Vile
A brutal and bloody top-down action roguelite with a stylish and classic horror theme going for it, Vile is a Gothic Victorian-era ARPG of its own kind with a beautifully detailed art style and some wonderfully memorable character design. A randomized dungeon crawler of arcade-y hack'n'slash action and a wealth of progression to work through behind each unique character. The style here is one that will draw in fans of old dark dungeon crawlers like Diablo, and music reminiscent of macabre epics like Castlevania and its dark tension. Though it's in Early Access, Vile is looking like a promising offering for procedural dungeon crawling addicts of the retro variety, its already so promising, so sweet and eventually satisfying. First; I absolutely love the character selection in Vile, already rich with horror lore to start off and so many locked away options promising even more iconic and universal horror symbols. Initially starting with a Vampire Hunter D or Van Helsing sort of black-cloaked Demon Hunter, a standard sort of Diablo-esque Huntress, and my personal favorite of the three starters; A hulking Frankenstein's Monster sort of a beast dude complete with lobotomy stitches. There's already many noticable references and influences seen here from classic Horror cinema and literature, and without spoiling it the unlockable characters are somehow even cooler than the starters.
A Darker Sort of Procedural ARPG
The charmingly Goth DIY pixel-art shouldn't catch you off guard, as anyone can clearly see from the trailers the actual combat here in Vile is absolutely slick and well-done. Mostly arcade-y, very fast and twitch-y at it's core but not without a whole lot of added tactical choice with each new gained weapon or skill. Each playable character has their own specific main weapon that you'll soon learn to love if you want to make it through alive, but the real saving grace between shots is the secondary weapons you'll be finding and swapping through in these environments of haunted forests, crumbling castles, and eventually the very pits of Hell itself. Satisfying and game-changing as these obtainable secondary weapons and side-arms may be, their ammo is very limited and you'll need to count on the resources dropped by enemies and crates to replenish the very low supply. This takes away some of the satisfaction that could be had with Vile, as every time I was excited to find a new weapon I was bummed to run short before I could mow down my foes appropriately. Again, this is an area of the game that could use a little "buffing" so-to-speak to give the player more of a feeling of heroism and power. Each character features their own permanent skill tree that grows as you collect souls throughout each run, and the more you die the stronger you get for the next time. Adding skills into the three different categories; Knowledge traits raise your magic and MP usage abilities, Vigor increases your strength through HP and vitality giving you longer lasting power, and Endurance raises your stamina capabilities letting you use your abilities more frequently and ultimately last through the dungeons longer. These options along with the robust choice of characters opens up a whole number of doors of possibility for players to experiment and tailor their favorite personality to their preferred playstyle. Play it tanky and go all out with vitality or be an explosive glass cannon with an insanely high amount of stamina, as with any good ARPG the choice to build how you want is yours. As addictive as the traditional character progression system here is, the skill tree can be a bit tedious to work through and the requirements to advance take a bit more grinding through repeated short runs before you become strong enough to really get anywhere. I feel like letting the player access the more empowering skills that embolden and make you feel like a badass earlier on would benefit the pacing of the game, as no one likes to grind through the first few floors tens of times before they get the necessary skills to feel powerful at all. If you want an addictive and long progression experience you'll be drawn in here, as there isn't much in the way of instant gratification. When it gets there, though, it really gets there. You do get there, eventually. With tons of collected Spirits from each run poured into the expanding skill trees, your ability to find ammo boxes increases as does the limit, your health rises, and your stamina capacity gives you more room to really let it out and cause some bloody havoc. It just takes a little bit long to get to the awesome bits but that's what Early Access is for and with a tad bit of tweaking this already awesome action-focused roguelite could be a satisfying as all hell romp from the get-go, because again it definitely does get there. For some this sense of long progression will just add to the RPG satisfaction of having a strong bond and connection with your chosen heroes, but for me a game with as fast-paced, brutal and arcade-heavy of a combat system should succeed in making you feel like a total powerhouse from early on. The combat in Vile feels so good eventually, and I just wanted to let loose right from the get-go. Perhaps a seperate mode for speed-demon arcade junkies like myself to jump in with all of the perks?
