Of my 30 min of playtime, maybe 12 was unskipable cutscene or interaction, 12 was walking simulator and maybe 6 max was actual platforming and "puzzle solving". Not to mention the horrible performance that you will see in most other review too which is why i wanted to focus on something not mentionned. If you want this as a puzzle platformer experience, this is probably not for you, if you want this as art and its story then sure maybe.
Here is my review for SCARF: This is a platformer game where your character doesn't handle very well. You will commonly miss jumps or fall of the edge of platforms. Scarf also has the old problem of your character having a turning radius. So if you're on a small floating platform and need to make a jump to the right, your character will not immediately turn right; instead, they will arc over there and usually fall off the platform. This builds up the frustration quite quickly. At least the game only has three levels. Each level consists of large square areas linked with linear hallways. These are all the same just with a different coat of paint. You must solve puzzles to progress and each puzzle has the difficulty of hungry hungry hippos. You run to a corner of the box and see four icons on a wall with the exact shapes directly underneath it. The puzzle is "match the wall" with the only difficulty being the camera not allowing you to actually look at the wall. So you must run away to regain control of the camera, look at the wall, and run back to the sliding puzzles. Or my favorite puzzle "Can you find the glowing orbs?". Story wise, it's dumb. You awaken in a void with a voice saying "my mother was ripped apart and her power stolen, reclaim her power". And you say "ok". So you enter portals and find the other humanoid shades and suck out the magic juice. You return the magic juice to the mother and she says "Thanks for the power. Now die". And you die. The end. Apparently there is a "good" ending where you find all the hidden collectables and you instead kill her. You then give the magic power back to all the humanoids and live... ever after. Rather generic I'd say. But the most egregious part is how Scarf breaks a cardinal rule of collecting platformers... it doesn't let you re-enter levels. If you try to re-enter a level you are forced to restart from the beginning. You lose all your progress and powerups. The game only allows you to collect every single thing in a single run. Horrendous design and killed my interest in trying to 100% it. But what Scarf makes me think about is how it advertises itself as an "atmospheric and emotional journey". I consider this incredibly false. Games build atmosphere through indirect storytelling. You build a rapport with the world and the character themselves through the worldbuilding, the visual storytelling, and the music. However, none of this really rings true to me for Scarf. Sure there's some scribbles on a wall. Sure there's some melancholy music. But it doesn't build to anything. There's no greater connection to the protagonist nor the world they live in in any atmospheric way. Overall, totally fine and it checks the boxes for a platformer. It really does give off the impression of "dev's first game", which makes sense because it is their first game. Just totally generic and no need to play it. I wouldn't even suggest this as a first platformer to a new gamer.
Genre
The game gave me a really bad headache — both from the gameplay and how unoptimized it is. Cutscenes can’t be skipped, and the puzzles are repeated over and over, which gets frustrating. The story is decent, but not great. Overall, I don’t recommend buying it in its current state.
-very basic and slow movement -platforming and puzzles quite boring -story isn't really engaging since most of it is told in optional cutscenes and some aren't skippable -you are often forced to walk or to pet the scarf -poor performance +nice artstyle And to top everything off, I encountered a softlock in the desert area, due to a bug I could't feed my scarf with the orb, so I restarted the game and now I get a crash every time I try to load (of course there are no manual saves or older autosaves). So yeah, no recommendation at all...
KKKKKKKK
Short story time... Missed one collectible in an hour long level. Re-entered level to grab collectible. Can't get back to hub world without beating hour long level again. Uninstalled game.
Another wonderful adventure. Thank you!
