Afterburner but semi-realistic gameplay, You get two air craft, You choose 4 weapons. After a wave part of your shields and weapons resupply, rinse and repeat. Very simple gameplay, think ace combat for console. Works using xbox one controller windows 11. It takes time to set up your controller. It runs at 60fps kinda low for me but it works. cheap thrill flight combat sim. got for less than 1 dollar. I learnt to fly in less than 2 seconds and shoot expensive planes without going to flight school haha suckers. Time to re watch TOPGUN the movie haha.

Vertical Strike Endless Challenge, developed by Project ICKX and published by PLAYISM, is a compact arcade-style flight combat game that focuses on delivering quick, intense dogfighting sessions rather than large-scale campaigns or deep simulation systems. Released on Steam in 2017, the game presents itself as a straightforward aerial action experience designed to be easy to pick up and playable in short bursts. Its structure reflects a philosophy often seen in smaller indie action titles: minimal setup, immediate gameplay, and a focus on pure mechanical skill. Instead of building a long narrative or complex progression system, the game drops players straight into the cockpit of a modern fighter jet and challenges them to survive increasingly dangerous waves of enemies in a relentless sky battle. The central gameplay loop revolves around wave-based combat where players must destroy endless incoming enemy forces. Rather than progressing through story missions, the challenge escalates gradually as more hostile aircraft and military targets enter the battlefield. Each wave becomes progressively more chaotic, forcing players to constantly maneuver through incoming missiles, gunfire, and enemy formations. Success depends heavily on situational awareness and quick reflexes, as opponents attack from all directions in fully three-dimensional airspace. The pacing is deliberately fast, creating a sense of urgency and adrenaline that mirrors classic arcade shooters while still maintaining the feel of piloting a fighter jet. The endless structure also encourages players to chase higher scores and longer survival times, turning each session into a personal challenge to improve performance. A defining mechanic in Vertical Strike Endless Challenge is its emphasis on extreme maneuverability. Players can disable the aircraft’s Alpha Limiter, unlocking advanced flight behaviors that allow the jet to perform dramatic high-angle turns and aggressive aerial maneuvers. With this system active, the aircraft can execute impressive post-stall movements and sharp directional changes that would normally be restricted in traditional flight models. This design choice adds a layer of skill and experimentation, as players who master these maneuvers gain a major advantage during intense dogfights. Skilled pilots can weave through enemy formations, dodge missiles at the last second, and quickly reposition themselves for counterattacks, creating moments of thrilling aerial acrobatics. The game features two primary arcade modes that provide different combat scenarios. In Anti-Air mode, players focus on classic aerial dogfights, shooting down waves of enemy fighters while avoiding missile locks and machine gun fire. Anti-Ship mode shifts the focus toward attacking naval fleets, requiring players to dive toward enemy vessels and avoid heavy anti-aircraft artillery from below. While both modes share the same core mechanics, the change in targets slightly alters the pacing and tactical approach. Attacking ships demands careful timing and positioning to avoid defensive fire, while air-to-air combat emphasizes rapid movement and precise targeting of fast-moving enemies. These variations add some diversity to the experience, though the overall structure remains centered on survival against endless waves. Weapon systems play a crucial role in combat strategy. Players can equip a variety of armaments, including homing missiles, rockets, bombs, and standard machine guns. Missiles provide a powerful way to eliminate enemies quickly, especially when facing large groups of aircraft, while guns are useful for conserving ammunition and finishing off damaged opponents. Balancing weapon usage becomes increasingly important as waves progress and enemies grow tougher. Choosing the right moment to unleash heavy firepower can determine whether a player survives the next wave or is overwhelmed by incoming threats. This balance between firepower management and maneuverability keeps the gameplay engaging even though the overall mechanics remain relatively simple. Visually, the game adopts a modest presentation that prioritizes clarity and performance over graphical spectacle. Aircraft models are functional and recognizable, and the sky-focused environments keep attention on the action rather than environmental detail. The world below the battlefield often appears distant or minimal, serving primarily as a backdrop while players concentrate on aerial combat. While the graphics lack the cinematic scale of larger flight combat games, the simplicity ensures that the screen remains readable even during chaotic dogfights filled with missiles and enemy fighters. This minimalistic approach fits well with the game’s arcade roots, emphasizing speed and responsiveness over visual complexity. The audio design and pacing reinforce the game’s arcade identity. Combat unfolds rapidly, with explosions, missile launches, and engine roars creating a constant sense of motion. Each session typically lasts only a few minutes before the difficulty escalates to overwhelming levels, making the game particularly suited for quick play sessions. This structure encourages players to return repeatedly, attempting to beat their previous score or survive just a little longer. Score tracking and global leaderboard sharing provide additional motivation, allowing players to compare their performance with others and chase higher rankings. Despite its entertaining mechanics, Vertical Strike Endless Challenge does have noticeable limitations. The amount of content is relatively small, with only a couple of aircraft available and limited gameplay modes. Enemy variety is also somewhat restricted, as later waves tend to introduce stronger versions of the same opponents rather than entirely new enemy types. Without a campaign mode, customization system, or long-term progression mechanics, the game relies almost entirely on the intrinsic enjoyment of its flight controls and score-based challenges. For players who prefer deeper systems or narrative context, the experience may feel somewhat repetitive after extended play sessions. Even with these shortcomings, the game succeeds at delivering exactly what it promises: a quick, accessible burst of aerial combat. Its tight controls, responsive flight mechanics, and escalating difficulty create an experience that captures the excitement of dogfighting without overwhelming players with complicated systems. For those who enjoy arcade flight action or simply want a game that delivers fast aerial battles in short sessions, it offers a satisfying and focused experience. While it may not rival larger flight combat franchises in scale or depth, it provides a fun and skill-driven challenge that highlights the thrill of mastering high-speed aerial maneuvers. Rating: 7/10