Final Thought
Fans of top-down progression heavy roguelites like Hero Siege or the more recent Wayward Souls are going to want to check this one out, the different categories of skill trees to work through on each character are certainly a grind but they offer a whole lot of content for ARPG junkies. The real draw to Vile is its outstanding and undeniably dark and Gothic overtones both in character design and world building. The composition of the soundtrack is haunting and chilling in Castlevania-ish ways, and the artwork is a real treat for fans of classic dark fantasy designs. I'm super excited to see where this goes, as its my new go-to coffee-break ARPG and roguelite and it can only get better. This game takes a lot of things from other games and crafts it into something different. Main things I liked. + I love how talents reward the player's time. I really hate it when you have to start over and have gained NOTHING. + Bosses are fun and don't rely on gimmicks or bullet-hell patterns so far + Combat is satisfying with decisions that can be made in choosing what you want to use and when. + Amazing soundtrack + The quest things that appears differently is interesting to way to add replay value. Sometimes the dungeon is fast and sometimes slower. Things I want to see. - Maybe more guns and etc. - Maybe a boss challenge mode or new game + Game feels really good even though it is in Early Access.
Somekind of a first review.Allright rogue-fans here is a brandnew game from a new company called ARDENTSQUID with their game VILE.If you like Nuclear Throne,Dungeon Souls or Deathstate this is for you. Not only demons are attacking you also mushrooms(yeah grim looking mushrooms!). Little worms too.Enemys are fast, but game feels for me right perfect not too easy not too hard. I played my first 1,8 hours so im just in the beginning.VILE costs in Europe 8,19 Euro in EA,a nice price for such a likeable game. Until now I didnt found any bugs I guess, game runs flawless as far I can see on my Computer. Vile could be successfull but this depends also from the purchases. I recommend this game to all my Steam-Chummers and ppl who loves rogue/likes/lites.

Pretty decent visual assets, otherwise incredibly generic and subpar when compared to any game it is clearly inspired by. Weapons and equipment are boring. Map generation and objectives are extremely simplistic and repetitive. Enemy's and combat, outside of bosses, are very basic. In general outside of the art assets, every other aspect of the game feels like it is placeholder and early access. For under 15$ you can buy/play any of these games instead, and you should. The Binding of Isaac Dead Cells Downwell Enter the Gungeon Hades Monolith Nuclear Throne Spirits Abyss Straimium Immortality
Vile is not really unique in the genre of roguelikes but it has its own charm that sets it apart. The controls are solid and the mechanics are fleshed out. What stands out most is the art style and the characters. Each character is a classic horror trope (ranging from generic vampire hunter all the way up to werewolf and Death himself) but each one is done creatively with different enough mechanics to merit a playthrough of each one just to see what play style fits you best. Personally, I preferred the huntress character until I was finally able to unlock death's emissary (which is the final character you encounter). The enemies and levels are challenging without being infuriating. The souls you collect during a run are used to buy upgrades that carry over to all subsequent runs and the tech tree means that you just need a few more souls to give you the edge you need to beat a level. Bonus points for a developer that is super responsive to feedback. I've been playing this game since early access and I encountered some bugs after 1.0 release. I told the dev about it and they did several updates to the game until they were able to fix the bugs I was encountering. I'm proud to have been able to assist them with polishing the final product. If the art style from the trailer speaks to you and you enjoy this kind of top down shooter/roguelike then I say definitely give Vile a chance. You won't be disappointed.
It's a GREAT game to play when you're bored or just want some not-easy but not-hard fun ^_^! The two player edition is even fun too so I HIGHLY recommend for any one that reads this to buy this game! It'll be worth it I promise ^_^
Fun but gets repetitive real fast. I've played the first area for hours building souls to increase stats & I'm now ready to blow my brains out. The graphics are very plain, the addition of more detail & uniqueness to the level design would definitely take away from how fast this game gets boring. I can't force myself to play anymore for now but if the devs do some more work on it I would visit it again.
6/10 Asking price is a joke.
Not terribly satisfying combat, paired with character development that is slow and grindy. The level generator lacks any sort of interesting layouts, to the extent that it would probably be more fun to play the same hand made level over and over again. Some of the weapon and item drops are moderately interesting, but it's definitely not up to nuclear throne level.
