A Decade of Exam Struggles, One Day of Success Leaves a Lingering Bittersweetness—"Who knew that Fan Jin’s triumphant exam pass was the very genesis of China’s earliest 'onshore literature'?"
As the Steam review section fills with echoes of “after playing, I finally understand the pain of civil servants-to-be,” this 16‑bit pixel reimagining of a classic has ripped open the shared spiritual creases of intellectuals across time. The developers, with trembling animated fingers, abruptly contorted dialogue boxes, and an accelerating, frenzied clapper sound, have transformed the literary void of “madness upon success” into a torrent of audiovisual expression. Anchored by a handkerchief drifting toward 2025, the game interweaves a reverence for the imperial examination with the modern undercurrent of “onshore anxiety.” Those imbalanced survival mechanics (chopping wood 20 times to trade for one copy of the Four Books) and the disjointed “gold miner” mini-game during the palace exam stage serve as absurd footnotes in the fortress of an entrenched system—we mock Fan Jin’s mechanical toil in the exam game, even as we endlessly repeat the modern cycle of chopping wood and copying texts in the novice village. This pixelated bronze mirror may never have honed a sharp edge, yet it reflects a far more glaring malady of civilization: the vanity of scholar banners transformed from dilapidated wooden signs to gilded plaques, the vicissitudes of officialdom compressed into five hours of program lag, and even the NPCs frozen into static Ming-dynasty street scenes—all narrating the relentless struggle between an independent team and the weight of history. When Fan Jin, resigning from his post, releases that handkerchief past the screens of thrice-tested postgraduate hopefuls, and when idealists championing “exam reform” collapse before the 2048 bureaucratic puzzle, the game has quietly accomplished the ultimate deconstruction of “onshore-ism.”
Perhaps, as one hot comment put it, we have never escaped Fan Jin’s fated script—we have merely exchanged our obsession with “passing the exam” for new imperial trials: civil service tests, house-buying, and coveted school districts, continuing to write an unfinished Records of the Scholars within Steam’s achievement system.
