I don't like being harsh in my indie game reviews and I gave Void Resurgence a fair chance by playing it for a considerable time. Decided to review it only after unlocking everything and climbing to the top of most of the available 240 leaderboards. TLDR: At this stage (v2.0), Void Resurgence is a totally brain-dead RNG-based bug-fest that can only be fun if you are lucky enough to get the essential offense & defense systems in time. Many of the cons I've listed below could have been fixed very quickly but the devs aren't responsive anymore so I'm not holding my breath. PROS: [hr] + Chasing high scores in 240 leaderboards could be fun if the game lets you play your way. + Backgrounds are nice. + Soundtrack is good (but very limited). + Offers 4 difficulty options: Easy, Normal, Hard, Impossible (not really). There are also extra options to customize the Impossible difficulty. CONS: [hr] - There are only 3 levels. The first two levels are scripted 30-minute stages (too long IMO) and the last level is Endless mode (totally random and gets really crazy after you progress further). I would have preferred a higher number of shorter levels. - Most of the game is RNG-based. There isn't a "reroll" or even a "dismiss" option and the game frequently screws up my perfect runs by forcing me to choose from unwanted items. - Everything is auto-triggered so there isn't any tactical use of shields, EMP, etc. - Bosses show up at random locations and they immediately start shooting even when they are out of display! This is one of the most severe shmup design failures and a primary reason for premature deaths! Unfair and infuriating! - Enemy Frenzy completely boxes you in very qucikly (and they are initially not affected by Gravity Anchor or similar items that slows the enemies). Also unfair and infuriating! - Front-biased firepower and weak guided weapons against 360-degree surrounding enemies that move faster than your ship by default. - Tracking Shot weapon can't actually track enemies! It has one job and fails at it! - You need to get a separate weapon system for each of the 4 available enemy bulllet types (red, blue, green, purple) if you want to deflect / cancel them. They don't do anything else. Also boss bullets can't be deflected. You have max 11 core system slots so this is a major waste of resources. I wouldn't mind having a single weapon that deflect all enemy bullets but having 4 weapons for this is just overkill! - Short coin magnet range even fully upgraded - Auto-Upgrade Process Interrupts The Flow and Causes Avoidable Hits - Annoying Forced Big Tooltips/Notifications for Dropped Items & Quests - Stupid thick clouds are covering both sides of the screen where the enemies will creep up on you undetected. - The coins and loot are sometimes dropped out of the display area since there is a wide buffer area on all 4 sides of the screen where the enemies are spawned. - Some info in the game's Library section is not accurate (especially the DPS values). - Given all these issues with the game, the sadistic 30-minute no-hit run (Flawless Victory) achievement will probably make most players rage-quit the game. I finally managed it after a gazillion tries with a very specific build for this achievement. - Needs more distinctive icons for Core Systems - Needs Reroll and Dismiss Buttons for absurd quests - Needs an end of run summary / stats / report sheet - Gamepad support is still half-assed despite many complaints. For instance, you can't chose options in the Pause menu even after enabling Steam Input. - The player ship model is very basic and ship options are basically reskins with minor attack buffs. Ships don't have any unique characteristics so ship selection doesn't really affect gameplay that much. Build variety could have been significantly increased by offering genuinely unique ships and pilots. - On top of all that, the devs don't respond to forum posts anymore.
Gra nie jest zła. Jak za takie pieniądze to zdecydowanie polecam.
This game has awakened my inner 13 year old self that screams obscenities at the screen. It reminds me that I am a child of the 80's and whenever a game gets tense I magically find myself standing in front of my computer. I can smell the sweaty teen desperation to land my initials on that High Score list. For a brief moment in time the only thing that matters in this weird world is killing sh*t. It also affirms why I will never get to play professionally because of my foul mouth. Thank YOU Void Resurgence creators. -Joey
I don't want to go so hard on this game. Cuz it have some great idea and it was fun when you're able to get a build/ roll you are going for. But the Gameplay and Progression are too slow, and Boring. Enemy are tanky af Level are the same, and can get boring as you play. The only fun thing in this game is the way that you have passives and buff on each and every ship. And there's a lot of insane shots for a Shumps can do, you want more bullets patten? Here, in this game, you can do it. Sadly this is a boring game, and if you want this, i would only suggest to get it on a sale. 4/10
When you look at the controls in the options menu you get a message basically telling you to do it yourself using Steam Input. Either the developer can't figure out out to do basic key-rebinding or they cant be bothered. Either way I'm not very impressed. Gameplay is very basic, kind of like Vampire Survivors but a lot more half-arsed. The UI is butt-ugly. There are no waifus.
We played about an hour of this on stream, and honestly? Not a bad time. (I did receive this game for free to do so, but that isn't swaying my opinion) Is it the greatest thing since sliced bread? Not really, no. But for its price (which is comparable to a loaf of sliced bread), it offers a decent bit of stuff. Definitely anything but a bad deal. Notably ran completely fine through Proton, despite the dev not being sure if Linux would work. (yes i daily drive linux sue me) The game is essentially a shmup with vampire survivors-esque upgrades and runs, novel combination that works pretty well. As for some improvements i would like to see: -menus usable via keyboard, this would let the game be played solely with a keyboard which is nice QoL -upgrades feeling more impactful, currently most things dont really feel like they make an impact, weapons are kinda same-y, maybe some bigger boost or mechanical change for the final level of an upgrade? All in all, i'd give this game a solid 7/10 Definitely worth the (very low) price, will be unlocking all upgrades at the very least
Alright I am going to say this now, For the brief time I have played on stream. It is a fun gameplay loop but the game has some problems. For example you can pause during the level up screen which is already basically a pause screen. The game crashed after about 30 minutes so its a little unstable. Its very heavily inspired by games like Galaga and you can tell. With a bit of polish and fixes the game could become a solid entry way for bullet hell players. I can't rightfully say its worth it entirely right now. Given some time though it will absolutely be worth the price!
Having an absolute blast with this game! The music really elevates the experience, the graphics are stellar and each game provides a unique experience! I felt super accomplished after reaching the end (on easy 😂). Spotting names from our community on the leaderboards during a stream is also really special.
