Vampiro 😁👍

I want to give Vampyr a mixed review, because there's a lot I like, and a lot that I don't like. Off the bat, the setting is just spectacular - not just for a vampire game, but for games in general. Victorian-ish London is beautiful, and the atmosphere oozes moody gothic vibes. The story is quite good (of course, given that it's made by DONTNOD), and the sheer amount of dialogue and expose is overwhelming (in a good way). I'll admit that for certain characters, I just couldn't be bothered to care and ended up skipping some of the basic dialogue ("Tell me about your life in London" x55 times), but the real sauce is in the character relationships. There are tons of mini-stories and narrative arcs that span across characters, and you really get a sense of how the world feels alive. The narrative doesn't just go the normal vampire route of "find the high society and engage in bloodsucking hell yeah", but instead blends science and folklore really well. The combat is good, but only after you're able to sink your teeth (pun intended) into the skill tree. By using just basic / low tier weapons and one vampiric ability, you won't get far. Not to mention, the level gating at the beginning really draws out every fight, making it incredibly tedious, as the XP you get for killing enemies is about 5 points. Per enemy. Yep. The majority of experience comes from either embracing citizens or completing quests. But once you've levelled up your stamina and start to understand the dance between Dr. Reid and the enemies, it starts to set into rhythm and becomes quite fun. Now for the bad. The level and world design is absolutely terrible. The game feels like a 3D metroidvania without the allure of an actual metroidvania. There's no fast travelling in the city of London, and the game constantly forces you to go back and forth between the four different districts - for both main and side quests. And with several locked doors or inaccessible "teleport" areas until you progress in the story, you find yourself wasting so much time running back and forth, not to mention getting into fights constantly as DONTNOD took a souls-like approach to respawning enemies. Except, instead of them respawning when you rest, they come right back from the dead a few minutes after you've slain them. And that leads into the other terrible part of the game - the pacing. As you're going through the campaign, it very rapidly bogs down and turns into a series of "go here and look at this" type of quests, all while coercing you to run around with the pitiable amount of stamina you have (at least, at the beginning). The narrative, while good, gets lost just like you will, running around trying to find out how to get to a street that's locked behind multiple gates - most of which you have to open from the other side - which you can't do until you progress further. Personally, I think the game is good, but it loses steam quick and becomes tough to enjoy if you're in it for the campaign. If fighting's your thing, then this is a great game to play.
Still looks great in 2026. The characters and the vast majority of the dialogue are well written. The story is interesting and includes some meaningful choices. The game's unique aspect is that you need to strategize who to kill, and when to kill them in order to gain the most experience or avoid killing altogether if you want to be a good vampire. 8/10
One of those games that surprises you, positively. The combat may be a bit janky but not to the degree that some say, the story, atmosphere makes up for what it lacks in other departments.
