. You only have 36 inventory spots that are not separate from your hot bar and usable items including ammo form stacks that don't hold enough. If you are raiding anything 2 star and higher, you have to have no less then 20 grenades, that's four slots gone. Bringing armor that breaks every few shots? Well it stacks to 5 so hopefully you wont get shot too much because health kits also only stacks to 5. The game dose provide a really cool spread of weapons, too bad you cant bring more then 3 along or else them and the ammo will fill up your inventory. This is my biggest gripe, whenever I decide to commit a drill raid, I have to spend 10 minutes crafting everything i need to kill it based on what type it is to then walk over and dodge bullets while throwing grenades until I'm out of them. The whole time I'm being lazer beamed by the never ending droves of bots (this isn't so bad at the start but gets bad post lazer 1). The Ai is bad, combat is bad, game loop is bad, and the world is very empty. IDK anything about these developers but this game is a great concept but horrible execution, its in beta/ early access?? not finished is the point. I hope the game gets better going forward but I don't expect anything above ok. at the time of this review not work the price.
7.5 years in development and I guess this is just a sub-par FPS now?
to that one guy who said only play on modes above easy with friends you're dead wrong im soloing nightmare and you can suck it edit: after procrastination i have soloed nightmare and only died thrice, once from my own stupidity rather than a COG, and twice to COGs, modes above easy only playable with friends my ass
Not abandoned, despite what people are claiming.
DO NOT BUY. Abandoned trash in EA since forever
It's just a massively unfinished product. A lot of the game needs to be entirely reworked. It has a great concept. I believe it has the potential to be a really good game, but it seems to have been in Early Access for quite some time now and I don't believe it will ever be a finished product. Devs seem more concerned with pumping out additional content than fine-tuning the base game and fixing existing issues. Combat is lackluster. You can pretty much defeat everything with a pickaxe or buzz-saw. Enemies are too infrequent. The combat loop gets old, real quick. the storage system is obnoxious and because of that, there is no reason to organize anything. A lot of the grammar and phrasing is just...odd. It's hard to understand at times. Combine that with a general lack of knowledge on most items and it gets very frustrating. I played enough to get an hour for each dollar I spent on it and I don't feel inclined to continue. I'll check back later if there is another major update and see if any of the games issues have been resolved. Until that time, I do not recommend buying this one.
