No, this is a bad, broken game. I regret the time I have wasted learning, and playing, and more than anything, suffering through it. 1. Crashing. This game crashes, a lot. At first, it doesn't seem that bad, a crash every hour or two at most. With the autosaving that sets things back no more than 5 minutes, as missions and battles are short. But get farther in where you have maxed fleets, and crashes happen constantly, every other battle. These battles are long, and cleaning up fighters can often be a grind, then having the game crash to do it all over again. Or 20-30 minutes of tedious fleet and base management. Infuriating. 2. UI. What a mess, and an unintuitive one at that. Who thinks hotkeys like Shift+C to open coms to request docking with station is a good idea? But the issues go far beyond hotkeys. The UI is poorly designed, so selecting and moving ships, managing bases and fleets, setting up trade and mining, it all a huge pain to do. Even just finding where ships are in a battle is a challenge, as you get either massive icons covering up all the ships, or no icons and you have to find the dark smudge in the background... 3. Difficulty/scripting. So let me tell you a story, you take some missions from a station, they want you to go do some thing, and you fight a few pirate fighters. You manage to win, and get some credits, which allow you to upgrade your ship so you can win easier. Now you look at the next higher paying mission, defend the station from some pirates. It pays a bit more, so it's probably a bit harder, but you should be ready for it, right? How about no, it's borderline impossible, needing either an endgame fleet, or far higher tier of ship and upgrades to even stand a chance... This is the norm, for the entire game. Every story mission is a roll of the dice of being normal, boring, or absurdly impossible. It isn't a matter of coming back with better ships, the dev didn't want players to do that, so you are limited in how many and what kind you can bring, for some reason... Some missions are just strait up impossible, unless you use some tedious cheese strat. Talon in particular stands out, as the game wants you to fight an endgame super enemy, with a small force early in the game. 4. Overworld diplomacy and endgame enemy faction. Both of these, are incredibly unfun and tedious to deal with. Try and do anything clever, and the strongest faction starts a total war with you. Spend half an hour setting up trade ships and escorts, then they die and need to be rebuilt because a doomstack just happened to target them despite the trade ships having the highest level cloaking. Try to set up a supply for a base, well it takes time to commision and build the trade ship, then time to build the resource ship, then you have to position it to build away from other buildings, but also POIs that don't properly show their ring of influence, then you have to scroll through a list of 100 ships to set up the trade ship to have make use of it. Then after all that some enemy comes by and kills it all so you have to do it all again. Oh yea, and some of this can only be done inside a base, not even the same base, other parts need to be done outside a base. Now for the endgame enemy faction, they are not fun to fight. High damage, very tanky, immune to capture, immune to abilities, barriers block most weapons, can disable your ship for 90% of the battle, and pull your ships into their deathball from across the map, and they have hitscan weapons so no dodging allowed, or counterplay to any of these things! On the overworld they spawn massive fleets stronger than the player can make, faster than the player can, and don't have a base to attack or any way to fight back. Once they show up, nothing else in the overworld matters. They steamroll everything, your trade ships, your bases, and the other factions as well. No point in wasting time building anything, going to war to expand just accelerates their steamrolling of the map. 5. A 1 dev project. This game has a lot of ambition, fleets of ships ranging from fighter, up to capital ships. Battles have countless projectiles, missiles, and independantly targetting turrets. There are abilities, upgrades, fleet formations, reserve ships, commands, etc. Then there is the overworld, several different factions, with completely different ships, behaviors, trade and structures that the player can influence, build, and conquer. There is just so much, and that's the issue. It's too much for most small teams, let alone a single person to make and implement in a polished and coherent game. I don't want to finish the game, it's no longer fun. Thankfully I can't, I ran into a mission I don't know how to cheese. It spawns me 50km from the starting point, so a 10 minute journey just to start. Then the battle starts, where I have to protect a ship, that at one point has a bunch of enemies spawn on top of them. If a single one happens to target it, I don't have the dps to kill it in time, even with the strongest ship of the class I'm allowed to bring in this mission. There might be a way to cheese through this, but with the 10 minutes at the start to waste my time, it's just not worth trying. The only reason I got this far was the sunk cost fallacy.
fix you game or get it off steam and stop selling it.fix it.sad to see others have had the same experience.years ago these issues have persisted.99 hours and the game just became a bugged out mess.its crazy to look at reviews now only to see the same issue
Game crashed like crazy for me, almost constantly. Almost gave up on it. I don't know if it was the culprit or just coincidence, however I changed the game from full screen to windowed and suddenly it works fine with zero crashing... If you're a fan of games like Elite, X4, Starsector and other space sandboxes, I highly recommend Void Destroyer 2. It's pretty much like a streamlined X4 - Simple trading and mining with a big focus on combat. Ships have light customization, allowing you to streamline them towards specific purposes or expand their options for a more jack of all trades approach. Alot of fun for the price, glad I didn't give up on it.
