Follow my curator page for more recommendations!
I liked the idea of this game and was looking forward to playing it, but after giving it multiple tries I've decided to refund. It's just not a very fun twin-stick shooter. It should be mentioned that I only played this solo. It feels like the game was designed with co-op in mind, but the only option is local, no online support, so I couldn't try it. There's some strange design choices that really kill the fun, like how there's no way to gain back health when you're guaranteed to take at least a few hits every level. There's a "Transfusion" life steal perk but it doesn't seem to work at all, I was never regaining health when killing enemies. There are abilities that should help with not taking hits, like the shield and jump/slam attack, but you can only use them 2-3 times before you're completely out of energy, and energy doesn't automatically regenerate, you have to kill llamas with car explosions to get more, or does it just have a random chance to drop from kills? I couldn't tell, but either way it takes too long to get energy back for how fast it can be used up. It's also a pretty buggy game. The tutorial is broken, you can't complete it. I found mentions of this years ago in the forum but it was never fixed. You're also supposed to get a challenge in each level, which when completed gives you a perk (the only way to get perks), but they never show up. In my handful of runs, I've never gotten a challenge or perk past the very first one. On top of that, there's an insane amount of chromatic aberration around the whole screen, it was a major eyestrain. It feels like the game is close to being a fun twin-stick shooter, but the issues mentioned above mean I don't feel that I can recommend this game. There are many other better options in this genre.
Bought this on sale for about 7 bucks, but even that seems too much for what this is. This plays like it should be on an app store, since it plays closer to those than anything good on the Steam store. You get a couple weapons, but from what I can tell, it's just about killing llamas. The jokes aren't funny. They're stupid and you're smacked in the face immediately with political crap. I'm not here for that. The presentation is not particularly enticing and the couple minutes of gameplay is pathetic. Overall, it's not a bad game, it just needs a lot more polish. Re-do the mechs so that they can walk over stuff like cars and smaller stuff, add more variety to the gameplay other than just running around shooting llamas, and take out the stupid jokes, all of 'em. Matter of fact, take out the entire expository intro and just say, "You'll be killing llamas." Also decrease the price by more than half. Fourteen dollars for this is quite excessive for what it is.
VALA is just really half-baked, like someone set out to make a certain kind of game but doesn't really like those or know why they are fun. They seem to think the llama thing can just stand in for everything else that makes the game experience actually good, and basically that the game is just a goof you can toss some friends into, rather than something that rewards you for trying to engage with it. It's not outright terrible. It just doesn't bring anything to the table. You endlessly kite big swarms of samey enemies (you'll be shocked when late game reveals the addition of spitting and exploding enemies) with random drop guns and random drop upgrades, both of which feel like they ran out of ideas a little early. There are a bunch of on-reload triggers from upgrades (significantly more than the small pool of upgrades warrants), but they only trigger if you just run the magazine out and it reloads on its own. If you actually engage with the action and try to reload yourself, you block all those effects. Bad use of controller vibration. Just pulses with every shot fired, even though that's really obnoxious and completely unhelpful. At least there's an option to disable vibration. Controller cannot exit the game. No aim reticle for controller, and one of the achievements inexplicably wants you to clear zones without missing a single shot, which really just doesn't work with the game. Sometimes llamas just get erased as they come on screen and you can't progress from the zone, so you have to kill yourself. A lot of llama puns, but mostly the bad kind of puns, and they are poorly acted, which kind of makes them more grating. Weird to be so committed to making puns, but not at all selling the delivery. Single energy bar for dashes, shield, and your very awkward AoE stomp, all of which take big chunks of energy that only refills on pickups that don't even drop when you're full, so you have to throw out energy to get energy dropping, and the whole thing just feels clunky and overly restrictive where you want it to feel fun. It also means that when you are in trouble, your tools actually get worse, because drops don't keep up with any of those abilities if you actually need them, and then you have all the pointless walking you need to do after rooms, which you can't accelerate by dashing unless you just want to start the next room with a handicap, because of course your energy doesn't simply refresh while there are no enemies in the room to fight. You have a special slot that can only hold one single-use consumable, which means you don't even have one of your buttons until one randomly drops, and if you use it, you're back to waiting for another drop. Many of the consumables aren't even very useful, so it's just annoying deciding when to throw one out to boost the fight. You start runs with a pair of weapons based on which zone you pick (pistols, machine guns, shotguns). Pistol start may be only for the first area, but it still sucks to play with basic pistols. No option to change your starting weapons, just drop unlocks, but it's enough to want to be past the first area so you never have to start runs with just pistols again. Would have been really helpful to offer cross-run progression to improve early runs and fill in some obvious cracks (like abilities/dashing/consumable/base pistol level), but everything is just unlocks from a fixed start--and yet this is a perfect example of how unlock-only progression can still very clearly be power progression, because more unlocks actually does mean more drops here, not just better and more effective drops/options. You're meant to slog through a dull early game to eventually have a game that maybe throws enough in to be considered a basic twin-stick swarm roguelite with no significant interest, which takes rather a surprising number of hours for a one-note game. Annoying tasks you have to do to get upgrade unlocks, but they come in sequence, so you just sit on bad ones until you get the right combination of random events to let you progress (and some require very specific drops you can go hours without lining up, which really drags). Also, the game constantly reminds/insults you for not finishing a task yet, because of course it does. Clearing an area on lower difficulty only unlocks the next area on that difficulty, which kind of sticks you playing low level to clear tasks so you can unlock the tools to properly play the normal difficulty, since you can only get ten tasks per area. Weapon unlocks come by simply accumulating kills with the most recent unlock in a weapon's group. No matter how bad it is. So you often have to decide between useful weapons that help and weapons that allow progress and need to accumulate kills. It's amazing they ever thought they could ask $15 for this. Goes on sale for $3 now and then, but even then, you're going to ask yourself why you do this when you have better twin-stick games to play, even by the lowest standards.
Nicht die Zeit wert. Extrem langweiliges Top-Down Gameplay.
To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of twin stick shooters, but this does nothing for me. The comedy is enjoyable, but it can only carry a game so far. Maybe if i had a single satisfying weapon i would enjoy it more.
It's not bad. A fun little Rogue-Lite top-down shooter. Gameplay is serviceable. The cutscene at the start is absolute cringe, but I think that's the point. My problem is that in a world with so many amazing games at the sub 20 dollar price point offering fantastic replay value (Slay the Spire and Dungreed come to mind) it's hard to say that I would recommend this game. There are just a lot of better games to spend 13-20 bucks on. That's less a knock on these devs and their product and more a statement of how great current indie games have been. Additionally, that's coming from someone who used to think Indie devs were eroding the expected quality of products. Btw, Steam, Give us a judge based on your own taste in games button. I like Rogue-Like's but am meh on top-down-shooters. If you're super into top-down shooters this might be your jam.
It's fun for a bit, but it doesn't have the depth to hold your attention. I understand why the creators opted for local-only multiplayer, but I think it does the game a massive disservice. My friends and I use games to stay connected since we don't have the time we used to to get together. When we do get together, things like this are far down on the list of how we want to spend our time. Even as someone that followed this game during its development I can't recommend it if it doesn't have an online multiplayer.
This game is a lot of fun. The controls are smooth, the weapons are unique and interesting and the game's writing is full of good humor. I just wish it had online multiplayer so I could more easily play with my friends.
