Nelo is the lightning fast, out of this world, genre-blending, bullet-hell, character-action epic meticulously crafted by the loving couple at Magic & Mirrors.

Great Vision, poor execution, and abandonded by the developers.
I backed this game on Kickstarter in 2016. As of 2021 it's still an incomplete buggy mess. As of 2024 there hasn't been a single update since I wrote this review.
A surprisingly solid start, for a DEEPLY Early Access game, which led to some of the most frustrating controls, pedantic, boring combat, with EXCEPTIONALLY spongy enemies who are thrown at the player in absolute DROVES. It has serviceable mechanics, which are barely explained. It has an interesting world, which is not at all explained. It has an odd, TPS / Eagle-Eye Bullet Hell feel, but it doesn't really fit either of those very well. Your guns will fill the vast majority of your screen at ALL times, you have no way to prevent picking up new guns, There is a whole ass item-pick-up mode which, by the halfway point of the game, is used an absolutely minor amount (maybe 4 times? 1 in one mission, and the other 3 times in another mission) Sort-of-spoilers, you end up playing as Not-Nelo, and there is absolutely no functional difference between Not Nelo and Nelo, they even look 95% the same, except Not-Nelo has more blade-like things on his head. Oh, and least I forget, it has ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ jumping puzzles, which are INSANELY hard with the game's utterly, and entirely excessive Momentum System, which automatically engages upon a jump, so finesse is long-the-♥♥♥♥-extinct. The Aim-Mode (Aim-Down-Sights) is the most impossibly important function in the universe if you are going to use your long-range weaponry at all. Not because it slows down time, but because they implemented the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 'Hip-Fire-Is-So-Inaccurate-Its-Impossible-To-Use' trope as everything else. You have 50k Ammo, but your guns overheat impossibly fast, and require an unseemly amount of time to cooldown. One of the few good things is that the Player's Combos cannot be interrupted. They are just weaker than a slap to the face from a duck-feather, have virtually no impact (on RECRUIT DIFFICULTY (easiest)) This game is not a good Bullet Hell. This game is not a good Style-Slasher (Devil May Cry Series / DMC: Devil May Cry). This game is not a good Third-Person Shooter. This game is not a good Platformer. As of writing this, 11/6/2022, this game is a worrying letdown of some EXCEPTIONAL potential, which CAN be seen in ALL of those aspects, but it needs to embrace ONE of those (Maybe 2, if it were to go ThirdPerson Shooter / Bullet Hell), but the extremely Tanky Enemies introduced with Not-Nelo's first series of chapters, the worryingly weak, easy to break, and impossible to continue, combo system, means the game just falls flat. Hard. Give it time, dear reader. Maybe me and you both will be surprised at the game's progress in a few years. But as of now, this game is not worth your money. Go try Hades if you want a Hard, pseudo-bullet-hell experience. Go play Lost Planet for a good Third Person Shooter. Go replay the Devil May Cry series for good Style Brawlers (or whatever they are called). You truly do not want this amalgamation. Not yet.

Zero communication from the developers since 2021. Yes, I know people are going to say "well, if you check Twitter" or "go on their Discord", but I should not have to go on a 3rd party site to get news on a game. I understand they were a 2-person studio and that life happens, but some kind of communication here would be appreciated. Communication gripes aside, the game does answer the question of "how fast is too fast". Feels like Warframe or Vanquish with the speed turned way up, and it's not always clear why certain moves do not trigger. It's interesting, but it needs a lot of work it's probably never going to get.
Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access? “At the date of the Early Access Release we have about 90 percent of the game's content made. We are now in the process of assembling everything together and polishing. Only the first Act of the campaign and some Endurance Maps will be available near the Early Access Release as they are the most complete. We will let everyone know when we have a strong ETA on a vanilla release.” 90% done but missing the 10% for 8 years