I like what the game was aiming for, and it seems to have been made by a dedicated team. It is sort of a more chill/lite version of X4. However, there are some serious issues with the game that mean that I cannot recommend it. If they could be fixed, then the game would be decent. The game has serious instability. Luckily autosaves are frequent, so you usually don't lose much progress. But when it crashes at the end of a big fight that may have taken over 30 minutes that is very frustrating. The "tactical" screen is abysmal, it has zooming, panning/rotating and sensitivity issues. Homeworld 1 figured out how handle commanding units in 3D 25years ago, so I'm not sure why devs struggle to replicate it. The automatic fleet combat is core to the endgame, but the calculations are not explained, so getting fleet composition correct is a guessing game.
keeps crashing constantly cant be arsed anymore uninstalled it, was having so much fun too.. 7 times crashed when im trying to capture brig destroyer in baggers base. sorry but i wouldn't advise buying it in this sorry arse state constant crashing PC specs AMD ryzen 5 5600 32g ram RTX3060 hardly a crap PC... it should handle this game perfectly fine but no.. CONSTANT crashing
Is this the definitive 4X and Dogfight combination space game? Not quite. But for 8 Euros its a fun game to sink a few hours into. The Ships control well, and especially flying smaller craft is fun - dodging around larger ship's firing arcs to get into range. Larger ships move lumberingly, as you would expect, and i can see how some players would prefer piloting a slow but powerful ship instead as well. Overall, having played a bunch of similar games, i'm impressed at how intuitive and 'correct' flying a ship in VD2 feels compared to those other titles. I really like the way the ships and stations look in game, as well as the bullets and missiles. In larger engagements, it can get a little crowded of course, but i don't see a way around that either. I've seen other reviews critisising the look of the game though, so i guess the graphics are very subjective. Just based on those two things alone, this game is worth giving a try. The best part of this game IMO is flying around with a small group of smaller ships, and if that's all you're looking for, here you go! Other than that however.... The quests are passable. Some are better than others, but mostly it comes down to 'fly here, destroy this', which isn't revolutionary, but, well, passable. The story is similar. Some small amount of exploration, but mostly 'fly here, fight this fleet'. The issue here is that there is no real indication of how difficult the encounters are before you start them - and taking the 'recommended' amount of ships will usually leave you way outgunned. The solution here is to always be over-prepared, and to amass one massive fleet to steamroll every story quest, which leads to the next issue: Crashes and Lags. The game auto-saves very often, which at least allows you to get back to the crash point quickly, but considering a main draw of the game is getting a large fleet together, that part is very very unstable. Some ship types are especially prone to crashing the game, which can lead to repeating the same fight several times to try and get lucky. The fleet portion of the game generally feels a little underdeveloped. Controlling fleets remotely works alright, but for some reason cant be done everywhere, requiring you to dock somewhere first. Managing ship types in fleets is a massive pain, and managing stations is even worse. Its a shame then that the chaos in large battles as well as the crashing incentivises using these mechanics more and more as the game goes on. The UI is generally not great either. Even so, give it a try - I still feel like the flight sim alone is worth the price of admission, and if you can stand the rest, that's just bonus on top.
The idea of the game is amazing. Rts and a space flight sim with trade and fleet management all in one. But the problem comes down to 2 things. 1st is the game starts to bug out as you get further into it, and 2nd the developer moved on to a new game and looks like it won't be getting updates anymore. I love the game play and the scale but it gets to the point where it starts crashing multiple times in a play session and it takes the fun out of it.
No idea how this even is considered a game. No idea how to do anything. No instructions. Just start in the middle of a fight, no ability to control my ship. Try to do anything, everything slows down, nothing works. Keybinds don't really seem to do anything. How is this even a game?
very hard in the late game but if you just use your brain you will do ok. epic fleet battles all you need
The game has great concept. I like first half of the game, it is exactly what I was looking for. Combat is amazing, missions are nice and later wars against factions are great fun. Ship mode graphics are very crisp. I like the style, although it is clearly product of a small budget. Up to this point, it is great game, challenging, but fun. Sure, it crashes every 2 hours randomly, but whatever. I can live with that. But at the mid or end of the main story, it is clear that the developer had little to no resources for actually finishing, polishing and balancing the game. I get it. I bought the game at full price for 9 euro, which means he gets maybe 5. And I suspect majority of purchases are during sales, which makes his revenue (not profit) in range 1-2 euro per copy. I pity him for this, he deserves more money for such great game, but it is what it is. I think the main problem is there are too many systems that he could not possibly balance or even deprecate as non-functional concept. And this is my main problem. For instance the overworld combat. I have no idea about how it is implemented internally, but from what I experienced there is insane discrepancy between ship combat and overworld combat. At least when fighting Outsiders - the endgame faction. There are main story missions where you need to destroy Outsider fleet with yours of maybe 1.5x size of the enemy's. You have a destroyer, they have a destroyer. And you win quite easily. It is challenging, sure, it may take few attempts before you realize their weapons are strong, but you win with 2/3 or 1/2 of your fleet left. But when fights are conducted in overworld mode, you will just lose even with bigger fleet. And I am not talking like 2x size fleet. I understand that enemy ships are stronger. But when they have 30 ships, where only 1 is a destroyer, their fleet should be obliterated against your 30 destroyers, 40 frigates and 50 corvettes. Just because the amount of time and resources to acquire this fleet is considerably higher. And with this you fully arrive to non-balanced semi-finished part of the game. These overworld results are not consistent for some reason. Because sometimes you just win with very little casualities. I have no idea why, it may very well be a bug. So sure, then you say "ok, lets bruteforce it" and you will just sit in your base and keep spamming ships and watching the other factions to lose horribly against Outsiders. Then you face the issue of UI that is well-polished for first part of the game (it is quite immersive), but is very annoying in lategame, when you play the game more like an RTS. But maybe it is intended. Maybe at this point such a game is lost strategically and I should start playing from scratch. But I think it is just lack of game polish and balance in lategame area. Understandable due to above reasons, but it's annoying nevertheless.
