This game is VERY ambitious for a single man to develop, and it shows in places. It can crash every couple of hours when it compiles too much script, and it can bug out a bit with clipping in large battles, pretty standard stuff, and it has frequent auto-saves to compensate. But that's also the good part. This game asks "What if you could play Homeworld, the GOOD version, both as fleet command and an individual pilot?" The first one tried to do the same and set up a compelling story. But it was very difficult to learn the interface, as one might expect. This one is easier, doesn't have such punishing graphics, allowing for larger fleet battles, but you're also in charge of a lot more. Automatic resource trading (money printer) and a Remote Interface permit you to take charge of multiple fleets in turn, across an entire theater of the Oort Cloud. It's amazing one you get the hang of things. You really will feel like your player character is supposed to feel. You are a Stub. A person who sold their body, their memories, and their former life for some unknown reason. You play and find what yuo want to be. SPOILERS FROM HERE ON IN. DO NOT READ EXCEPT FOR CONTEXT IF YOU'RE CONFUSED. ------------------------------------------------------------- You are going to LOSE this game. It's advanced alien invasions done right. NO matter how good you are, no matter how efficient, you will lose in the end. You have to crawl past impossible odds, likely learning over and over again how to set up anything resembling a resistance. You cannot win, only delay. So why do that? To set up the sequel and provide a fun environment for players to learn this punishing game. It even lets you legally cheat, to gentle the learning curve, and it remains challenging. You can't even do fairly well by thinking like a casual, or if space RTS combat isn't something you want to invest time in. You are Fleet Command, dared to make use of your advanced cognitive capabilities in order to forestall the threat. Not just planning, but pre-planning, hardcore, because you are going to get your ass kicked until you don't. And when you finally figure out YOUR best ways to avoid total destruction, it a rewarding experience. Just the lore from this game as a standalone, however seemingly sparse, can fuel your imagination for years. What would you do as a Stub? If everything you think you are is gone, what would you choose to be?
overall the game is fun however the fact some things keep turning themselves on like the forward thrust as well as the fact even though the game is in full screen scrolling to zoom still interacts with tabs open on other monitors. also as soon as the story mission for getting enough rank with the pride faction comes up i suddenly drop to 0% with them and am considered hostile with them even though i previously had already reached mission rank two with them. while working on increasing it my auto trading ships kept getting attacked by them and for a while defend themselves killing attackers making any progress of increasing the friendlyness with them void and making me wanted again or they get destroyed and i lose my trading ships and have to spend more money on rebuilding my trading fleet.
Scratches my space itch
Fun game, lots and lots of ships to explore, I haven't even started messing with the fleet stuff yet
I can't in good conscience give this game a good rating. Even with all the difficulty reducers in effect, some of the priority/story missions are nigh impossible to complete. Even then, the learning curve is horrendously steep, and the lack of good tutorials for this game, both in the guide and in the discussions, add to the difficulty of trying to figure out what the hell you do. And then there is crashes. It crashes a lot, unfortunately, and it's on the most random of things, like undocking, destroying a ship during a battle, and so forth. It's a fun concept, but the execution is badly lacking.. Editing my review, i remembered i can just edit the mission files themselves to make life easier, so there's that. Still crashes a lot, though
This is such a fun game, but i feel a bit bad. My one regret is that i didnt play sooner. If anyone is still in the wings, let me know?
my game is broken .... after hours and hours putting into this to get somewhere near the end of the game it get's more and more broken... after starting to fight with the TSF my main Base (Sanctuary) is not more able to produce Base Capture Ships as my Crew Count of my Station is now -243 .... and it does not recover from that .... this is broken beyond any reason ... also the fights are getting tideous after starting a war with the TSF and also with the feeling that all my own ships are like practice targets for the enemy as they kill them so fast, that i wonder, why i took them with me in the first place grinding to get the money or ressources to get them just so that the enemy forces can obliterate them with their overpowering forces.... also the enemys are cheating while you are bound to your economics which are totally flawed as the overwatch functionality of solving conflicts is somehow a riddle to me how my fleet will most times loose against an enemy fleet because i don't have what ? i do not get it .... i had the maximus upgraded and it was killed by some random TSF fleet or the Outsider fleet .... it feels just like the game will punch you in the face more and more as you progress.... i am done ... also the constant crashes are not more tollerable ... i am done ... not one more hour is going into this game ... it is fun at its core but as you progress it gets more and more unfair and tedious with it's lack of QoL content...after you managed to create your trading fleet with escorts it gets killed over and over again ... your fleet is also to stupid not to fly to stations that are sieged ... it is such a waste of time ....
Unfun gameplay. Small ships circle you around so you spend a lot of time just turning trying to aim your weapons at a target. You are always outnumbered, so while you chase one ship others just blow you up. Every fight boils down to afterburning away from group, turning around, doing a pass, maybe doing some damage, then afterburning away again. You use shield recharge ability and just run from the fight while it's on cooldown. I started with a DLC that gives you different starting ships (Ashes) and those ships have 'auto aim' weapon projectiles. Problem with that is, the projectiles try to hit enemies into their rear, which means small ships just simply outrun the projectiles.... Upgraded into bigger ship in DLC, which was even worse, slower with lower weapon range, can't even chase after smaller ships, have to sit and wait for your 'secondary' weapons to come off cooldown, since they have longer range.
i really enjoyed this game, got my ~70 hours in the space of 2 weeks. looking forward to what's next by Iteration 11. Not sure what other people are reporting about it being broken, my experience with it was stable. Not always balanced and the UI was clunky but serviceable and fulfilled a nice area combining several genres into something fun but significantly more approachable and arcadey (in a good way) than something like X4.
just get this alongside vd2 rebalanced mod, best mod ever which brought back the vd1 ships, also made the dlc ships available for npcs and outsiders in sandbox ps:also make sure to use a ram cleaner program, cuz this game is quite a ram hog after playing a while
