Good story, interesting investigation and character interaction options. As much as Hunter investigtation as it is Vampire story.
I'm a huge Vampire: The Masquerade (and World of Darkness) super fan. Out For Blood definitely scratches the itch of playing a Hunter in the universe, but for better or worse it is incredibly derivative of Stephen King's Salem's Lot. The setting and premise is quite generic, but the characters themselves are all well-written and really likeable. A single run is about 4-5 hours, and there is plenty of replayability. Easily worth the full price—Some of Jim Dattilo's best work.
It's a fun and engaging game that makes you feel a part of a fun, albeit tense and magical world - you get to make decisions that feel like they matter which is what separates the game from just reading a story, and that's where it succeeds
Even if I enjoyed some of the characters, especially the fact Adam is a romanceable disabled person (and well written) I disliked very much the whole game. It's weird to use, I don't understand how the story goes, it didn't grab my attention. Sorry to say I'd give it a 5/10 at best.
Out for Blood is a pretty great story straddling the line between Vampire the Masquerade and Hunter the Reckoning. Playing as a normal person coming to a small town after your grandfather passed away to put his affairs in order is a pretty good setup (which incidentally made me think of the opening to Stardew Valley) and it is difficult to get the "small town with more going on beneath the cozy exterior" wrong, as it's an excellent trope for a story like this. And it very quickly becomes apparent that there is a lot more going on than meets the eye. Compared to Night Road, Out for Blood has a slower pace, which I think works well for it. The character progression is slower and feels more deliberate, since this time you're just a human and not a vampire, meaning you have to think more carefully about how you spend your XP. The choices also felt a lot more meaningful than they did in Night Road, which I think is due to a smaller, more personal scale to the story. Having said that, the one major gripe I have with it is the ending. As with Night Road, there are multiple endings, though it's much less obvious which one you're on track for, and the ending I ended up getting
being kidnapped by the FBI and put in "witness protection"
felt unsatisfying and like a complete Deus Ex Machina. I hope the other endings are better than this, though I'll admit, to me personally, that bar is not set very high. In conclusion, if you enjoyed Night Road, and don't mind seeing the world of Vampire from the other side of the Masquerade, you'll probably enjoy Out for Blood too.
Vampire: The Masquerade — Out for Blood is an text-based urban dark fantasy thriller adventure based on the popular World of Darkness franchise of tabletop role-playing games. in Out for Blood, you create and portray the grandchild of an ill-fated Hunter. Your character inherits their grandparent's small-town business in Chicago, Illinois and is tasked with resolving an ongoing turf war between local vampires hiding in town whilst, at the same time, staying out of trouble and out of debt. With this premise in mind, this game honestly plays more like a Hunter: The Reckoning chronicle than a Vampire: The Masquerade game, especially since your character starts out as a mortal. Furthermore, depending on how well you develop and navigate your character, you can spare them from being embraced into vampirism. As an example, during my initial playthrough of this game, I developed and portrayed a kind-hearted and down-to-earth thrift store owner with high Composure, Intelligence and Resolve. Though my character started out as a soft-hearted outsider, I ultimately developed them into a compassionate and sharp-witted Buddhist whose courage and True Faith led them to vanquish the Camarilla ancilla and her vampiric influence. This game is well-structured in a twelve-chapter narrative, fleshed out with a diverse cast of characters as well as various scenes which pay homage to numerous pre-existing horror media, from classic vampire novels to 1980s horror cinema: Bram Stoker, Stephen King, John Carpenter, Stanley Kubrick, you-name-it! This is what makes Out for Blood a charming supernatural rollercoaster to remember. If I had one thing to complain about this game, it's that I wish this game probably incorporated Hunter Edges and Perks. Then again, this game was published before Hunter: The Reckoning had its long-awaited 5th edition released. Therefore, if this game were to receive a sequel or a re-release, I would love to see additions from Hunter's 5th edition made.
Almost great! Too short, and beyond the skills of the author. Also, as many have pointed out....not a VTM game, but Hunter (which is actually cooler in many regards) game literally is at the ending where a mid-way point feels correct. I had hoped the interactive novels were the first step of a mass relaunching up to bloodlines 2. Starting with night road (saints guard Kyle Marquis) moving towards bloodhunt (not my thing but I'm about bringing the youngins in doubly so when things are free) and moving on. I remember this coming out and second and knowing the relaunch was doomed. Mark my words after the B.S with bloodlines 2 it'll be another fifteen years until we get another go at this. I wonder if Henry Cavill would ever pivot off off warhammer to help relaunch the VTM TV show....
Vampire Masquerade titles to play: Coteries of New York, Night Road, Parliament of Knives, Shadows of New York etc etc are all great but this one strays off and you don't actually get to play a vampire but some vanilla noob that stumbles into vampire naughtiness. The group that helps you makes it feel like you're not so much a vampire hunter (which would be cool) but this makes you feel like you're from the Scooby Doo gang or team Buffy. Not White Wolfs best concept.
A little slow paced at first but a good game
